I am here at the moment to claim the title of tragic hero in the play Antigone Author by Sophocles. I would like to start off by saying that it will be very challenging for me to have the passion that I usually have. But I will still stand in front of you. As I said before I am here to argue the title of tragic hero in the play Antigone. I could see that some of you are confused by the word "tragic hero". No need to concern for I will tell you. The great Aristotle was one of the earliest men who defined a tragic hero. His description is not an instruction for what tragedy should be, but it is an explanation of what he thought tragedy was. According to Aristotle a tragic hero must have these potentials to qualify as one.
An Aristotelian tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment that ultimately leads to his or her own destruction. An example of a true Aristotelian tragic hero is Creon from Sophocles’ play, Antigone. Creon is the tragic hero because he goes through the five stages of a tragic hero which leads to his destruction. His tragic flaw is him being afraid to admit that he has made a mistake. He is too proud of his power and his ability to make laws which leads to his son and wife committing suicide. The similar approach, in Woman at Point Zero, Cooke’s remarks about Firdaus being a tragic hero is true. Firdaus demonstrates to be a tragic hero through the five characteristics for the tragic hero.
This story depicts about securing moral rights by defying the law of land. Antigone is a lady who goes against law for last rites of her brother. The new king buries one of them with full rituals and dignity whereas other is declared to be traitor and as a punishment to him he is to be left on the plain outside the city to rot and get eaten by animals. Antigone finds it to be against humanity against the right of a martyr. She determines it to be against god. Therefore she goes against the order passed by the king and as a responsible sister she buries the body of her brother by herself. It shows Antigone believed in justice for her brother and thereafter she defies all the circumstances to give an honorable burial to her brother. It shows that the lady was brave and fought for the justice irrespective of the law of land.
Being a human incorporates drama. It is part of living in society, and often inevitable. In theatre, successful drama plays use timeless issues that can still be found present in most civilization. Amongst the seven Sophocles’ plays that managed to survive 25 centuries in complete form, lies one of the most famous tragedies in human-history, Antigone. The main controversial conflict in this historically-influential play is the importance of divine law versus man-made state laws. These are presented through the characters Antigone and Creon, respectively. According to Aristotle, a tragedy is defined as: “A hero destroyed by the excess of his virtues”. The dictionary definition of the word hero is “a person noted
The story in Antigone shows two things that Sophocles could be pointing which is important whether may be the family or authority. Readers could not tell whether Sophocles would be choosing which but most conclude that Sophocles could be siding with family as it talks much more about it than authority. In the mind of a reader, family is mostly likely the winner as Antigone cares her brother Polyneices, Antigone denies the rule of Creon, Creon values his son and his wife, and Sophocles might be making a point when he made family important in Antigone.
When one person thinks about the word suffering a lot of emotions and meanings can all flow in at once. It is a word that not many people want to talk about let alone feel it. However it is a truly amazing emotion; to suffer. That word can mean so many different things to so many different people. It is up to that one person to make a choice and define that word for themselves. The reason as to why one must define the word themselves is because it is a personal emotion. One person cannot tell another that they are suffering or that the event that has just occurred made them suffer. Unfortunately this feeling does occur quite often but in many different scenarios. For example in Sophocles’ play Antigone there are a few characters that one might say suffered. The two characters that are believed to suffer the most in this play are Antigone and Creon, however Creon does suffer more than Antigone.
Antigone explores the theme of “poetic justice” by the fate of the characters, as most of them are dead because of suicide. Throughout the course of the play, Creon battles with Antigone over whether or not Polynices’ should have the right to be buried. The moral values of this tragedy suggests that holy law triumphs over mortal law, excessive pride is a fatal flaw,
Learning how to improve from one’s failures and being able to repent for them is a crucial characteristic of Greek tragedies. The idea of hamartia or tragic flaw is a predominant motif that can be seen throughout many works from the Ancient Greek time period. Hamartia means to “miss the mark” (Merriam-Webster) and is often what leads to the demise of the tragic hero. In the play Antigone by Sophocles, this proves to be true (comma or this idea proves to be true) as the tragic flaw of hubris leads to the downfall of two central characters. Hubris is known as a sense of great pride and through Antigone, Creon and Antigone are shown to be strong-willed characters that both—though in different ways—suffer from hubris. Sophocles is able to clearly illustrate how pride, though sometimes constructive, can lead to an individual’s undoing in excessive amounts. Evidence of this is shown through the events leading up to Antigone’s death and when Creon reaches an epiphany about his wrong-doings.
She is noble yet imperfect because she is born into a family of royalty, but ending up going against the king and the law. She is flawed because of her stubbornness and pride by thinking she is great enough to defy the king’s proclamation. Her reversal of fate is when she becomes sentenced to death and she understands her misfortune is a result of her action, because she decides she wants to die in a way honorable to her. Finally, she receives punishment far greater than she deserves when she dies by hanging herself after being exiled away. In the play Antigone, by Sophocles, Antigone is the tragic hero because of all the ways she presents, in her plans, desires, thoughts, and actions, the themes of one, loyalty should be given to loved ones no matter what, and two even when someone is not deserving of a punishment. because they have done nothing wrong to be able to fight through the challenges. Through her presentation as a tragic hero, Antigone is like the wise man because she lives her life displaying “the strength of a family, like an army, is in its loyalty to each
