Throughout the past decade, numerous reports and tests have been conducted to see whether or not there has been a link between social media and low self-esteem. With the majority of adults and almost all millennials, social media has been on the rise. To some people, it's about sharing memories and connecting with families, but to others, it has turned into an addiction. After multiple hours a day mental changes might occur. A loss of self-esteem has been closely related to the fact of having an avid social life in a digital world. Being addicted to a certain task or substance is never a good value to have, in the case of using social media, lack of real-life socializing is a hazard to a person’s health. For the first article, a survey on 23,532 Norwegians from ages 16-88 was conducted. All of the participants were required to complete, web-based survey that contained the e Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Andreassen, Pallesen, Griffiths, p. 287). The results were concluded to finding a negative correlation between social media usage and self-esteem. In the discussion section, it elaborates on why certain people respond to social media in a powerful way. “People with low self-image, may also prefer communicating online instead of face-to-face” (p. 291). This portrays a message indicating that social media can create an unsafe environment for a person’s mental health by someone relying on a screen to express their emotion rather than physical appearances. Self-esteem is a global evaluative dimension of the self and determines if you are satisfied with certain aspects of your life. For example, your appearance, your personality, your abilities and your relationship with others. The media is a powerful source of tool to manipulate adolescents that portrays unrealistic images that affect the way they feel about themselves. I believe that the social media does affect the self-esteem of adolescent’s due to self-image.
The examiners randomly assigned participants to a control group (offline), exposure to a mirror (offline) and exposure to their social media profile page (online). Surveyors told all participants the study was designed to examine people’s attitudes about themselves after viewing different websites and told both offline groups that they were the control group. In the social media stimuli group, participants viewed their personal profile page for three minutes. The profile pages contained self-generated content. The mirror stimuli group viewed their reflection for three minutes. The control group viewed no stimuli. After the three minutes had elapsed, all participants completed a survey designed to measure self-esteem. To measure selective self-presentation, the examiners asked the online group if they left or edited their profile page. Compared to the control and mirror stimuli groups, participants exposed to their social media profile page reported higher levels of self-esteem. Individuals who viewed only their profile page reported greater self-esteem than individuals who also viewed other profile pages. Finally, participants who edited their profile page reported higher levels of self-esteem than those who did not. It can lower a teenager's self-esteem by having cyberbullies on the internet putting them down with their negative opinions of the teen which can also drive the teens to feel hurt, or discourgaed by letting others opinions get to them. In her article “Social Media’s Impact on Self-Esteem” Clarissa Silva analyzes the effects of social media. She is able to show how disconnected people have gotten because of being online. Which is causing many to suffer from the paradox effect and vanity validation, that has also contributed to negative impacts in many relationships. Different sets of data are used as evidence, the percentage of peoples fear of missing out (FOMO) being a prime example. Firstly, there have been significant links between our online presence and other aspects of our mental health, which has inspired the subject matter of many recent research studies around the world. There are many psychological and physical factors that affect our mental well-being due to the impact of social media. Depression and Body Dysmorphia being the leading causes, due to the content the individuals are exposed to while online. Even though researchers coined the correlation between social media use and depression as complex. Data was collected from a sample of 340 first year college students, and the findings were that the increase use of Facebook have been associated with higher levels of loneliness. Also the extensive use of Facebook has been associated with higher rates of disordered eating and body image insecurity.
Curated images, calculated presentation, epidemic feelings of inadequacy and rampant self-esteem issues all characterize today’s social media culture. Extensive research now supports the detrimental effect that social media has on relationships, mental health, and overall well-being. Kelly Austin, a contributor with Teen Shield, cites the benefits of social media – claiming increased interconnectivity and confidence building. While I agree with some of the points she proposes, I support that social media in fact has a net negative effect on its users. I aim to first shed light on her article and the issues that she fails to address, then transition to how we can all move forward with social media in a beneficial way.
Social media is described, by the Merriam-Webster dictionary (2015), as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)”. As few as 10 years ago the term social media was yet to be coined, but within that decade the use of these blogs, websites and sharing platforms has increased exponentially with no plateau in sight. From creating Instagram accounts for household pets, to sharing Halloween themed baking ideas over Pinterest, people today have access to social media outlets for almost everything. Today about 74% of people ages 18-65 use some form of a social networking site (Pew, 2014). Facebook takes the lead in social media usage with about 71% of those adults. LinkedIn and Pinterest are tied for second at 28% of users, 26% use Instagram, and Twitter falls last in the top 5 most used social medias with 23% of users (Pew, 2014). In September of 2013 the Pew Research Center measured that 90% of adults ages 18-29 used these social media outlets on a daily basis, which is an astonishing increase from the 9% that was measured in February 2005 (Pew, 2014). In this day and age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. It has created a platform for people to share information instantly and communicate with people all around the world. Facebook is the most outstanding example of successful social media network. According to the first quarter 2015 earnings announcement by Facebook, the site has achieved 1.44 billion active users per month, and 65% of which are daily active users. Other social networking sites such as Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn are also a powerful means of communication. Some say people who use social networking sites are prone to social isolation. Despite opposition, I am convinced that social networking helps people who are shy and socially isolated to connect with other people. This concludes that social networking can help people who have low self esteem other than lowering their self-esteem any more.Although many argue that social networking can exacerbate feelings of disconnect and put children at higher risk for depression, low self-esteem and eating disorders,I believe otherwise. According to my research, I have found that more than 25% of teens report that social makes them feel less shy, 28% feel more outgoing, 20% report feeling more confident,in which 53% of teens were identified as being shy (5 Boroughs). This means that social networking brings out a better person in most, and makes them feel better about themselves other than feeling bad inside.
The image of perfection for women has been drastically altered due to the heavy influence of music and social media. Typically in the African-American community, young girls struggle more with low self-esteem and body image issues now more than ever before. Trying to match the status quo of how people expect you to look causes many young girls and women to feel as if they are not worthy enough to be treated as the beauty queens they are. With women forgetting their worth and mimicking what they see on TV or in videos, the black male is also suffering from trying to find his black queen through all the broken girls. It is a vicious cycle of putting a specific type of girl that the influencers deem beautiful on top, then putting all others down. The girls who are put down lose their confidence and sense of self-worth allowing men to treat them as such and the cycle continues with a different type of “perfect” on top.
Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube are web-based activities that provide individuals access to build a public or a semi-public profile within a confined system, connect and find users that they share a connection with as well as view and navigate the list of connections that are made by other participants of the systems (Boyd & Ellison, 2007). Social media is widely used by young adults contributing to about 84% of the total usage (Smith, 2011). Some of the popular reasons for widespread use of social media are staying in touch with near and dear ones especially with friends and family, making new friends, following famous politicians and celebrities and also in search of potential relationships (Smith, 2011). However as the use of social media becomes more widespread, we cannot help but express concerns over the effects that social media usage may have on our behavior. Over the past couple of decades, research has strongly linked social media usage with negative behavioral outcomes and is known to affect one’s overall well-being. This essay will begin by discussing some of the behavioral issues that result from social media usage, followed by criticisms of this argument. The recommendation will then highlight some ways by which the behavioural problems could be dealt with, acknowledging that self-monitoring and self-regulation are the main ways to tackle the issue.
