Society During The Feudal Age

During medieval times the feudal system was practiced in England, the feudal system was a hierarchy of different social classes where the Church was at the top and working peasants were at the bottom. The feudal system was introduced in Europe around the 8th century, with the Carolingian dynasty and Charles Martel granting land to his nobles (“History of Feudalism”). Feudalism does not spread through Europe until the 10th century, when most European countries become primarily Christian. The downfall of feudalism appears around the 13th century, feudalism becomes problematic due to the growth of corruption within the system. The core principles of feudalism begin to fade in exchange for greed. No longer were fiefs expected to repay the king with an army, but instead with cash. Additionally it became increasingly harder to become a fief, as the status of a fief was passed down from family members. While feudalism dissolves into government where the king rules over all and collects taxes in many countries, feudalism remains in multiple countries, including Germany, Italy, and France (“History of Feudalism”). The remaining feudalism systems in Europe are dismantled as a result of the French Revolution or Napoleon in the 15th century.

Before they could wield swords and fight battles they must start their training early in boyhood. First starting to care for horses and play the harp. Next they became a Paige. They learn archery skills and improve on other skills. Then a Squire who finally practice sword play and improve on horse riding. Last after being dubbed a knight by their king or queen they become a knight. They can now lead armies into battle and joust for the king, queen, lords, ladies, and rich nobles. They had many weapons including a battle ax, a lance, a crossbow, a longbow, a shield a sword and many more interesting weapons. There were also many pieces that made up their armor, but the biggest thing was chain mail. It was a brilliant invention that stopped warriors from getting stabbed but they could still feel the momentum of the blow. A few knights belonged to the king, but mostly the knights and armies belonged to the lords and ladies. Once they find out the king is out numbered by thousands they decide to rebuttal throwing the whole feudal system

The knights were the warriors of the time period in between the fall of Rome and the beginning of the Renaissance, also known as the Middle Ages. Knights had to undergo years of training starting as a young boy. Though they were well trained, knight still needed protection. To protect themselves, knights would wear complex armor that usually took over and hour to put on, and usually needed the help of his squire. In order to fight well, they needed strong weapons. A knight’s weapons were sharp and durable.

During jousting in combat, Knights would have a lance, a Roundel also called a dagger, a sword which was attached to the waist of the Knight, a mace, and a spikes attached to the knuckles of the gauntlets which the Knight wore. There were many types of swords Knights used. The most used was the broadsword, but they also used the Falchion, Bastardsword, the Cutting sword, and the Great sword. They might also use a pike and halberd. Many different armor types were used by Knights. They first used mail armor. This was used to defend against cuts and stab, but the Knights could still be injured by blunt weapons such as maces. This could fracture bones and leave the Knight incapable of fighting. Next came plate armor. This was very expensive to make and only a few Nobles had it. It was nearly impossible to cut plate Armor, but the Knights were still vulnerable to blunt attacks. Plate armor did weigh some, but still allowed the user to be mobile. A well-made full suit of plate armor is about 45 pounds which is about the same amount soldiers carry today. Then you have to add the weight of their weapons which is about 20-30 pound more. A Knighting ceremony was where a squire turned into a Knight They would wear white vesture which symbolized purity. A knight in the middle ages was having possessed great combat skills and who adhered to the code of Chivalry. Any free man could become a knight but the process of becoming a knight and equipping a knight with a horse was very costly this meant that knights would generally come from a noble, or wealthy family. A potential knight had to have the right connections. The honour of being a knight eventually passed from a knight to his sons.

To become a knight in the Medieval world, it had taken a lot of training.Their training had started when the knight was seven years old. While there training,they would have to spend time with the ladies of the castle. They were called pages.In this time the women's if the castle taught the page how to dance, play songs, and sing.After seven years of being a page, the page becomes a squire. They would practice on how to fight, and learn how to take care of horses. Since there was only one of him, he gave land to loyal Lords and Knights to rule land ("People of the Middle Ages"). The king would give land to Knights, who would become vassals. The king even allowed peasants to make a living off his land which would take place in for example a manor run by a Lord or vassal (Brooks 1). From the feudal system, Kings also gained many things. From the Knights turned vassals, a king would gain military services from them ("People of the Middle Ages"2).

Medieval Europe, which lasted from about 500-1300 CE, originally was filled with Germanic invasions and threats from groups such as the Islamic Caliphate, the Magyars, and the Vikings. The constant instability from these external threats eventually demanded for a new system of government, which for Europe was feudalism. This system of government would last for centuries, until the eventual rise of towns and trade around Europe began the downfall of feudalism. Japan, although geographically independent of Europe, developed a similar system in around 1300 CE, which lasted until around 1600. After any strong central power fell off, warring clans needed to bolster their military prowess, so military leaders began to hire samurai to fight the opposition.
