Social Stratification And Economic Placement

Individuals within a society are grouped into certain rankings that is based on their wealth, income, race and education known as the social stratification. Sociologist use this to determine the social standings of individuals within a society. Social stratification can also appear in much smaller groups. These groups such as the work place, schools, and businesses can “take the form of a distribution of power and authority down the ranks”. (Cole, 2017) The Caste system is also another form of stratification that one does not get a choice in. They are born into it and regardless of their talents will hold positions that are given to them their whole life. Social mobility is the ability for individuals to move about their social standings.

Sexual orientation is “the clear, persistent desire of a person for affiliation with one sex rather than the other”, otherwise known as sexual preference. (http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com) Prejudice against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transsexuals (otherwise known as LGBT people) remain widespread in American society. LGBT people have always been a target for discrimination. Like other forms of prejudice, this discrimination is based on a hostile attitude toward a specific group and in this case minority. The current strides in the controversy of the legalization of the same sex marriage is a prime example of this discrimination. Sexual orientation prejudice

Economic stratification is the different rankings in social class are separated in different economic ways. These differences can vary from clothing, cars, perfumes, cigarette brands, etc. There are many ways you can tell what a person stratification is just by the way they look or the things they have. Usually these ranking go from lower class to middle class then the upper class. Each of these classes have very different ways of living and what they do to maintain a certain status.

Minority stress theory posits that those with one or more marginalized social identity experience social stressors, such as prejudice, which is deleterious to mental and physical health (Meyer, 2003). Though sexual orientation can be a non-salient identity, for some their sexual orientation may be categorized based on observable stereotypical characteristics such as clothing style, mannerisms, and vocal inflections (Mize, 2016), and will experience heterosexism as a result.. Health status impacts labor market outcomes as it influences an individuals’ opportunity for employment and employee productivity (human capital), and has an adverse effect on earnings. Mize (2016) conducted two studies examining wage inequality among sexual minorities (analysis did not include racial differences). The authors found that bisexual women report lower wages compared to their lesbian and heterosexual counterparts, even when human capital (equivalent education level, profession, age) were accounted for. The authors suggest that prejudicial treatment of bisexual women negatively affects human capital and hence, wealth accumulation.

Stratification and the division of people into social classes is a fundamental part of American society. Stratification is a concept that is universal; it is found in every country, every nation of the world. It is a system in which large groups of people, not individuals, are divided into different layers according to their relative property, power, and prestige. Stratification applies not only to the different nations of the world as a whole, but to the different groups of people within those nations as well. Each of these groups is stratified into its own class; the group of people ranked most closely to them in property,

The issue in this article can be explained by Social Identity Theory because there is an apparent notion of in-group favoritism versus out-group sexual discrimination. The goal of Social Identity Theory is to explain group relationships and conflict (Cable & Welbourne, 1994). People classify their social identities with characteristics such as gender, race, or ethnicity, and in this particular case there is a gender identity discrimination issue. Social Identity Theory helps explain people’s tendencies to see oneself as part of the group, often resulting in people viewing others as “us” and “them” (Foster, 2013). Social stratification is vertical hierarchical arrangement which differentiate people as superior or inferior. Societies are stratified in three ways which are,1) Social Class; 2) Racial and Ethnic stratification; and 3) Gender.

Sexual orientation is one of the four components of sexuality and is distinguished by an enduring emotional, romantic, sexual or affectionate attraction to individual of a particular gender. The three other components of sexuality are biological sex, gender identity, and social sex role. Three sexual orientations are commonly recognized. These being : homosexual; attraction to one's own sex, heterosexual; attraction to the opposite sex, and bisexual; attraction to both sexes (Clausen 25-27).

Social stratification speaks of a system by which a society orders classes of people in a hierarchy. Here in the United States, it is perfectly clear that some groups have better standing, supremacy, and riches than other groups. You have the upper-class who pretty much have everything in life. The middle-class living paid check to paid check and the lower-class who just finds a way to get by. They are the ones who social has dean as “living in poverty” which is hard to come out of because it’s a vicious cycle to break.

America is known as the land of the free and home of the brave. When thinking of this you think about all the opportunities presented to people and all the freedom. An idea of America is that we’re a meritocracy, which means anyone can be able to to become anything they want as long as they work hard playing by the rules. Along with that many people believe that diversity will bring together the country and unite us all but that’s not the case. America is not a meritocracy.

Social stratification depends on various factors, for example, influence, riches, races, instruction levels and sort of occupations and so forth. The separation in the social classes is additionally reliant on the political and monetary states of a specific country.The social pecking order in America, it can extensively be partitioned into six classes: Capitalist class, Upper middle class, Middle class, Working class, Working poor class and Underclass.

Sexual orientation is used to describe what gender or genders someone is sexually attracted to. Sexual orientation is something that cannot be simply told by the way people look, their hobbies or sexual identities. One cannot make sure people’s sexual orientation until you are informed of that.

At times, people will treat one unfavorably based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation; this is defined as discrimination (Article 14: Protection from discrimination). In 2015, the United States House of Representatives amended the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was an act that protected discrimination in the workplace, so that it would protect against inequity in all aspects of life based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex (Cicilline). Although in today’s media there is much focus on bigotry for sexual orientation and gender identity, discrimination based on sex is an issue that still needs to be addressed and mended.

In our society today we have system of social stratification. Social stratification is a system in which groups of people are divided into layers according to their relative property, power, and prestige. Sometimes as humans we find it challenging to keep up with the person next to us who has nicer materialistic items; being a young woman who lives in a prestigious college town I notice everyone seems to have a ridiculous amount of money and/or nice cars and at times, this makes me feel out of place. This would be an example of social stratification, by showing how some groups within the college student community have power and prestige. Some of their parents work for the school, or work for a large corporate businesses and have the money to give to their children. Social stratification links society together in many aspects. When it comes to treating people within a society differently from others shows social inequality; which is unequal sharing of societal resources, education, power, health, etc. Other types of social stratification that influences me directly are social stratification of wealth, social class, and sex.

In class we had a discussion on social stratification, economic specialization and its rules with in Mesopotamia, Egypt and Harappa. So, today I hope that elaborate on what economic specialization and social stratification is and how it pertains to Mesopotamia, Egypt and Harappa. First, we will look at the definition of both terms because I believe if you do not have a definition you may not know what I am talking about and also you know exactly what you are looking for. Second, I will start off with how social stratification in economic specialization relates to Mesopotamian. After that, I will move on to Egypt and talk about how the terms relate. Finally, I will discuss the rapper and maybe even show how unique they are in comparison to the other. Hopefully, with evidence from the book I can paint a vivid picture, so that we are on the same wavelength, which would mean it is explained well.
