There are many social roles that women were expected to have during the regency period, although many things were restricted from them. Men were the dominant figure, and they had a great deal of access to anything they wished to do or have. Women cleaned their homes, cooked, and acted tremendously ladylike. Many women were not even accepted as wives if they were not considered “appropriate” to the levels of their society (Armstrong 59). Women were there for the moral support of their husbands, to make them happy, and to listen to everything mentioned or conversed. Women that were unmarried or under thirty was accompanied by a chaperone anytime in the presence of a man, unless it is professional business (Pool 55). In Pride and Prejudice, there was women such as Lady catherine de Bourgh, Mrs Bennet, and Charlotte Lucas Collins with very different social roles during their time period.
Although many women were expected to act “appropriate” to their society, Lady Catherine De Bourgh picked her own social roles to live by (Armstrong 59). Lady Catherine, a patron, inherited all of her husband's’ money after he perished and became she one of the richest women in the regency period. She never lifted a finger, and many people assisted her (“Pride and Prejudice”). Not only was she wealthy, but many looked up to her as a role model. This was not always a good thing.
