Madeline Jeffrey Mr. ENG 2D0 Tuesday, November 21, 2017 Innocent VS Evil In Act 2 Scene 2 of the play, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have differing reactions to the sight of King Duncan’s blood. First, during a conversation immediately following the murder, Macbeth is losing his composure while Lady Macbeth ridicules him. Next, Shakespeare provides a visual imagery displaying how Macbeth and Lady Macbeth react to the blood smeared on their hands. The blood represents guilt. Finally, while trying to rid themselves of the blood on their hands, Macbeth fears that it may never be removed while Lady Macbeth simply washes her hands. Macbeth is being over dramatic when he states, “My hands, they pluck out my eyes” (2.2.59). Macbeth is overreacting to his guilt because he doesn't want to live with it for the rest of his life. This is similar to Oedipus, as he plucked out his eyes after realizing that he killed his father and had an affair with his mother. With his eyes, Macbeth is forced to look back on the murder every day, which Macbeth's who has a hot as white as milk cannot bare. In contrast, Lady Macbeth acknowledges that she is guilty of murdering the King, but does not feel any regret. She communicates this to Macbeth by saying, “My hands are of your colour, but I shame to wear a hot so white” (2.2.82). Lady Macbeth criticizes her husband for feeling contrite after taking an innocent life. Any reasonable person would feel a sense of compunction after murdering. Consequently, Lady Macbeth is different, in a bad way. Macbeth may have a heart that is as white as milk, but that is better than Lady Macbeth whose has a heart red, like the fires of hell. Finally, when one has guilt there is no way of ignoring it, it must be dealt with. Macbeth believes that he will never be able to get rid himself of his guilt, but Lady Macbeth has no problem with the blood of King Duncan on her hands.
