Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup is an autobiography that revolves around the author’s life in the 1840’s as an African-American slave, and it is told in his own words after his rescue. Northup was born in Minerva, New York City in the year 1808 on July 10th. Solomon Northup grew up a free man on a farm with his father, mother, and older brother Joseph. As a child he would help on the farm, as well as, reading books and playing the violin. Throughout his childhood, Northup had always known the feeling of freedom; before he was born his father, Mitus, was enslaved to a man, but then released upon the death of the gentlemen. After his marriage he had become deprived of working on the farm and so he decided to go into the industry; his first industrial job was working on the Champlain Canal. From the day he was born to his early thirties, Northup’s life was filled with love and hope as a free man. He was living a humble life with a family of five, but all those good memories were soon washed away and replaced with sorrow and despair in the years 1841 to 1853. Throughout Northup’s story he highlights the atrocious experiences he faced when he became a slave. Northup begins his autobiography by sharing with readers his life as a free African-American man. He grew up on a farm with a father who was an emancipated slave, a mother, and an elder brother. Throughout his childhood he was taught to work hard, be humble, and kind.
