The famous author and abolitionist Frederick Douglass and his mistress have many similarities and differences between them, when it comes to their positions in society at the time. Frederick Douglass was an African American abolitionist who taught himself to learn and read English, worked with Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, helped many Africans escape into the North, and was even nominated as Vice President of the United States. Frederick Douglass would have never been the man we now know him as if it was not for his mistress. Before Douglass was a free man, he was a slave who worked for a man named Master Hugh. One major difference Douglass and his mistress had at the time was their representation. When the Constitution was formed, Southerners argued and eventually established a compromise with Northerners which allowed a state to count Africans as ⅗ of a man, in order to determine political representation. Women, on the other hand, were still considered as a whole human being. Furthermore, women still had dominance over Africans, at the time. Africans who worked in the homes of their white owners were normally commanded by white women to do the household chores and take care of their children. Douglass was fortunate enough to be working in Master Hugh’s home at the time and under his mistress's care, because he would have never been given the opportunity to learn the alphabet. In conclusion, Frederick Douglass and his mistress have several similarities and differences, when it comes to their inferior positions in society at the time. They both were inferior to Master Hugh who basically controlled them as if they were his sheep. Due to society’s way of thinking during those times, women and Africans were inferior to white men, no matter what actions they took or how privileged they were.
