Similarities Between Nazi Germany And The Holocaust

The words inscribed above the Auschwitz concentration camp read; "Arbeit Macht Frei,” meaning, “work brings freedom.” These deceiving words gave unsuspecting prisoners hope that they could get out of the most destructive concentration camp during the entire Holocaust. This concentration camp would kill over one million people. Auschwitz will be fully analyzed, starting with the early stages of Auschwitz, then the Jews and the horrors of Auschwitz, and finally the final days of Auschwitz. The events that took place at Auschwitz concentration camp were horrifying and led to the death of millions.

The medical experiments of the Holocaust were horrific acts with possible advancements in medicine, that go unnoticed due to current hospitals using ill-effective techniques, the EPA letting phosgene toxins infect workers, and some newspapers and agencies disregarding the use of the advancements. It is widely known, that the Holocaust was a horrible event during World War II, where Nazis would massacre Jews in a variety of ways, ranging from a firing squad to being buried alive. Horrible atrocities that ended in five million, to as many as six million Jewish deaths, among many more prisoners the Germans convicted. However, what is less known is how many of these deaths were used in medical experiments to advance medicine and medical practices.

Auschwitz is the largest mass murder site in human history (Arnett) When you arrive at Auschwitz, a carved out message appears above the gate, “Arbeit macht frei”, which translates to “Work Will Make You Free” (“History”). Hours after Hana entered the gates, her and a group of girls were ordered to proceed into a condensed building and take a shower (Levine 82). That “shower” quickly turned into Hana’s worst nightmare. On October 23, 1944, Hana Brady was killed (Levine 82).

"The more we do to you, the less you seem to believe we are doing it." This is a quote by the Angel of Death himself, a man who brought medical advancements and discoveries to the Nazi society. Throughout the Holocaust there have been many experiments for the better of medicine and the disregard of its patients. These experiments had no regard to the patient's' well being and partly due to the hate of the victims but mainly due to the medical breakthroughs that brought forth. The holocaust in retrospect was very beneficial to the medical and experimental society as a whole.

The diabolical experiments executed during the holocaust were some of the most inhumane occurrences in history; nevertheless, these atrocities were conducted without consent of the patient they were performed on. The nefarious experiments of the holocaust often resulted in the demise of the unlucky host of the experiments, and if the patent was lucky enough to survive the longevity of their luck would come to an end, as all who survived these experiments were murdered shortly afterward to keep secret of the hideous crimes.

At extermination camps, the Nazis conducted many medical experiments on the prisoners that resulted in many deaths. Between 1939 and 1945 medical research projects involving cruel and often lethal experimentation on human subjects were performed. These projects were supported, well-known organizations in the Third Reich and were categorized into three fields: research intended at cultivating the endurance and rescue of German troops, testing of medical techniques and medications, and experiments that pursued to approve Nazi cultural belief. More than seven thousand victims of these cruel medical experiments have been acknowledged. Targets of the experiments included Jews, Poles, Gypsies, Soviet prisoners of war, homosexuals, and Catholic priests (Medical Experiments ).

On the 21st of April in 1941, the Nazis opened a concentration camp, Natzweiler. Natzweiler was a concentration camp in the Vosges Mountains of Alsace, southwest of Strasbourg, France. It was the central camp and the only concentration camp in France. Nearly 22,000 deportees died there. (Struthof) The camp also served as both a labor camp supporting the Nazi war industry, and as a research spot for Nazi professors from the Reich University of Strasbourg to do medical experiments. Although Natzweiler is not a well-known camp, it is one of the biggest contributors to the terrible hell known as the Holocaust. During World War II, Hitler created many different death camps and transit camps. One transit camp in particular is Theresienstadt. It is located near Prague, Czechoslovakia and its alternate name is Terezin. Theresienstadt was a transit camp that was supposed to be a “model” camp to do away with the accusations of murder of the Jewish people. Theresienstadt had a movie made about it even though its conditions were terrible, it had its own form of “government”, and it was a camp where children left their art and poems before their death.

The Holocaust is arguably one of the biggest genocide in world history when between five and six million Jews were killed. Most were killed by gas or by firing squad or by simply being burned. But some of the Jews were victims of the doctors during the Holocaust. One of the most famous doctors during this time was Dr. Mengele, he was responsible for most of the deaths caused by experiments during the time. His career began at the Institute for Hereditary Biology and Racial Hygiene in Frankfurt, where he became the assistant of Dr. Otmar von Verschuer, a leading scientific figure widely known for his research with twins. The Nazi experiment camps involved painful and deadly experiments on thousands of prisoners. Prisoners at these camps would be subject to poison, diseases, bone grafting, high pressure systems, and often sterilization. The Nazis conducted these tests to see what the human body could withstand. They also tried to find cures to multiple diseases. Furthermore, in Dachau, “Prisoners tested the feasibility of reviving individuals immersed in freezing water. For hours, prisoners were forcibly submerged in tanks filled with ice water.”(History.comstaff). The prisoners that were tested, if they survived, would often be killed. This goes for all of the experiments. Despite the rigorous experimentation, the Nazis did not accomplish or have any major discoveries that benefited humanity.

The prisoners held in the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp went through an abundance of physical challenges, pain and suffering that no human being should ever have to endure. What happened during the three years and four months that the camp was running has brought countries together to realize just how unjust the entire Holocaust was to minorities. SS officers would greet the Jews and Polish political prisoners, which included elderly and children, by numbering them and sorting them for the torture they were yet to go through. In Germany many collaborators aided in the implementation of the Holocaust from the civil government agencies and business communities. “Local cooperation and leadership were essential to the success ‘coordination.’ so was a bombardment of propaganda from party-controlled newspaper and publicity enthusiastic” (Bergen 82) shows the local community was excited about a new dynamic movement and an explanation to the defeat in the world war. Newspaper, magazines, and films agencies picked up on the propaganda. Adolf Hitler also had close ties with large companies who looked out and helped implement the holocaust like  I.G. Farben, Bayer, IBM, Daimler-Benz, Krupp, and Volkswagen. The Nazis campaign received a large fund from I.G. Farben and even helped popularize their propaganda in the early stages. Therefore Hitler compromised by sending Nazis prisoners to occupy the manufacturing plants of IG Farben. Volkswagen also were compromised with hundreds of Nazis prisoners to work in their manufacturing camps like the many others during the Nazis reign. Those prisoners weren't treated any differently as many of them died from being overworked, lack of essential nutrients, and even beaten. The German business communities were originally suspicious of the Nazis, but over time became comfortable with aiding the Nazis which contributed to carrying out the genocide in Germany.
