In my own understanding, a social worker is a person who helps individuals, families and communities to improve their well-being. A bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement for becoming a qualified social worker. However, there are other qualification degrees for this profession such as, master’s degree and a PhD degree in social work. An example of a personal, and professional experience was last year at my internship. My task social worker assigned me to conduct an initial intake for a new patient who was admitted to the nursing home. As I approach the patient, I realized that he was an Orthodox Jewish man, based on his clothing. He also had his son present. I introduced myself, then stretched out my hands to greet his son, but he did not greet me in that manner. He then told me that in his culture, people who are of the opposite sex are not allowed to shake hands. The only exception to that rule is if they are married, parents, children or siblings. This was an awareness that was so different from my culture and belief system.

While in high school and in my earlier years of post-secondary school, I did not have any knowledge of what a social worker was let alone know what duties they perform. It was in 2012 where I discovered the profession of a social worker. The profession came to my understanding when a situation came upon a particular family that attend my local church. This particular family felt in their hearts to take in two nephews into their home. This situation came about for them due to the condition of their home and the lifestyle that their single mother was

#1 A: Social work can be defined as a broad profession, with the sole purpose of improving the lives and relieving the hardships of the members of a population. Social work addresses many problems for the well being of society, including: health care, criminal justice and domestic violence, economic and public policies, child and family welfare, as well as homelessness. Social workers are trained professionals with the education and tools necessary to address problems from several different perspectives, with the intention of helping the masses and not just individuals. The meaning of social work is any work carried out by some trained personnel with the aim of making the living conditions of those people who are in need easier. To perform the duties of a social worker correctly, there is much need for self-evaluation (Barker, 2003). People need to realize themselves, what they advocate for, what they feel is the right thing to do and what is not. By self-evaluation, we mean that each person has to put themselves in the shoes of the minority at times and work their way around. For instance, how does one react when they are faced with racism when they are among people of a higher social class? How people react when in such situations, reflect their beliefs as well as values. The world is full of different people.
