Furthermore Slaughter thought she was going to stay at her job for as long as she had the opportunity to because it was what she loved to do, until she realized the desire she had to be with her family. “My desire to be with family and my conclusion that juggling high-level government work with the needs of two teenage boys was not possible.” (Slaughter 678). Slaughter mentions “I became aware that I didn’t only just need to go back home but that I truthfully wanted to go back home. I wanted to be able to enjoy and spend time with my kids the last couple years that they might be living here. (686) If you take the time out to prioritize what comes before what then I don’t necessarily think that you have to choose between: having a job that
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor, the protagonist, is a farmer in his middle thirties. The author gives little to no detailed physical description of him, but from Proctor’s speech, we can still picture him as a strong and powerful man who is able to keep every situation under the control, the kind of personality which earns him deep respect and even fear from the people in town. On the other hand, Abigail Williams, the antagonist, plays an inferior role as an orphan who has no social status in a place like Salem. Over the course of the play, John Proctor is absolutely awakened and transformed by Abigail Williams. In the end, he overcomes the crucible by releasing himself from his guilt of
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during colonial America. Throughout the story a group of girls makes accusations a mass of people of practicing witchcraft, one of the worst crimes to commit during that period, and people are being sentenced to hang for denying witchery. In the Crucible there are many lessons that Arthur Miller wants to teach you. To me a lot of the lessons that were taught in this story are important but I feel like one of them is the most important. Arthur Miller demonstrates that one of the lessons implied in the story is people’s character and how it affects those people and others. Examples of character are Giles Corey, John Proctor, Abigail Williams.
In Kurt Vonnegut’s magnum opus, Slaughterhouse-Five, easily over a dozen characters are introduced in the story, each of varying importance, but only a select few are actually explored in even a small amount of development. The top two characters in this category would be Billy Pilgrim, the protagonist and often anti-hero of the story, and Paul Lazzaro, who can easily be considered the novel’s antagonist. Lazzaro, specifically, is much more interesting to extrapolate upon, given the reader is given constant and in-depth information about Pilgrim throughout the story, whereas Lazzaro’s character requires more careful thought and consideration.
The Huaorani people face many challenges throughout their endeavors in protecting the rainforest in Ecuador for themselves, or at least from those that want to terrorize their indigenous territories. The Huaorani people fight back to try and restore their land, and by doing so they have to fight by using environmental organizations to have them help succeed in their journey. Organizations, such as ONHAE, CONFENIAE, Via AUCA, and many others will help the Huaorani indigenous peoples fight back in order to save their rainforest in Ecuador.
In her article, I see a lot of similarities as Slaughters. They both bring up the topic of a woman having a good supportive spouse in order for her to expand in her career. In the article, there is a quote from Laura Leigh Oyler, “Having a supportive spouse has been essential for her career says Oyler, the family's primary breadwinner. “He was the first one to say ‘you can do anything. I've got your back. Go for it,’” she says.” (Johnson 1) Another similarity I found between Anne Slaughter's article and Michelle Johnson's article is that they both share the same thoughts on the workforce not being flexible for women. “Nearly three-quarters of Americans say having more women in the workforce has been a change for the better in society and that marriages are more satisfying when men and women share responsibilities of work and children. But workplaces and laws have yet to catch up with the realities of family life, says Joan C. Williams,....The American workplace is “still perfectly designed for the workplace of the 1960s,” Williams says. ‘It assumes that you have someone else taking care of all your other family obligations, and that just isn't true anymore.’ ” (Johnson

In “An Act of Vengeance” by Allende irony is shown. Dulce swore to avenge her father death. “Don’t kill me, father,” she replied in a firm voice. “Let me live so that I can avenge us both.” by stating this she takes a different route and she falls in love with the man that killed her father and rapped her. instead of killing Tadeo the murder, she then kills her self for not killing her father killer. Rosa seemed she was caring out her own sadden character because she found herself loving the man she wanted to kill over the years. Rosa did not feel any hatred but instead she felt sadden. "she felt its opposite, a profound melancholy." Rosa change of heart toward her fathers killer was to unbearable because instead of her killing the murderer
Science has given humankind such wondrous gifts. It has launched man into space, allowed man to deny death’s touch through medical advancements, and permitted man to construct the world to their liking, but it has also armed man with instruments that sing for the death of other men. Although science has grown to be the pillar of how truth can only be achieved, it has been twisted into a truth by man that abandons humanity. Kurt Vonnegut realized that realized that science was no longer a lustrous object devoid of any impurities. He saw the misery that science’s truth can bring and turned to the the only thing that has been able to rival science since long ago: religion. If science seeks out the truth, religion is the antithesis that creates
Callum Hunt – Callum (often called “Cal”) is a 12 year old boy with a witty personality. He is sarcastic and often makes smart remarks towards those he dislikes, including teachers and other students. Despite this, he is loyal and protective over his friends and will do everything in his will to protect them from danger. Callum is stubborn and will often lash out on impulse, making this his strongest
In Homeland the character Marcus is a young boy who is in the middle of all this chaos, and decides to take action using his talent and knowledge. Marcus is like law, in the academy of law your attitude towards any assignment or case has to be the same. Even if the situation is rough you have to face it like when your client is not innocent and you have to fight for his innocent its hard but it’s not impossible.
The Crucible is a nonfiction book about a group of girls who try witchcraft and are caught by the minister of the town named Pariss, the girls start to act strange and say it’s someone doing witchcraft upon them. They start to blame innocent people and these innocent people are thrown to jail and later hanged if they don’t confess they were doing witchcraft. The book is all about courage, weakness and strength. In the book you see characters having courage and truthful because they stand up for what they believe in and they start to confess and tell the truth about other characters and themselves. On the other hand in the book you have a lot of characters who are weak and show weakness like Parris, Abigail, and Danforth let their reputation get in the way and they try to lie or get something over with so they don’t look bad and their reputation stays good.
Slaughterhouse-Five book is antiwar novel, and it was written by Kurt Vonnegut. The whole story is based on a person Billy Pilgrim, and he is not stuck in time. Billy time traveling and relives various occasions throughout his life. Billy Pilgrim is the main character in this book. The narrator tells us that “Billy was born in 1922 in Ilium, New York, the only child of a barber there. He graduated from Ilium High School in the upper third of his class, and attended night sessions at the Ilium School of Optometry for one semester before being drafted for military service in the Second World War” (Vonnegut 30). Then, after training he was sent to Germany during the war. Billy acknowledges diverse values and sees horrible and morbid occasions in a different contrast to others. Billy also experiences a lifestyle that is not visible to other people. Many readers would contend that Billy's encounters make him crazy; however, Billy's experiences with the Tralfamadorians (a group extra-terrestrial time travelers) enables him to keep his wisdom and remain an exceptionally clever, intelligent and happy man.
In George Orwell's tale Animal Farm, Orwell tells a story of what would happen if the animals on a farm would raise up against the farmers. After the revolution two pigs Snowball and Napoleon rise up to lead and defend the now free Farm; but as the farm continues to grow there could only be room for one leader. In the book, there are three characters Napoleon, who can seen as the brain and the supreme comrade of the farm. Squealer who can be seen as a body and Napoleons voice as he tells the animals what is right and wrong. Boxer is a tool for he is the hardest working animals on the farm but not the smartest. These three help conven one of the central themes of the book. The power of intelligence and that the smartest animals will rule, control, and manipulate the dumb animals.
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is one of the great American tragedies written in U.S.
In the Crucible, they’re a lot of characters who are concerned about their reputations. All they really have is their good name, so they do not want to ruin that. Many characters are afraid of telling the truth just because they don’t want to ruin their reputation. In that case some characters know some things but will not say anything to anyone. For example, John Proctor does not tell no one he has had an affair with Abigail. He doesn’t want to tell anyone because he can get arrested for having an affair. John actions are a lot different when Abigail is telling lies because he really wants to confess to the court about Abigail but he simply cannot make his decision. John cares about his name and doesn’t want his name to be known for having an affair.
