The two readings that I have chosen are ‘social work in health care: an international perspective’ by Pockett and ‘social work practice in mental health’ by Bland. Both readings interpret about mental health. The context from these both readings has influenced me to choose them because I found it interesting how Bland wanted to communicate about mental illness through telling a personal lived experience story; this provided first-hand about the challenges and suffering of having a mental illness. It gave me a more insight about how social work might look like in mental health as I began to imagine what it would be like working with a client in mental health and the reading by Pockett made me acknowledge and reaffirm my values in mental health
n social work practice, the strengths perspective has emerged as an alternative to the more common pathology-oriented approach to helping clients. Instead of focusing on clients' problems and deficits, the strengths perspective centers on clients' abilities, talents, and resources. The social worker practicing from this approach concentrates wholly on identifying and eliciting the client's strengths and assets in assisting them with their problems and goals (Saleebey, 2006). Nonetheless, Critical social work seeks to address social injustices, as opposed to focusing on individual people's problems. Critical perspective and prevention propose autonomous and democratic organization which allows people previously silent to express their need and expectations. Prevention is based on the principle of empowerment.
This essay will identify a case I have been involved in and have continuously had to assess whilst on placement. It will refer to a child who will be identified as A. A is a young carer and has only recently returned home after being removed from his mothers care due to her having a substance abuse problem and mental health concerns. I will link the legal framework that was relevant to this case study and describe actions taken. Additionally these actions will demonstrate the application of social work methods and theories that were contributive elements in his intervention, offering explanations as to why these particular methods were used. Before closing, the essay will review any issues of discrimination with a reflection of the

For this paper, I have decided to research two social work theories and how those theories apply to residents in long term care facilities. The primary focus will be those residents who are alert, oriented, and showing minimal symptoms of dementia.
The class SW 6030 Human Development and the Social Environment has brought new insights and makes me see some topics in a different perspective. The critical reflection paper number one will integrate different concepts that I learned so far in this class.
According to Duffy (2016), there are two different types of social work practice when it comes to working alongside a disadvantaged population. The first kind, is used more often and is called conventional social work approach, which focuses its attention on undertaking assessment and ensuring that individuals are families are received the correct support through organised services and support. On the other hand, critical social work, the less utilized approach aims to challenge the inequalities and oppression in society, by targeting the societal structure via activism and research, in order to bring forth criticism and questions on discourses attached to particular marginalised groups. The author proposes that both social work practices are important, however, critical social work should be emphasized on more frequently, especially with groups such as the ageing population as it targets the stubborn discourses (Duffy, 2016). Mattsson broadens critical social work, by relating it to critical reflection. Critical theorists have proposed critical reflection as a method to understand how social work practices can uphold oppression due to seemingly everyday actions, words and attitudes. Therefore, this can have an implication on how social workers execute their practice, as ordinary and structural features of bureaucratic hierarchies may senselessly abide social workers to uphold and reproduce social oppression, even though they might be well-intentioned. Critical reflection
The labelling and stigma attached to mental illness has held and retained my interest over the course of the semester, as it has equipped me with future skills to be able to apply to my future practice as a social worker as well as to my own personal life. Having had a close family member of
One of the key things that stood out for me while doing this course and before has made me realize that social work is harder than I thought it would be. There are many critical aspects of social work that help us work with clients. One of the biggest things that have stood out for me was that helping people is more complicated than I thought there are so many critical things in the process that work to help others. Therefore it is not as easy as I expected it would be. The main reasons that I wanted to do this course was because I ultimately wanted to do to help people. I have learned that many factors come into play in the field of social work, including levels of practice, ethics and critical reflection and self-care.
State the significance to social work practice and social policy: Food insecurity and malnutrition is an endless pressing issue on the macro level of social work across the nation. This is a significance part of a social workers job is to address these issues on a larger scale. Social workers incorporate multisector strategies to address this issue through different agencies hoping to develop evaluations that would produce results of the need base for nutritional and food security programs, which leads to funding for these programs as well. The social polices of this includes providing food pantries, food banks, healthier options in school systems, and nutritional programs that helps reduce hunger and to address the poor heath concerns associated
The one thing that I disagreed with, and will use immediately from this module is a statement that was made in the Evaluation of a Intervention. The module stated that if trained staff are not available to evaluate a intervention, contact evaluating firms for good ideas. I disagree with that statement, because I strongly believe that clients should be the ones who evaluate the intervention. The clients are the ones who are affected by the intervention, and constructive criticism offers valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of social workers. Not all interventions may work for everyone, but if an intervention was helpful for most clients, then it should be used again in the future. Also, evaluations on the performance of the social
Social workers and mental health providers work in a field where trauma is prevalent. This means that people who work in these types of fields are more likely to experience what is called “secondary traumatization”, “vicarious traumatization” or “compassion fatigue”. These terms all essentially describe the negative impact of bonding with a trauma survivor and exposure to the survivor’s traumatic encounters (McCann & Pearlman 1990). These terms are different than and should not be confused “with burnout”. The term “burnout” refers to “a psychological syndrome in response to chronic interpersonal stressors on the job” (Devilly, Wright, & Varker 2009). Secondary traumatization is directly related to witnessing or being exposed to the trauma someone else has experienced whereas burnout isn’t specific to a specific field, it can happen to anyone with any type of occupation.
Critical reflection is both a theory and a process that involves engaging and understanding the interconnections between assumptions, emotions, thoughts, reactions, meanings and values (Fook & Garnder, 2007). Critical reflection in social work can challenge assumptions, values and beliefs either from our own upbringing or stemmed from societal attitudes and perceptions (Agglias et al., 2010).
Chapter 8 in “Mental Health in Social Work” focused on anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, trauma, and stressor-related disorders, the various areas that contribute to these disorders, and treatment options. The chapter described stressor-related disorders and noted the many facets which contribute to these disorders. The factors include; genetic, biological, psychological, and social influences. Various treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, self-help manuals, crisis debriefing, medication, and their effectiveness and limitations were discussed.
Our personalities, ethics, and morals are molded by the environment we were raised in and through our life experiences. Even when two different individuals have extremely similar experiences, the outcome of these experiences are affected by other factors such as: the individual’s support system, the lesson learned from the experience and the outcome of the situation. My experiences and life lessons have taught me that although you might not always be dealt the cards you feel you deserve, with the right perspective, you can always turn the game around. I grew up in California with foreign parents who were continuously taken advantage of because of their position and lack of knowledge on how to strive within their environment. My goal is to support others, foreign or not, which might be at a disadvantage due to their life circumstances and lack of resources.
To find out the role of social worker's with elderly patients who have depression, the qualitative research method would be more beneficial to use. The simple solution to my question would to ask a social worker what do they do? But that wouldn’t be as detailed as completing actually analysis using the qualitative research method. Using the qualitative research I would ask several elderly patients who have depression about their experience with their social worker. I would be sure to follow the interview questions that I have (Structured Interview) I would also give them a questionnaire. I would be as try to be as detailed as possible in order to make sure I have enough data that is beneficial to me. I would also conduct and observational research. The observation research would be beneficial to me because I can see exactly what the social workers does and how the client interacts with the social workers. Which would essentially to answering my question.
