What is social deviance? Social deviance is acting against the norms of a society. There are a few things that can can be caused from the act of deviance. The social norm in our society here is to talk in the first person, not the third person. On Wednesday, my act of deviance was talking in the third person, a subtle approach to this assignment, but everyone knew I was being different. My goal in this essay is to inform on the different sociology ideas I thought of while I was being deviant. The five ideas I first thought of were: privilege of ignorance, social-self, agents of socialization, sanctions, and memory. First, I thought of privilege of ignorance. When I was talking in third person, people had the tendency to ignore what was happening. They would get a confused look on their face, then just ignore it, as if were not really happening. Everyone either gave me a funny look or laughed at me. They saw me differently because I was acting deviant. Some people even told me that I was weird. Once people caught on to how I was talking, they found it amusing to play along and ask me questions that I had to answer in “Alex is...” I could tell that people thought that I was acting weird, and to be quite honest, it did not feel all that good on the inside. Third, there was agents of socialization. Agents of socialization are the people around us, and how they socialize us. I started to look around, and it was mainly my peer group that was looking at me funny because I was acting different, but also they ended being the most accepting. They just talked to me and laughed at my answers. Another agent of socialization was school. When I went to Starbucks the barista asked me to repeat my order.
