Once said by Albert Einstein “Two things inspire to awe - The starry heavens above and the moral universe within”. Space has fascinated people around the world wondering and asking questions like are we ever going to explore beyond our planet and even the solar system, or what new technologies are going to be made from space exploration, what benefits have we already seen from space exploration, and countless more. Society has benefited significantly from space exploration and all the new advancements, innovation and new ideas it has brought us. the beneficial effects that the economic, social, and health aspects of the society sees from space exploration proves we have a definite need to continue funding for future space research because of …show more content…
From the technology developed for space rockets evolved into beneficial technology for firefighters and emergency personnel. The innovation of fire protection technology has enabled emergency personnel to go into a dangerous situations and save those who are trapped. From these innovations made, the society was affected and changed to be a more safer place with less to worry about. A very beneficial breakthrough that NASA has created is water purification. “Commercially, this system is benefiting people all over the world who need affordable, clean water” (NASA Technologies Benefit Our Lives” 4). This is making water that is scarce in countries more common making dirty water into clean drinkable water. Through interest and exploration of space, society has learned more about their place in the universe and the new knowledge gained has benefitted the society greatly. It has been said, “Humanity’s interest in the heavens has been universal and enduring. Humans are driven to explore the unknown, discover new worlds, push the boundaries of our scientific and technical limits, and then push farther” (“NASA- Why We Explore” 1). It has always been an interest to many that live on the earth to …show more content…
Unable to be in full health whether be sick with a disease/ sickness or with a disability, can result in a poor quality life. New methods of curing diseases and new medicine techniques have already been made from space exploration and more breakthroughs are occurring benefiting the aesthetic part of society. Health and medicine have extensive impacts on the lives of everyone and research done by NASA and other space companies could improve the medicine and health we currently have. “Even as you read these words, there’s a world of research going on high over our heads- approximately 200-215 miles up. The international space station (ISS), which has been taking shape for much of the past decade, is an orbiting laboratory for many types of research” (“Space The New Medical Frontier”). Medical research has been going on in space since man has step foot into the atmosphere. The results of the on going research has brought the society new, better, more advanced medical field in which bring us a better healthier life. Currently, research has been ongoing for a few months and is going to continue for an entire year. This experiment, called the twin study, is going to see the effects of being in space for long periods of time. The twins Mark and Scott Kelly are going to be studied for the differences in molecular,
Many critics believe that NASA and space exploration should not be the main focus of the government. However, NASA is not just about flying rockets and putting men into space. There is science and engineering that is being developed to push humanity forward in life. This space program is essential to answering philosophical questions, creating new technology for practical everyday use, the international collaboration with other countries, and the long-term survival of the human
Space exploration is a subject of much debate in regards to its funding. There has always been a divide in opinions on space exploration. Many people, usually engineers or those in the field of science, have been in favor of space exploration and the innovations it could bring. Other people, such as politicians and businessmen, see space exploration as a waste of funding that does not result in profit or benefits. However, aerospace engineers are currently planning several space programs that could bring many benefits to the United States. Investing in space exploration will benefit the U.S. in the future by contributing knowledge, providing resources, and possibly finding another habitable planet.
How would you like to explore a never-ending frontier filled with endless potential and possible benefits for humankind? When put this way, space exploration sounds like an enticing adventure. However, is it all that it’s chalked up to be? We’re here to answer that question. There’s a specific issue that we need to consider when referring to space exploration; should we continue to fund NASA? We acknowledge that some people may already have strong opinions on this, and we ask you to keep an open mind and try to avoid bias. After all, we’re discussing our future.
Some people’s counterarguments saying that it’s pointless and it provides no benefits to us shows that there is a lack of knowledge about space exploration among most people .The ‘Space Race’ i.e. the competition to travel to the moon, was the first political issue that actually became a rivalry between countries. Everybody seems to forget that if we weren’t able to go to space, we wouldn’t have discovered traces of water on other planets such as mars- On the 9th of December 2013; NASA reported that there was once a freshwater lake on the surface of Mars, and there are still traces of water in its atmosphere. This ultimately means that there could possibly be habitable planets in our universe, in our solar system! This could provide a place to go if there in any supernatural disaster, like an earthquake, tsunami or even an asteroid as
For all of humankind’s existence, people have gazed at the cosmos in wonderment, trying to wrap their minds around the complexities of the universe. Scientist and researchers are on the brink of finally being able to learn about the way the universe works. It has only been in the past few decades where researchers have been able to use current technology to efficiently collect information and process it. There have been many achievements that are due to the work in space science. NASA has contributed to creating many technologies such as ventricular assist devices, artificial limbs, anti-icing systems, video enhancing and analysis systems, to even enriched baby food. NASA has led to various ways of improvement in society with their work in space exploration. The technological advancements are in addition to the main goal of space exploration, which is to gain a better understanding of the fundamental laws of space. There needs to be an increase in funding for NASA so they can conduct research to understand Earth as well as the rest of the celestial bodies in space. By comprehending the objects in space, they can be utilized. Mining asteroids could lead to a new-found source of material that could provide resources that are not easily accessible. Their research helps in exploring space, working towards the point of traversing space to inhabit other worlds. People generally have favorable opinions of NASA and their research but think that too much money is spent in that field.
While many people support funding NASA and agree with the organization’s goals, there a good number of people who do not. A common reason for this is that they believe that the space program should focus on discovering things that can benefit us immediately, not in the future. This is a valid argument because there
The concept of space exploration was first introduced to the American public in 1961 when President John F. Kennedy famously stood before congress and vowed that America would put a man on the moon “within the decade.” With hopes of defeating the Soviet Union in the “Space Race” and gaining a leg-up in the Cold War, NASA funding reached its all-time high in 1965-1966 when about four percent of the federal budget was devoted to exploring space. Since then however, funding dedicated to exploring space has nose-dived to about one-half of a percent of the federal budget (Tyson), with plans to cut that figure by an additional $260 million in 2017 (cite NASA funding cuts). Experts in the space-sciences field argue that increased funding in space exploration would re-ignite the American economy and return America to the scientific prominence it was once known for, while, on the other end of the spectrum, naysayers suggest that exploring space is an economic sink-hole that the United States can no longer afford to deposit to given its own earth-bound troubles.
Space exploration funding has been drastically reduced since the conclusion of the Space Race. Even though the Space Race is no longer relevant, it has positively affected human civilization, and we should continue to invest in space exploration to continue this trend. The first and primary reason we should continue to work with space is to aid industries on earth. Most notable is the use of satellites for purposes such as commercial communications, the GPS system, and meteorology. The second reason is because humans have an inherent hunger for knowledge, and space funding helps us develop technology for seeing what’s beyond earth. Space probes such as New Horizons and telescopes such as the James Webb Telescope have expanded our knowledge
But American presence in space is not just a power play; the scientific and technological benefits of space exploration remain its most invaluable quality. In the past, space initiatives have yielded countless meteorological benefits, including the prediction and management of hurricanes and other natural disasters. Surveillance, mass banking and communication, military intelligence, and environmental studies are all areas expanded through American space presence (Dubner n.p.). Not to mention the medical advances: Joan Vernikos, a member of the Space Studies Board of the National Academy and former director of NASA’s Life Sciences Division, notes, “Studying humans living in the microgravity of space has expanded our understanding of osteoporosis and balance disorders, and has led to new treatments” (Dubner 13). Space travel has also aided in the invention of medical technology. The beneficiaries of instrumentation such as digital mammography, outpatient breast biopsy procedures, and the application of telemedicine to emergency care can thank manned space missions for their current implementation. For every dollar we spend on the space program, the U.S. economy receives about $8 of economic benefit, according to Hubbard, who also believes space travel “serves as a stimulus for children to enter the fields of science and engineering” (Dubner).
Space technology has helped better our society in technological and inspirational ways. The majority of NASA’s technology has helped improve fields such as medical, transportation,
We should keep on funding space research for exploration because there can be many new things that we can discover that can impact us all greatly. In “Why we Shouldn’t Go to Mars” by Gregg Easterbrook, “Remarks at the Dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center” by John F. Kennedy and Political Cartoon it is evident that we should continue investing and funding the space programs for more exploration to discover new things. There are many decisions and choices
Do you ever wonder where our knowledge about space comes from? Or where some of our necessities comes from? Space programs, like the National Aeronautics and Space Association, or commonly known as NASA, help us learn about space. Also, they aid us in creating innovative inventions with materials derived from space. To be able to continue growth, space programs must be funded by our government. With research, it can be said that space programs being funded by the government is important because we can advance in science, maintain jobs and infer about the future.
One reason space exploration is worth the cost is it creates many new and useful technologies that can benefit Earth. Some of the innovations that space have provided are G.P.S, natural disaster predictions, cell phones, and television. All of these luxuries have become part of most American’s everyday lives, and if we continue to explore as desired by the human spirit, more technology can be created for society to use. Medical technology
Mankind has always been fascinated with exploring the unknown. From sailing to distant lands to someday setting foot on other planets, the spirit of exploration is the same. Bur now with the current economic situation and the high cost of sending people to space, NASA is being looked at as a way to free up some much needed funds. Although, there is many problems here on planet Earth that need addressing, the benefits of space exploration far out weight the disadvantages. Space exploration has given us more advanced technology, advances in the medical field, and a boost to the economy and these facts cannot be disputed.
Humans have always been interested in space and the wonder in which it may hold. In the past, humans worshiped the stars as if they were gods while also studying their position to give them guidance for their lives. Their interested in space has fathered the desire to know more. Today, space has been seen by many as the new frontier or the home beyond earth. Society have even taken a step forward through the creation of stories in books and movies based of the idea of humans living in space and the present of alliances. Yet there is still controversy on the need to continue space exploration when our own planet has so many detrimental problems. There is an ongoing debate on whether not the money used for space travel could be better beneficially use for other causes. It is true that space exploration costs billions of dollars a year alone according to NASA current budget, which is constantly increasing. However, what many refuses to understand is that without space exploration many of the innovations that we have today would not have existed. While there have been, many failed attempts involving space exploration that has caused a tremendous amount of money to go down the drain. However, many people fail to realize the benefits of space exploration and the possible future it may
