Similarities Between Animal Farm And Russian Revolution

The book Animal Farm was written by George Orwell. Though we do not know the exact setting in the book itself it is evident that it is directly related to the Russian Revolution that was going on when Orwell was writing the book.

1.Orwell's Animal farm is an allegory to the Russian revolution but it uses animals to demonstrate the events, for example in chapter six it says “ All that year the animals worked like slaves. But they were happy in their work; they grudged no effort or sacrifice, well aware that everything that they did was for the benefit of themselves and those of their kind who would come after them, and not for a pack of idle, thieving human beings”. This is showing how the farm owners would treat these animals like slaves which eventually caused the big rebellion. And all of this symbolizes the big picture, the Russian Revolution took place in 1917 when the peasants and working class people of Russia revolted against the government of Tsar Nicholas II.

Mr. Jones Meets Czar Nicholas 2nd and the Russian Communist Revolution In the novel, Animal Farm, George Orwell connected both traits of Czar Nicholas 2nd to Mr. Jones in a very realistic and modern way. This makes it easier for the reader to understand the events that happened during the Russian Communist Revolution. The book tells events of the revolution through the point of view of farm animals. The author explains Czar Nicholas’s part in the war by connecting him to Mr. Jones.

According to the book How to Read Literature like a Professor, “nearly all writing is political on some level.” (Foster 111). In the book Animal Farm, George Orwell conveys a clear message to his readers, stating that greed and hypocrisy can turn an entire society upside-down. Through his use of allegories and symbolism, Orwell exposes the true nature of Stalinist Russia; where the population was manipulated by various means, including propaganda, violence, and false promises. When examined closely, the many characters, events, and ideas of Animal Farm have some sort of connection to Soviet Russia and Communism in general.

Communism taking over Russia was the result of poor planning and political turmoil the tsar caused. The low wages and long hours of supporting a losing war that no one wanted caused unrest among the peasants. In 1917, the tsar fell, with the Provisional Government and Petrograd Soviet filling the government’s role. The Soviets, or Communists, slowly sapped power away from the Provisional Government, and took control of Russia. August 1945, Animal Farm was published.

The book called Animal Farm demonstrates that the story is an allegory for the Russian Revolution. The story explains about power and how is the society being ruled. At first, it has been nice, until there is power and nobody is actually equal to each other. Mostly, the animals or people do not accept anything like that, but the society has changed and it will never be the same. Therefore, the book, Animal Farm, and history, Russian Revolution, have similar connections of what do the animals and people have a role to play.

George Orwell wrote Animal Farm intending to pick at the people involved in the Russian Revolution. Manor Farm is similar to Russia, Old Major, Snowball, and Napoleon relate to the people in power during the Russian Revolution. Mr. Jones is made out to be Czar Nicholas II. Old Major is made out to be Lenin, Lenin is the leader of the Bolshevik Party that took over in the Russian Revolution in 1917. Animal Farm can be paralleled to the Russian Revolution through the use of characters and many events in the story.

In the Russian Revolution they held a rebellion held by a network of soviets, led by socialists. In the book the rebellion is held by the animals. The pigs are symbolizing the socialists because they are more in charge than any other animal. There was troubles with not having enough money to keep the government going, but in the book they use the farm as an example of the government. In 1916 they started with revolutionary propaganda, in the book one of the animals refers to propaganda by telling the animals that if they don’t listen then Mr. Jones would come back, but in reality he wasn’t going to.

Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution have many similarities and ideas. The characters, settings, and the plots are the same. In addition Animal Farm is a satire and allegory of the Russian Revolution, George Orwell meant for it to be that way. My essay will cover the comparison between Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution. Also it will explain why this novel is a satire and allegory to the Revolution.

The story of Animal Farm is just not the one of animals living on an ordinary farm. Rather, the tale of Napoleon coming to rule while causing violence and leading the animals. George Orwell, symbolizes Napoleon as Stalin. He was admired by his followers, but Stalin committed cruel actions against his people similar, to Napoleon the pig from Animal Farm. As Animal Farm encounters the leadership of Napoleon he murders animals who disagree with him or innocent animals who he feels that they aren’t useful similar to Stalin who would murder his own people because he felt that they weren’t necessary.

The classic, Animal Farm is a sarcastic novel about the Russian Revolution where important roles are played by animals. The animals in this novel were neglected by their owner and his men; they were not treated right and were not taken care of properly. This led the animals to rebel and throw out all the humans on the farm so that they can have the property to themselves. Napoleon, the new leader of the farm, only cared about controlling the whole farm which led him to forget the terrible past. “Napoleon himself, magically upright, casting haughty glances from side to side… carried a whip in his trotter” (Orwell 133).
