Simone Veil is a leader in Europe that few outside of France have heard of. After graduating high school, she and her family were deported from France for being Jewish. After a stay in Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, she and her sister were liberated by the Allies. She believed the only reason she survived was because of the generosity and selflessness of the women in the camps. Because of this, she decided to give back by making life better of women in Europe. She fought to make life better for women in the same country that had abandoned her, and this leaves me in awe. She became one of the first female magistrates in France, and improved prison conditions for women. Next, as the Director of Civic Affairs, she improved French women's
Have you ever heard of the Olympic gymnast, Simone Biles? She has been a gymnast since she was eight years old. She is a gymnast that went to the 2016 Rio Olympics. I hope in the paper you learn about her.
"Women, like men, should try to do the impossible, and when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.” Amelia Earhart. Women have made remarkable impacts on history. Throughout most of history, women have had fewer legal rights and career opportunities than men. Their ideal job was to be mothers or housewives. However, there were numerous amounts of women who have stood up for themselves and made a change. When in the face of discrimination, they held their heads high and persevered, showing the world that males are not always authoritative. Joan of Arc was one of these heroic females who made a major impact throughout history.
Throughout history, people have made sacrifices, changes, and big decisions that later sometimes result in something grand. These grand occurrences can either be good or bad. Usually as time goes on these events and most well-known people of this time are highlighted in history classes for students to learn and to honor those of that time. However, some of the smaller people that contributed to historical events aren’t as highlighted as those that were seen as the big leaders. For example, in the American Revolution, the people that usually come to mind are George Washington, Paul Revere, and Thomas Jefferson. What about the people who were injured, scared and killed because of this bloody war? They seem to be forgotten until they are highlighted once again. Another example of a person that was not really highlighted for their actions is Nina Simone. She made an impact on the Civil Right Movement that not many other artist or celebrity would have done. When you think of the Civil Rights Movement the first three that come to mind of course are, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and Rosa Parks. So, when someone hears the name Nina Simone the two most common responses might be “Who’s that?” or “Oh the singer?”. But what is forgotten is how she, at such a high level, put her reputation at a risk. Nina Simone was a very well-known singer of the 1950s and 1960s especially for her song “Feeling Good”. She didn’t just use her popularity for fame and money but to express
During a time when women weren't known to have power, one woman stood out to me because she made such a huge impact on society. Dorothea Dix was an author, advocate, and reformer and she was known for her efforts to change how the mentally ill and prisoners were treated. She helped create institutions across the United States and Europe that would help change how people analyzed the mentally ill and prisoners. The reason for the creation of the institutes, was because she did research study, and found evidence that showed prisoners were neglected. That was not the only things Dorothea Dix had a desire to change. She also didn’t agree with the saying "people with mental disabilities cannot be cured or healed," but in fact her as individual proved that wrong. Growing up Dorothea had health issues that affected her working career and from her experience she formed a desire to help make a difference in others' lives. I view Dorothea Dix as a role model simply because I can relate to her when it comes to her view on the mentally ill. My brother underwent brain surgery which left him as being known as a person with mental disabilities. In today's society people are treated much different and less likely to be judged all thanks to Dorothea Dix. It amazes me how Dorothea Dix back in the 1860's still has an effect on today's society and how we view and treat the mentally ill. She not only brought awareness to the mentally ill and prisoner's but she also served in the Civil War as

Although there have been several influential people in the world, the person that stood out to me most is Susan B. Anthony. Born in 1820, she was raised in a politically active family and was inspired to fight for women's rights while taking part in the Temperance Movement. Her work helped shape the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote. Susan b. Anthony’s strong belief in women's rights and how she takes initiative into turning her beliefs into a reality is extremely courageous and should be recognised by more people.
Just a short eight days ago, Jeannette Rankin paved a new path for women as she became the first Congresswoman. On November 7, she won the position of U.S. Representative for the state of Montana. She has already made major impacts in other states such as Washington and California, and she hopes to continue her dreams as a Representative.
Like her I find great joy in helping other in need. After reading how she fought to provide help for the mistreated laborers I was moved by her humanitarianism.
Have you ever put much thought into how an uneducated woman with a disability in reading and writing, could still find a way to work and fight for not only her rights but others too? Isabella Baumfree was a phenomenal woman . She took a stand for women’s rights, blacks rights, and anti-slavery. She was a well-known abolitionist and orator.Isabella Baumfree, was born in 1797, to parents who were enslaved; she was one of twelve children. She had a rough childhood. She was sold at the age of eleven, along with a flock of sheep for the price of one hundred dollars. She experienced countless beatings and sexual abuse from her master (slave owner). Later, she married a man named Thomas and had children of her own. Her children were eventually sold to different plantations. She was only left with her infant daughter . Isabella Baumfree was a runaway slave. As the result of her children being sold, she was only able to escape to freedom with her infant daughter. After she obtained her freedom ,she went to court and challenged the validity of her son being sold into slavery. She was successful against so many odds in the court case. She won. Isabella Baumfree continued down her religious
Margaret Sanger, a militant determined to push her cause and see her dreams fulfilled. I admire her for her will and determination to pass what she believed was right; fighting the people keeping her down. She believed in birth control and the idea women control their own bodies. Her target groups might have been considered "racist", but she pushed to help women. I believe in birth control and cutting out unwanted pregnancies.
There are three women who definitely accomplished much in their lives, and had a huge impact on their societies. They are Joan of Arc, Helen Keller and Malala Yousafzai. Joan of Arc was a young French girl from the 1400’s who claimed to have a vision from God which led her to lead the French to victory in a war with the English. Helen Keller became deaf and blind when she was very young, and with the help of a gifted teacher went on to a very accomplished life. During our present day, in Pakistan a teenaged girl named Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban because she was an advocate of education for girls; she miraculously recovered from her injuries and went on to become a world renowned advocate for education and human rights.
Leisure at the turn of the twentieth century was a new found type of freedom and entertainment, not only for the children, but for the entire family. It was a way for numerous families to spend quality time together but in a more modern and convenient way. Entertainment before the twentieth century consisted of household entertainment, such as board games, and “backyard games” like tennis, and football amongst others. When compared to leisure in the twentieth century, many of these activities were seen as “outdated”, as more and more people started to adopt the new ways of entertainment. Some examples were the openings of catalogs, sports, cinemas, amusement parks.

There are many people in this world that we consider great humanitarians. Mother Teresa was a unique individual that stood out of the crowd because of her involvement in helping the sick, poor and dying. She spent everyday of her adulthood caring for people that were in need by setting up the Missionary of Charity along with many homes for the people she cared for. Mother Teresa won many awards throughout her lifetime for her dedication to care for people in need. It is no wonder that Mother Teresa won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and is considered a saint.
