Slavery in america began in the 17th century in Virginia. Slaves were being transported to america through the triangular trade. The triangular trade was a process in which africans were captured and traded for rum and other goods from england to africa. Slaves were packed in an unsanitary and crowded ship, they were treated poorly. The 18th century was the busiest period for the slave trade. More than 6 million africans were enslaved and transported to the new world. Document C illustrates how slavery spread throughout the united states, document c also shows that slavery in the north had decreased, it was mostly due to the fact that they were industrializing and they didn’t need slaves. The south, however used slaves because they were agricultural. they produced a lot of cotton, and many other cash crops and needed slaves to work their farms.

Europeans, after the rise of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, vindicated the enslaving of Africans by depending on religious authority because they supposedly followed God’s will (notes). According to Pope Nicholas V, the African enslavement has helped the Catholic Church (source A). In a 1455 letter, he wrote, “... A large number of these have been converted to the Catholic faith…” (source A). The quote suggests the pontiff held a positive outlook on slavery, but he only supported it for the conversion of the slaves (notes). During the late 1700s & early 1800s, there was an agricultural revolution in the U.S. that really benefited the south. Due to this revolution, the south heavily relied on slave labor and the demand for it went up. The cotton gin was invented and it leads to cotton becoming king. Two types of workers risen because of the industrial and agricultural revolution which were wage workers and slaves. Slaves were mostly used in the South and wage workers were used mostly in the North.

Soon after Jefferson’s secret meeting, Quakers from both New York and Philadelphia set up petitions to the House of Representatives asking for what had already been declared unavailable; an end to the African slave trade. At the constitutional convention, Congress had stated that they couldn’t ban the slave trade until the year 1808 since the federal government couldn’t tamper with the slave trade until twenty years after the nation’s birth. James Madison rose as the voice of reason during this predicament. Madison’s main idea was that if the problem was treated routinely with minimum commotion, the problem would just fade away. Jackson had made evident that the challenge towards the constitution made it seem that the opposition to the slave trade had linked to the end of slavery.

When the New World began to evolve, the new European settlers were hungry for power and wealth. The Europeans were desperate to prove that they too had the ability to flourish as a nation. Though settlers throughout the American colonies struggled to survive due to famine and disease, they quickly found a solution that would generate immense amounts of income and quickly turn America into a world threat. After analyzing and interpreting the speakers purpose's in “Old Plantation Days”, Speech at hartford, Connecticut from Abraham Lincoln, and Sojourner Truth's “Ain't I a Woman” I concluded what the speakers purpose was for giving or publishing their literature and their personal bias on slavery. According to the text of Abraham Lincoln, he could go either way on slavery but this is because if he chooses to turn to on side or the other, half of the country would be mad and may rebel or opt out of the “More Perfect Union” (The Country) and I believe his bias is that he thinks slavery is wrong. I can safely say Sojourner Truth is against slavey for many reasons and she has an opinion on how woman deserve rights as well as men. The speaker in “Old Plantation Days” thinks that a slave owner is saving the slave because they take care of them and she claims black people who went into the real world and gained freedom suffered rather than the slaves who stay back home with their masters.

Slavery, as an institution, has existed since the dawn of civilization. However, by the fifteenth century, slavery in Northern Europe was almost nonexistent. Nevertheless, with the discovery of the New World, the English experienced a shortage of laborers to work the lands they claimed. The English tried to enslave the natives, but they resisted and were usually successful in escaping. Furthermore, with the decline of indentured servants, the Europeans looked elsewhere for laborers. On July 4th, 1854 while everyone celebrated American Independence the abolitionists took this moment to remind others that the government served slaveholders. This proven when the president of the United States sent a detachment of federal troops to boston to return a runaway slave to his owner. Since the beginning of William Lloyd Garrison’s fight slavery has only grown to four million but as foggy as the road to abolition seems he will not give up the war without a fight. With the victory of the Mexican American war came new territory, these territories were admitted to the union as either free or slave states. Things in the west are different from the east, and there is a great amount of conflict here in Kansas about slavery. Kansas just recently became a state it was a territory not too long ago, consequently there has been a whole dispute about it being a pro or anti slavery state. I can’t see what all the fuss is about, it’s dry here, nevertheless the weather is not predictable, it changes at random and is not good for crops that need to stay warm with plenty of sun. With all of this going on I am afraid that a war might break out soon over this place, a town was attacked by a group of pro slavers just a few days ago.

Slavery was ongoing in the southern states. In the 1800’s many white slave owners believed that the African Americans were inferior to them despite the fact that “”all men are created equal”. They were forced into labor and treated like property. The slave owners justified their behavior and believed they acted caring and conscientious to their slaves. Truthfully, however, the slaves were mostly treated very badly, as Fredrick Douglas, a black slave, testifies. There were select groups of white men who realized the abuses of slavery and worked to abolish it. Not many white people admired these abolitionists, but as time went by their support was increased.

I am planning on joining the army. I believe that slaves are fine and well off and should continue to be slaves. I personally have never had slaves because I could not afford them at the time, but in the future I hope to own some. There is bad news though, our country has just elected Abraham Lincoln who is a non believer in slavery, even though for many years we’ve had them, and no one has disagreed until now.

The history of slavery in America shows that African Americans were seen below humans. In fact they were not counted as a full human. Mickle’s article states that “because she was a slave, American law did not recognize her as a full person entitled to the law’s protection or of equal status to white people” (Mickle 80). Not being counted as a person could have influenced Wheatley in a negative way, but her love for God and her faith made these racist remarks and experiences different. Wheatley understood that slavery was evil, but she refused for the evil to win. She wanted everyone to be able to see that God has a plan for everything and everything happens for a reason.
