Societal Roles In Jane Eyre

Class is a social construct that society employs to compel individuals to follow conventional roles. These societal roles are also dependent on gender as it can be seen in the two novels. In Jane Eyre and Northanger Abbey, the authors both use the bildungsroman of two young women to illustrate the confinements and conflicts that the protagonists face as they strive to find their own identity within societal expectations. In Northanger Abbey, Austen writes Catherine’s story in a third person perspective. By writing in this lens, the story has a tendency to be along the lines of a fairy-tale as Austen writes Catherine’s struggle to fit into societal expectations and her own expectations. The narration in the novel generally makes the “most contemptible characters as those who place undue emphasis on social station; and they come from all levels of the social ladder.” (McMaster 129) This can be seen when Austen presents Catherine and Isabella’s friendship as a lesson for Catherine to not trust people too easily. Catherine realizes that Isabella is not who she thought she was as Isabella abandons her brother for a wealthier man; through this scene, Austen illustrates the inextricable connection between class and wealth and that wealth is the driving force in people’s actions. The author insinuates that Isabella becomes a villain in Catherine’s eyes because she chose a wealthier man over Catherine’s brother. The Thorpe siblings are portrayed in a distasteful tone as “Isabella is continually acting out a script that makes her ridiculous. At the same time, her brother, as trapped in the stereotypes of masculinity as she is in femininity…” (Gilbert and Gubar 130). This again brings forth the idea that social class is determined by wealth and from Catherine’s perspective are not worth associating with.
