Slavery Through the Ages
Human beings have been in bondage for thousands of years. Slavery originated in early civilizations. It has not only affected our modern world, it has affected the advancement of the human being itself. In most civilizations, humans establish class systems and look upon other humans as if they are “lesser than” or “subhuman”. The process of dehumanization is a key psychological factor in why slavery has existed since the formation of civilizations.
Dehumanize: to treat someone as though he or she is not a human being (Merriam-Webster). This word and its definition can describe the treatment of multifarious groups of innocent people in this world 's past. Slavery is modeled after the domestication of animals (Digital History). During the Agricultural revolution, humans started to domesticate animals. This could have led the move to human domestication. Slavery was used in one of the earliest civilizations, Mesopotamia (Mark). In Hammurabi’s Code many of the laws had protocol that dealt with slaves and slave owners, showing that slavery was present in the civilization.
Slavery has affected many civilizations other than Mesopotamia. Slavery in the Middle East and Africa is broadly portrayed in the media today. The use and capture of Muslim/African slaves began in 1453 ( Digital History). Africa and the Middle East were very rich in natural resources and items that gained the attention of Europeans. The opportunity to gain more wealth shifted
Slavery has always been the most shocking phenomena of our world. Slavery, by itself seems very unnatural and provokes mixed feelings from the heart of each person. Some faced “slavery” even in the contemporary times. And some people just simply do not understand the possibility of one human being considering another human being its Slave. Slavery is the practice or system of owning Slaves. Nevertheless, there is still much to say about it and a lot of things to recall. Some of the big central ideas that I have found so far in my research are some of the ways Slaves were tortured, why was this portrayed, and what really led to this. Important insights that I have derived from my research topic include Slaves who helped other Slaves become free

Slavery can be dated back to very early civilizations and were crucial in everyday activities, also to the economy. Some of these ancient civilizations include the India, Mesopotamian and Chinese and these had slaves work in their homes or their shops. Another early civilization who used slaves were the Egyptian who used the slaves to build their monuments, castles, palaces and statues. Hebrews also used slaves but were a little more moral on how they were identified. Virgina has differences and similarities when it comes to slave narratives. To explain further, this is why the details and experiences that these ex-slaves gave in describing the institution of slavery and the practice of slavery are tremendously important because Virginia became a royal colony, the first in English history. However, the English kings were occupied with affairs at home, the Virginia house of burgesses was able to continue its functions and won formal recognition in the late 1630s. Thus, representative government under royal domain was assured. By 1641, when Sir William Berkeley became governor, the colony was well established and extended on both sides of the James up to its falls.
Slavery dates back to as early as the 1400s and continued on into the 20th century. People (Africans and Indigenous) were kidnapped by slave traders and sold off to people (European colonies) who bought the slaves as they needed them for help in labour. By doing so it influenced the cause for globalization, as people were sold off as products to be apart of plantation or agricultural labour. Creating cheap labour helping the colonies achieve high profits. Slavery was one of the starts of globalization.
Slavery is known to have existed as early as the 18th century B.C. during the Shang Dynasty of China. Slavery was widely practiced in many other countries, including, Korea, India, Greece, Mexico and Africa. (Britannica 288-89). When most people consider slavery, however, they think of Western slavery in North America because it is well documented and it was such a horrible institution. Even though there is no one definition of slavery, the people who study it (historians, anthropologists and sociologists) agree that certain characteristics are present in all forms of slavery. Slaves were property and objects, not subjects of the law. Slaves had few rights, always fewer than their owners. Slave

During creation, God made man and gave him the free will to do and act according to as he pleases as long as it is in agreement with His teachings. Fellow human beings could not have control over their fellow men because it was against God’s will. A state whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty, and fortune is known as slavery. The history of slavery dates back to creation times where the Israelites were taken as slaves by the Egyptians. In the U.S., slavery began in the early 17th century and existed for about 250 years. Most of the slaves were from Africa who worked in the production of tobacco and cotton. The African-American slaves played a major role in building the economic foundations of the new nation. The importation of African slaves to America officially ended in 1808. The American slavery reveals various themes, which have shaped the US history to its present state (Schneider & Carl).
Slavery has been around since the beginning of mankind. Slavery is believed to have been practiced since the start of civilization but most importantly the start of agriculture. Introducing agriculture was the beginning of farming, growing, planting crops, and rearing animals to provide food and wool. Slavery played a huge role in agriculture because the slaves were the main force behind all of the farming, construction of the pyramids, and maintenance of the crops around their civilization. Agriculture required a huge labor force and who better to utilize besides the lower classes and war captives to do the dirty work. Slaves were considered to be the lower class, the peasants, they did a lot of work for the king and or the wealthy in their
The idea and horrendous act of one human owning another is a plague etched in history from the colonization of the New World to its abolishment during the Civil War. The exemplification being referenced is slavery. Slavery placed man-kind in a position of power where the depravity of personal liberties and rights were not only apparent but generally accepted. There was an ideology that slaves were less than human; their species classified as property and could be treated as such. Slaves were bred as selectively as animals, tamed, disciplined, transported, and exploited in the same manner. There are two individual perspectives of slavery from varying timelines,

Whether it be the discovery of fire, electricity, democracy, etc., humans have mastered the art of advancing themselves toward modern civilization. However, the history of mankind is also burden with many acts of darkness. Centuries ago, the slavery system was created and this hateful act continues to haunt the world to this day. A common miss conception of slavery, is that it began with the Europeans kidnapping Africans and taking them to the New World for agricultural purposes. However, slavery stretches much farther than the early developments of the United Sates. For example, the word slavery is derived from the root word “Slav”, which originated from the the Slavic people who were subjugated by other Europeans in the early developments of mankind. With that said, many people are unaware of the Arab Muslim slave trade that occurred which resulted in the deaths of millions of more African lives than American slavery. (Azumah)

For them is marked the last time they were seeing there lands. Throughout history, slavery has played a very prominent role in shaping the world's societies and economies. Across three time periods in particular, slavery throughout the world has notable similarities and differences in areas such as the status of slavery, the way slavery influenced society, and the motivation for a civilization to practice slavery. These time periods are the Renaissance (1300-1650), the Industrial Revolution (1700-1900), and World Wars I and II (1914-1945).
