Roman slavery was a very big part of the Roman lives. Slavery was an important feature of the roman world. Prisoners of war and those who sold themselves to pay off debts usually became slaves. Slaves in Ancient Rome had few rights and couldn't chose what they wore or where they lived. Slaves were usually the people with less money. Many more wealthy people owned slaves. Not all slaves were treated badly at this time, but many were.

Many people sold themselves into slavery to pay off depths. If people needed money to pay things off, they would often sell themselves into slavery or get brought in. Some became slaves because they could not pay back the money they had borrowed. The government would take people into slavery if they could not pay their taxes. There were also many cases of poor people selling their children as slaves to richer neighbors.

Slaves could not choose what they wore or where they lived. The only money slaves had was the small allowance put into a fund from the owners. When there was enough money in the fund the slaves could buy their freedom back. Slavery has changed a lot since the roman times. Many changes have been made and laws against slavery. The romans lives depended on slavery, now we do not have many slaves.

Slaves were often mixed with free labor as employers used whatever human resources were available and needed to get a job done. A large percentage of the people living in Rome and Italy were slaves. Prisoners were taken to the slave-markets where they were paraded naked, with placards around their necks explaining their best and worst qualities.
