Social Class Is An Ongoing Problem

Social class is an ongoing problem in education, especially for those living on the lower end of the divide. More than one in five of Scotland’s children are living in poverty. In this essay I will consider why social class is an ongoing problem, its influence on wellbeing and achievement, and propose ways in which we can attempt to combat these issues. This will be accomplished with reference to concepts, theories and the scenarios detailed in appendix A, B and C.
According to Bourdieu 's highly influential theory of cultural reproduction, children from middle class families are more advantaged in gaining qualifications due to their possession of cultural capital (Lamont & Lareau, 2011). Cultural capital can be defined as a deeply ingrained knowledge of society’s high culture and taste, behaviours, linguistic cues and the education system. Cultural reproduction refers to the transmission of these aforementioned cultural values and norms between the generations. This can only be produced by family upbringing in the home (Bourdieu & Passeron, 1990). This transition enormously influences children’s success in school and later in life (Sullivan, 2001). However the distribution of cultural capital is severely inefficient (Bourdieu and Passeron, 1977). Sullivan (2001) applied Bourdieu’s theory and found that the working class lack the same cultural capital as the middle class.
