Some say people who use social networking sites are prone to social isolation. Despite opposition, I am convinced that social networking helps people who are shy and socially isolated to connect with other people. This concludes that social networking can help people who have low self esteem other than lowering their self-esteem any more.Although many argue that social networking can exacerbate feelings of disconnect and put children at higher risk for depression, low self-esteem and eating disorders,I believe otherwise. According to my research, I have found that more than 25% of teens report that social makes them feel less shy, 28% feel more outgoing, 20% report feeling more confident,in which 53% of teens were identified as being shy (5 Boroughs). This means that social networking brings out a better person in most, and makes them feel better about themselves other than feeling bad inside. In conclusion, social networking has decisively proven to be good for our society. It is essential to recognize that social networking can benefit our society tremendously by helping students do better in school, spreading information/news, and helping those that are socially isolated to get out of their shell and connect with other people. Communicating and interacting with people, can be something that we do on a daily basis. People have said, that the internet is a great place to interact with others. Although others think differently, they believe face-to-face is the only way to really interact with people. In the article, “Social Networking: Failure to Connect,” Tom Meltzer suggests that social networking can hurt a person’s well-being. In the other article, “Can Facebook Help Overcome Shyness?” the author Michael Rosenwald describes some of the benefits of social networking, especially for shy people. I believe that social networking does not help people overcome their shyness; because people can hide who they really are, because you are still going to meet face-to-face,
The carnival grotesque, with its freak shows and abnormal humans, was very popular and controversial back in the late 18th to early 19th century, by then it had matured into a distinct form of entertainment. In the 21st century, has the concept become dated? Has the freak show been revealed for the mistreatment and subjugation of many poor human beings? We live in times where many things that were once discriminated are now accepted and many kinds of people recognized as members of society and although there are instances that would challenge that notion, it is only a minority. This represents the progress mankind has made to understand one another. But has the idea of the freak show been abandoned with this new period? It is unfortunate
Parallel the development of technology, social networking becomes widespreadly with people in the world today. Everyone is spending a large amount of time using these websites in order to satisfy their demand in life by surfing the internet and having many social networking services such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,… The statistics in the article Social Networking Fact Sheet present that 74% of online adults use social networking sites (January 2014), 56% of internet users do at least one of the creating or curating activities we studied and 32% of internet users do both creating and curating activities (August 2012). In addition, according to 30 Statistics about Teens and Social Networking, written by Taylor Thomas, studying with American teens, 73% of teens are on a social network and a lot of teens ages 12-17 go online, accounted for 93%. As a result, many people have not fully understand what benefits that social network can bring to users. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of social networking and to show the advantages and disadvantages when using it.
According to an article in the International Journal of Scientific Research and Publications, one of the greatest benefits of social media is the mean of communication. Social media makes it easy for you to communicate with families and friends all around the world, but is also helps you to build new relationships and socialize more. People that usually have no time to meet others in person because of limited availability stay in contact more often by using email, facetime and also by text messages. The author states that social media works as a bridge of communication between people that share the same interests and that networking sites allows them to spread communicate their ideas with others.
There is debate over these social networking sites; do the benefits outweigh the dangers? Some people argue that social networking sites promote increased communication with friends and family, familiarize people with valuable computer skills, and allow contact and interactions with people from around the world. Others argue that these sites expose children to predators, increase vulnerability to computer viruses, lower worker productivity, and promote narcissism and short attention spans. Social networking sites entice people to spend more time online and less time involved in face-to-face interaction. On an average day it is said that American’s waste about 17% of their day on the internet interacting on social media and networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and MySpace. The popularity of these sites has more than
Social media is exposing youngsters to the important issues around the world. Social media also helps to reinforce friendship and offer a sense of belonging. While excessive social media might isolate kids, a study conducted by Griffith University and the University of Queensland in Australia found that American teens feel less lonely than their historical counterparts. They report feeling less isolated and have become more socially adept, partly because of an increased social media use (Knorr). Social media also allows the youngsters to express themselves and share their talent with the vast range of audiences. Likewise, social media also helps to boost self-esteem of youngsters. Social media also can be a valuable source of emotional support and being honest in social media gives a feeling of more social support to youngsters. In research published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, reported that college students who viewed their own Facebook profiles enjoyed a boost in self-esteem
Social network technology does not create havens for people with narcissistic tendencies and/or poor self-esteem. In the article, “Are Social Networks Messing with Your Head?”, David Resalvo is asking if social media is messing with mental health. He writes about how social media networks have evolved from a fad to a trend. He expresses the possibility of a relationship between loneliness and the use of social media networks. The article also expresses that people may use social media networks to boost their self-esteem.
Communication barriers are not the only issue that has been brought on by social media. Extensive social media use has also been known to affect a person’s self-esteem. Some individuals suffer from a low self-esteem and limit themselves to social media in hopes to create a different image of them. According to Charles Cooley, “The thing that moves us to pride or shame is not the mere mechanical reflection of ourselves, but an imputed sentiment, the imagined effect of this reflection upon another's mind" (Morine, 2009). For some teens and young adults, social media may help them open up and achieve a higher self-esteem. On the other hand, social media on other teens and young adults may have a completely opposite effect. In an article titled, Is Facebook Making Your Child Depressed, it is stated that social media websites such as Facebook “can create a skewed reality that makes teens feel alienated” (PR, 2012). When a person, that is not completely happy with their life, goes onto social media and reads all about other people enjoying a multitude of activities and enjoying their lives this could
In addition to providing unique opportunities to interact in online environments, social networking also facilitates face-to-face interaction. Social networking has this impact by providing digital environments in which it is safe and comfortable for users to meet new people and establish new relationships. Social networking

Many people in our society can relate. We wake up, check our phones. We go to school, check our phones. We go home, check our phones. And right before we go to bed, we check our phones. And for what? What are we constantly checking? Imagine logging out of social networking sites for one day. How would you feel? You would probably feel disconnected and want to log back on as soon as possible. This generation uses these websites to connect, to stay in the loop, and to become involved. However, people will take advantage of the use of these websites, and in return, the websites take over the majority of their life. The act of constantly wanting to be
This study focused on trying to prove the social enhancement hypothesis, which means that socially confident (extroverted) people that are popular in real life have the most to gain from social networks and the social compensation hypothesis, which means introverted (shy/reserved) individuals are more likely to use social networking sites because it must more easier to make friends online than offline. Social networking has become a major part of society. Many people wake up each day and check social media websites specifically throughout Twitter and Facebook first thing in the morning instead of reaching for a newspaper. Since people are spending such a large amount of time surfing social networks, it is important to point out some of the positive and negative effects that social networking can have on a society. The positive effects of social networking sites are allow people to create new relationships and reconnect with friends and family. Increased communication, even online, strengthens relationships. And the other is social networking sites make people share everything that they want and bring people with common interests together, offer exposure to new ideas from around the world, and lower inhibitions to overcome social anxiety.
Even though social media isn’t only used for social interaction, it is an important aspect of adolescents’ lives. Social media provides an avenue for them to stay connected with peers they have met through school, sports teams, church, etc (Ito, 2008). Social networking can also help shy adolescents have a more non-threatening way to interact with peers because they aren’t interacting face-to-face (Rosen, 2011).
Loneliness and social depression are additional effects of social networks. Teenagers live to compare. The questions of “Whose smarter/prettier/thinner/more fun?” always seem to be in mind and social networking sites are making this worse. With the ability to view others changed profile pictures, status updates, and check ins. These online destinations have also been reported increase cyber bullying, and the feeling of rejection, Aaron Smith states. For example when a girl sees her ex change relationship statues, yet she clearly has not moved on yet, seeing it right there knowing all their friends can see it, only caused harm and sadness that could have been avoided. Also teenagers who are naturally outgoing start losing the distinction between genuine friends and acquaintances. People are spending time maintaining relationships with
