What if there was a pilot who was afraid of heights? This is an example of situational irony. Situational irony makes an ordinary story extraordinary in unexpected ways as it can also be alarming or amusing. Authors use situational irony to provoke feelings in their readers, such as humor and pity. O. Henry uses situational irony to show humor in his story, “The Ransom Red Chief.” Guy de Maupassant also uses situational irony in his story the necklace where the reader feels pity towards the characters. By examining these two short stories, it is clear that authors utilize situational irony to affect readers’ emotions.
“The Ransom Red Chief,” by O. Henry uses situational irony to create the effect of humor in this short story. For instance,

After losing what she thought was an expensive necklace, her and her husband had to replace it. The paid forty five thousand francs for an identical new one. They accumulated debt and sacrificed as much as they could. Guy de Maupassant wrote, “Madame Loisel came to know the life of abject poverty” (7). This an an example of situational irony because she feels that she deserves more than what she has but in the end she has less. The reader feels sorry for her because despite her greed she still lived in abject poverty for ten years. Another example of how the author uses situational irony to make the reader feel sympathetic toward a character is when it turns out that the necklace was fake. This is ironic because Mathilde and her husband paid forty five thousand francs to replace the necklace when they only need to pay about five thousand. Mathilde finds this out at the end of the story when Mathilde confronts Madame Forestier and Madame Forestier replies, “Oh my poor Mathilde! But mine was an imitation it was worth at the very most five hundred francs.” (8) The author produces pity in the reader because mathilde suffered in poverty when she didn't have too. Guy de Maupassant clearly uses situational irony to make the reader feel pity
The first example of situational irony would be Fortunato’s name, which means fortunate in Italian, an ironic name for someone who is about to be left in the catacombs to die. Another example of irony is when Montresor says, “It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation” (Poe, 3). Obviously this is dramatic irony as Fortunato has no idea that Montresor is smiling because he will kill him rather than actually being happy to meet him. Also verbal irony is present when Montresor says,
In the story "ransom of Red Chief" the irony creates humor in the story. For example, the author states "What's $250 after all?" referring to them paying too get rid of Red Chief. I find this ironic and funny, because it is quite strange to see kidnappers paying to get rid of someone they kidnapped.
In the “Story of an Hour” we observe many instances in which irony takes place.
In the novel ‘’Night’’ Eliezer survives from Auschwitz and surprisingly almost dies from food poisoning. The irony in this is that he could of died many ways at Auschwitz but ultimately almost dies from food poisoning. That is also a form of situational irony meaning that the situation turns opposite of what you expect.Another example of situational irony in’’Night’’ is when Chlomo Wiesel makes a remark about the yellow Jewish star, mocking it by asking if its lethal, but wearing the yellow star is what kills him in the story. In this essay I’ll be giving you more three more examples of irony throughout the novel ‘’Night’’.
Irony is a useful device for giving stories many unexpected twists and turns. In Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," irony is used as an effective literary device. Situational irony is used to show the reader that what is expected to happen sometimes doesn't. Dramatic irony is used to clue the reader in on something that is happening that the characters in the story do not know about. Irony is used throughout Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through the use of situational irony and the use of dramatic irony.
Irony is described by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “the incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result”. “Ransom of the Red Chief”, as short story written by O. Henry, is full of all types of irony. In this short story a boy, Johnny Dorset, is taken by two kidnappers, Sam and Bill. Ironically, by the end of the story it is the kidnappers who pay ransom to the father. In “Ransom of the Red Chief”, there are many examples of irony which help to enhance the story. Throughout this tale, there are multiple examples of situational, dramatic, and verbal irony.
Its seems to me that "The Necklace" is a better example of situational irony because, in "The Necklace" the author gives the main lead character an actual punishment where the characters has to spend the rest of her life paying for her greedy mistake. In "Lamb To The Slaughter" the main character did not receive any type of punishment, at the end of the day she got away with the murder of her husband. In "The Necklace" when she was invited to the party with her husband she said "Oh nothing. Only i don't have an evening dress therefore I can't go to the affair." Even before the the actual party started Mathilde was already complaining about how she did not have the necessary clothe to wear for the party.

In the two short stories, both the authors use situational irony to convey the exact opposite
"Humor brings insight and tolerance. Irony brings a deeper and less friendly understanding." (Repplier) Irony, more specifically situational irony, is in any given circumstance when actions are taken that are contrary to original beliefs. When placed in a story the irony involves the characters' actions and the final outcome or ending of the novel. In the short story, "Good Country People", O'Connor deliberately uses irony with characters actions and thoughts, or vice versa, to lead the reader to the wrong assumption.
In Tim O’Brien’s story, Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?, a theme that people tend to utilize different coping mechanisms to ease their fear is shown via some examples of irony. After being at war for not even a week, Private First Class Paul Berlin watches his cohort die of not the foot that was blown clean off his leg, but the heart attack he suffered from the fear of dying from the loss of this foot. Berlin has to find a way to put this all behind him and cope with his own fear of dying. He hopes that, “In the morning, when they reached the sea, it would be better” (O’Brien 198). This is situational irony because the reader expects Private First Class Paul Berlin to cope with his fear of the war when they reached the sea.
Literary elements vary in different kinds of stories and some are more effective than others. The irony is a literary element that shocks a reader at the end of the story with an unexpected event. A story with the element “Irony” can go from good to bad or from bad to good, depending on the type of story. For stories that deal with life and death, irony can enhance that topic. Such as when the author gives us a situation we feel is death related and then later the author makes us change our mind about a life situation. This element can be shown in both “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and “The Interlopers” by Saki (H. H. Munro). However, Saki uses irony much more effectively in ‘The Interlopers”
One example from Ransom Of Red Chief is it states on page 1 “There was a town down there as flat as a pancake it was called summit of course”. This shows that Bill was using verbal irony. One example of situational irony irony from Ransom Of Red Chief is when Red Chief gets kidnapped and then he doesn’t wanna go home. This shows an example of situational irony. An example of situational irony from the movie is there's a police officer in the house and no one's paying attention to him. This shows an example of situational irony from the movie. An example of dramatic irony in the story is Bill thinks he got rid of the kid but he's standing right behind him. It states on page 71 “Bill Wobbled out into the little clearing. Behind him was the kid he came stepping softly like a scout with a broad grin on his face. This shows the dramatic irony in the story. Another example of dramatic irony from the movie is when kevin's family left him behind and went on vacation and they didn't know they left him behind. This shows the dramatic irony in the
There is plenty of irony in “The Necklace”. The situational irony in this story happens at the end of the story when Mathilde, who really does not like hard labor or anything lower class finds out that she has had to give up the greatest years of her life to save up and replace a necklace that she discovers is a fake. For a person who prided herself in that kind of taste and appearance on the upper class could not even tell the difference between the fake and valuable. The dramatic
People watch other individuals experience irony all the time. When something is ironic it means that the thing that was to happen, did not happen the way it was thought to happen. Sometimes irony happens to those who least expect it or irony happens to everyone. There have been songs, television ads, and stories written about irony or that have included ironic events or details. One piece of literature that contains a lot of irony is Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat”. Crane uses irony in many different ways in the story to tell of four individuals who survive their ship being wrecked and everyone else aboard has drown.
