In the local community there are big two gangs that are rivals, and always want to fight the other. They are mean and are always causing trouble. They are afraid of almost nothing and won’t think twice about pulling out a knife and cutting someone up. The two sides are the Socs, and the Greasers. Both these sides are very different, but in some ways they are similar.
The Socs are a richer gang, they live in the good part of town. The Socs always get what they want because they are richer, and can afford to do anything. They hate just about every part of the greasers. They don't like the Greasers because they think all the Greasers want to do is take their girls. “Need a haircut greaser?” (S.E. Hilton 5) The Socs have so much time and

These people aren't rich and spoiled, and get whatever they want when they want, like the Socs. They aren't even in the middle class, most of them are poor or rejected, or their parents hate them. These people have hair grease in their hair, hence why they are called Greasers. “Juvenile delinquent, you're no good!” (S.E. Hilton 136) These people are juvenile delinquents, who don't think think twice about cutting a Socs, or pulling out a switchblade. One of them actually killed a Soc because one of their friends was drowning his fellow gang member. Right after this they ran away to an abandoned church to hid. Then the church caught a blaze while there was a few kids there for a picnic. The same kids, the one drowning, and the one that killed the Soc, jumped in the church and saved them both. The one who almost died drowning lived, and saved all the children, but the one who killed the Soc wasn't so lucky, and he died. Other from that they usually have fair fights. “A fair fight isn't rough” (S.E. Hilton 29) A fair fight for them is a fight one person vs one person, or a amount of people vs the same amount of people in a fight. Guns, knives, blades, and and weapons or not allowed in these fights to help reduce injuries, and the chance of someone dying. That's what the Greaser Gang is …show more content…
One way is that the both see the same sunset at the end of the day. This shows that they are part of the same world, even if they are on different sides of town, and are completely different. This also means that they are the same even if they are labeled Greasers, and Socs. Another way is the way they think sometimes. Sometimes they both realize that no matter what they do, nothing will change. “They're running!” (S.E. Hilton 145) The Greasers could fight the Socs in a big brawl and lose, then almost nothing will change except some bragging rights. “ And tonight…people get hurt in rumbles, maybe killed. I'm sick of it because it doesn't do any good.” (S.E. Hilton 116-117) If the Greasers won, nothing will change, and just like the Socs all they would have is bragging rights. So that's how the Greasers and the Socs are both human, and the
In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the Socs are the ones to blame for all of the problems. After all they are the cause of the rumble. The Socs are no good drunk 24/7 idiots who need to turn their ego down, and intelligence up. They screw up MANY times in the book. Yah yah, greasers are not perfect, but at least they have some common sense. And I’ll tell you why the greasers are innocent and the Socs are not.
One similarity between the Socials and Greasers was, the Greasers and Socials both had their own parts of town that is theirs. “What do they want? This is our territory. What are the socials doing this far east?” (S.E. Hinton 54) If the Greasers were to go to the Socials part of town, they would get jumped. A second example of why the Greasers and the Socials are similar is, that the Socials and Greasers lost someone they cared very deeply about. They lost someone and they are still moving and not letting the death of a loved one hold them back. “Then I leaned back and closed my eyes so I wouldn’t see Bob lying there. This can’t be happening. This can’t be happening. This can’t be. . . “You really killed him, huh, Johnny.” (S.E. Hinton 57) “Johnny was dead.” (S.E. Hinton 150)
There were conflicts between the Socs that conflicted with the greasers. They were two opposite groups that didn't get along. The Socs, "the jet-set...West-side rich kids, wear madras shirts, smell of English leather, and drive new sports cars..." (6). Socs were rich, while greasers were low class. "Soc" is an abbreviation of the Socials, which are the West-side rich kids. Socs had a better reputation than the greasers.
The Socs mostly came from houses with two parents, drive fine cars, wear fashionable clothing, and even given the freedom they wanted. Instead of focusing on all the goods that the Socs had, they decided to focus on their hatred towards the Greasers. They wanted to jump the Greasers and do whatever it took to cause conflict. “You Greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional. We're sophisticated--- cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us” (Hinton 33). The Greasers feel emotions, but the Socs are too cool to feel anything. Instead of the Socs taking advantage of everything they had, the Socs got editorials in the newspaper for being a public disgrace one day and a benefit to society the next day. Randy and Cherry seem to be the only ones to realize the error of the Socs ways. Cherry feels sympathy for the Greasers even after her boyfriend, Bob, was killed.
The socs and the greasers shares a sense of hatred against each other, they fight with each other both verbally and physically. One of the instances that shows their conflict externally was the 'Saturday Night Rumble'. The two gangs " moved in a circle under the light, counter-clockwise, eyeing
The difference in social class definitely took its toll on the two of these gangs. The Soc’s and Greaser’s opinion would change from with experiences, but for the most part it was a clash for who owned the town. The Socs were the “good guys” and the Greasers were the “troublemakers” of town, although this was definitely not the case but because of the unchanging prejudice opinions were placed on both of the groups it would not change. For example, Ponyboy explained that maybe the Greasers and Socs aren’t so different after all. On page 40, Ponyboy starts to wonder how different he is from any of the Socs, “It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from her patio and the one I saw from the back steps was the
A major conflict in this novel is between the greasers and the Socs. These two gangs are made up of complete opposites. The two rivals fall into conflict because of how they view each other and their roles in society. Greasers are poor hoods from the East side that “wear our hair long and dress in t-shirts and blue jeans… and wear leather jackets
Greasers are the main stereotype in the book but also there is a small part played by the Socs. Although the book is about the life and times of a Greaser there is also a ‘Socs Story’ in there, as throughout the book you learn more and more about the Socs and how they live. But this all changes. When Bob dies Cherry and Randy, the main Socs characters, begin to see that there is no difference between Socs and Greasers. Randy, when he talks to Ponyboy in private doesn’t call
As stated in the text, Hinton writes “Things were rough all over”(Hinton 35). This explains that everyone has problems no matter who you are or where you came from, everyone has issues no matter how big or small. Therefore, Greasers and Socs are very much alike. In addition, the article “The Allure of Gangs” clarifies that “Being in a gang may also satisfy their need for attention and provide someone who will listen to and care about them”(“The Allure of Gangs” on page 40). Given that, majority of the kids that are in the gangs, come from difficult homes, so they tend to be closer to their gang members than their family
The difference between the Greasers and Socs in the society is the Greasers treated unequally and criticized for being poor. The Socs are bullying, criticizing, and intimidating the Greasers based on the economic level. Greasers have unequal lifestyles, attitudes, and financial situations, but still live in the same world, beneath the same sun as the Socs (Hinton 18), but repeat the same actions toward the Socs in a way of fighting back and sticking together.
First, the socs and the greasers didn't have much in common the socs made gangs because they were bored on the other hand greasers made gangs fight back at the socs. The socs would usually jump the greasers because they wanted to have some fun and pick on some kids then greasers would only fight for fun when is would be for fun they had dignity.Though the greasers didn't want to engage fights just for the heck of is they enjoyed fights all around just as much as the socs did.The socs and greasers both had one problem is school most greasers would drop out of school to make money for their families but the greasers would usually stay in school because their parents already make a lot of money.Though the greasers and socs do come from a different
A greaser is a hood and they are middle class youth.A Soc is a rich youth and they are the ones jump us and throw beer cans everywhere.A Greaser usually live in on the East side on the town and the soc live on the West Side of the town.A Greaser wears black leather jacket, greased comb back hair, and they wear jeans.A soc wear
The Socs have it harder than the Greasers because a Greaser actually killed a member of the group. This quote was found on page 56 of the book. “I killed that boy.” Yes , Johnny did kill that boy ,but that boy was drowning Ponyboy and he saved Ponyboy’s life. Johnny had no other way. Bob was drowning Ponyboy and Ponyboy was almost dead if Johnny did what he did to save his friend’s life .This next quote would be found on page 34-35 of the book .“Cherry had said her friend was too cool to feel anything and yet she could remember watching sunsets. Cherry’s friend can feel something . Her friend did feel something when Bob was killed .The Socs think that they have hard when someone is killed by your opponent. When two people in your group are killed or died of injuries and those two people was part of a family to the some of the of Greaser. When someone dies
Each of the gangs have an ongoing rivalry, and it doesn’t allow Socs to be friends with or friendly towards Greasers, and vice versa. It’s the way it’s always been, and it gives people on each side a very close-minded point of view towards the other side. “Not like the Socs, who jump greasers
The Greasers and the Socs are alike because they both go to Drive-Ins, both fight, and both gangs carry switchblades. They are different because the Socs have more money, nicer cars and clothes, and they also jump people such as the Greasers.
