In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses the symbols of good and evil through the Lord of the Flies and Simon. In order to convey the underlying message, that the fear of the unknown brings out the evil in humans. William Golding's fictional piece, evil is symbolized through the lord of the flies because he represents the loss of civilization and innocence. This quote shows that the character Lord of the Flies gets into the boy's thoughts, “There isn’t anyone to help you, only me. and I’m the beast fancy to think you can hunt and kill. You knew, didn’t you? I'm part of you. Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why these things are the way they are?” (Golding chapter 8). Proof of this is in the bible in verses of Genesis 2:4- 3:24, the quote from this verse is, “resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Another reason why the Lord of the Flies represents evil, is because the boys are what is becoming evil. It states in Golding's book, “Maybe there is a beast. Maybe it's us”. This quotes states, that the Lord of the flies is being called a beast but in reality it’s the boys minds becoming the beasts. There loss of civilization and innocence is why they are becoming savages and blaming the ‘beast’ for it. The thesis connects towards this because the boy’s inner evil is coming out, because they fear dying and the unknown that’s yet to come.
