To Kill a Mockingbird is set in Southern Alabama in the early 1930s during the Great Depression. This era has caused a great deal of hardship for most people, farmers in particular, and the minority. Racism was one of the biggest issues during the time. African Americans were oppressed and worked for low wages in the fields owned mostly by white land owners. Segregation with the “colored” and “whites” were in practice. Certain things in the film were influenced by this historical factor like the “colored balcony” in the courthouse where the black population has to sit in. The culture of different social class and race inequality were the major issues of the film making the main ideas relevant.
An important theme of the film is the moral values
thing during and following slavery. In the novel, a man named Bob Ewell despises black people and calls out Atticus by saying, “too proud to fight, you nigger lovin bastard?” (Lee, 291). What that quote is saying is how Bob is getting upset with atticus just because he is Tom Robinson's lawyer and Bob Ewell doesn’t like black people. Another example of racism occurs in chapter 11. This happens when the kids are walking by Mrs.Dubose’s home, and she starts yelling out racist comments about Atticus. She yells out to Jem and says, “your father is no better than the niggers and trash he works for!” (Lee, 105) She attacks their father for doing his job, but even more so attacks Jem and Scout by Yelling furiously about their father. These two ways are clearly shown in To Kill A Mockingbird and there are many other ways throughout the novel.

Like the main characters in this novel, Lee grew up in Alabama; this made it easier for her to relate to the characters in the novel as she would have understood what they would have experienced during the period when racism, discrimination and inequality was on the increase within the American society.

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is one of the few classics that efficiently addresses many issues while keeping the book interesting for its readers. The many themes that are taught in the book can be applied to real life and the many issues discussed accurately criticizes events that are going on in the real world. Due to the abundance of themes and issues that are explored in the book, some might be confused on what the novel is really trying to teach us. In my opinion, the book’s main theme is ‘social classes and their consequences’. My reasons for this is because the book has many examples of this theme, one of the main plot points in the book focuses on this theme, and because the theme is one of the most applicable to real
To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the 1930s in Maycomb, a fictional, rural town in Alabama, in the United States. Things were quite different then to the way they are now. Apart from the obvious, like the fact that there were no mobile phones, TV, the Internet etc, there were some major social and economic differences. In Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird”, there are many examples of racial profiling, prejudice, and most importantly, social injustice. For example, the poor Cunninghams are often the easy targets of prejudice, the Ewell clan is constantly being judged, and most importantly, the black society is always being racially profiled. The largest example of social injustice in Lee’s novel is the Tom Robinson case. Despite his innocence, Tom Robinson finds himself in a helpless position with little to none hope of being deemed not guilty. He was convicted of strangling, beating, and raping Mayella Ewell, though we all know that it was untrue.
The inequalities of race, social class, and age is a major theme demonstrated in the book To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee as well as in modern day society. The segregation of African Americans is a obvious problem in the text. The African Americans were always in different places than the whites and this is still happening in places like schools today. Social class has become a big problem in modern day society and in the text. Each person or family is put into a social class and that behavior is relevant in modern society.
