Similarities And Differences Between The Odyssey And The Penelopiad

A character trait defines someone’s personality, however not all of the character traits are the same for one person because different people have different opinion or view of them. In both Homer’s epic The Odyssey and Margaret Atwood’s novel The Penelopiad, Penelope is given similar characteristic of loyal and faithful to Odysseus l, but there is one major difference between both text which involves her knowledge. In the Atwood, the characteristic of wise and knowledgeable were shown as she took control of the kingdom while odysseus was a ways however, innocent and naive were shown through the way her son and the suitor treat her in Homer’s epic.

She manage the slaves and organize the animals, preventing the kingdom from falling apart or losts it power. At night she would cry and long for her husband to come home ( Atwood 85-89).This show the loyalty because she waited and devoted for him for many years and took care of his possession to made him to be proud of her. She still keep hope of him returning home and does not want him to be disappointed when he returned and see his kingdom. She put his priority as if it were her and took care of it to show her devotion and loyalty toward him.

Although penelope show loyalty and faithfulness in both text, there difference in the level of her knowledge. In the odysseus, penelope was viewed as innocent and naive.after penelope handed the odysseus's arrow to emmaus for the suitor to try and win the challenge, Telemachus comment about her mother has no respect for her as if she was unimportant and naive. When odysseus return home, the crafty man doesn't woke penelope up because he knew she would “never let {Telemachus } take charge of the maids” for their disloyalty toward the odyssey ( Homer 377).
Not only the suitor treat her as an object but her son as well. He feels she does not know what she doing or lack of knowledge about how to run the kingdom. Odysseus still treat her as a innocent child and know she could not harm the maids. despite homer’s view of her innocent, her wise and
