Space Race Research Paper

Well before Russia thought about launching Sputnik into space, there had been quite a bit of tension between America and the Soviet Union. The two countries had been allies in World War II, but they had a very tense relationship with one another. Americans were leery with the communist government that the Soviets had and their leader, Joseph Stalin. The Soviets despised the fact that America refused to acknowledge the USSR as an actual international society. With this being said, by the time World War II was ended and over with, each country’s hatred grew creating an overpowering sense of spite and belligerence. Therefore, these tensions led to the start of the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union. The Cold War was an atomic age, meaning that the two countries developed and tested atomic weapons like the ones used during World War II, which forged stakes that were severely high. The Cold War led to advancements in not only atomic weapons or just weapons in general, but advancements in technology, which we see with the launch of Sputnik.

The Space Race was invoked by the growing technologies of the United States and Soviet Union’s space programs during the Cold War. The starting point of the Space Race was the launch of Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union. The Space Race has impacted society greatly politcally, socially, and economically. The Space Race was a very tense period of time in history because both the United States and Soviet Union improved their technology to such a degree that the two countries have both made it to space multiple times.

The Cold War was the rivalry between the two superpowers of the world, The United States and the Soviet Union, this war lasted about 45 years and fought each other indirectly for power and control of the world. This battle began towards the end of the World War II in 1945, the United States and the Soviet Union started noticing their differences and this caused conflict between them.This war was unlike other wars, there was no fighter planes flying over countries dropping bombs, no ground troops,and no deployment of missiles, however there was nuclear weapons being used,plenty of money being spent,propaganda and two powerful enemies against each other like other wars. How did the Space race improve society with their advanced technology? We know they had advanced in technology that wasn't here 50 years ago, but, how did technology built for space go in our everyday lives? One of the most obvious technologies that we created was Satellite Tv, this is one of the tech breakthroughs that we couldn't think of a life without to keep us entertained. The same goes for computers and laptops. The Space Race made satellites a possibility when they were used to communicate with astronauts before soon they made satellite dishes. NASA invented many pieces of technology that both benefited them in space and people at home watching TV, playing on their video games and even where I'm typing this on... the computer.

The space race was a race to see who could do more and get more done in space. It was done against the U.S and the USSR. The USSR was the first to make something orbit the Earth that was the spacecraft Sputnik I. In 1957 USSR launch the Sputnik I it took 98 minutes to make its orbit. It spend 21 days in space before it burned up in the atmosphere. The USSR later launched Sputnik II. It carried the first living thing in space a dog named Laika.The US was going crazy on how Russia has passed them in technology. Almost two years later the US made the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The USSR kept on making successful launches in may 1958 they launch Sputnik III which carried 2 thousand pounds to space. In April 1961 the USSR launched the Vostok I it had the first man to orbit the Earth his name was Yuri Gagarin. A month later the US had the first American to go to space his name was Alan Shepard.

Throughout the twentieth century, space exploration and advancements allowed for the American dream to come to life. The space race, first man on the moon, and other space missions not only helped establish America’s opposing world power, but also acknowledged the fact that the United States encouraged its citizen and gave them a dream to aspire to as a nation. Space exploration achieved the American dream as the United States became a dominant world power and discovered new hopes for knowledge and peace which is emphasized by astronaut Neil Armstrong, President John F. Kennedy, and the first moon landing in 1969.

“Now is the time...for this nation to take a clearly leading role in space achievement, which in many ways may hold the key to our future on Earth.” This quote from John F. Kennedy expresses his belief on the future impact that the space race will have on Earth, and now we can see that his prediction was correct. Although, his prediction is not the only effect of the space race on the rest of humanity. The demand for space exploration has grown and evolved from the Space Race, which in turn has also sparked new advances in multiple fields of science and changed our society now and in the future.

During the what is considered to be the most heated section of the Space Race during 1960s, it was a NASA Administrator named James Webb who held fast, determined and calling upon all his skills, he went on to push the U.S. rocket program past seemingly never ending political barriers, far beyond the outstretched hands of jealous rivals, and forward on to success. James Edwin Webb was only the second administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, established semi-recently in 1958. NASA was created with the idea that the United States could develop a state-of-the-art space exploration program that would go on to outdo, and unravel the Soviet Union's program. I created this piece to further elaborate on the book’s main premise of the lack of support for our space program in our current age. Before I touch on that we have to touch on our origins. We as a race have lived as pioneers exploring the earth and colonizing any new place we could find. It all started in the fertile crest in the middle east. They ventured forth and spread across the earth. Then came the period of stagnation where no exploration was happening and the space race started. We went back to our roots as pioneers exploring beyond the bounds of our small blue planet. America as a whole was the economic powerhouse of the age and the space race caused our education standards to be raised as a whole leading to a greater nation. However,

During the space race, both the US and the Soviet Union achieved a lot. Some say the US won the race because it landed the first human on the Moon but no one can take anything away from the USSR. Soviet accomplished a lot and had more “firsts” then the US until the US caught up. Both the US and the USSR won the space race.

The Cold War space race was a race between the US and the soviet union, to be the first country to face a reliable way to get into space. The first country to get something into space was the Soviet union when they got Sputnik into orbit. In 1957 the Soviet’s surprised the world with its first venture into space. The sputnik satellite had circled the world for only 21 days, but had forever changed the political landscape of the Cold War. This new front of the Cold War that would drive both the United States and the Soviet Union to be the first country to send a man in space. In 1961, The Soviets answer this challenge and claim victory by sending the first man into space. The Cold war dated from 1947-1991. It was characterized by both political and military superiority between United States, which was backed by its NATO allies, and Soviet Union that led the communist side. The cold war was mainly started after the success of the alliance that was formed against Nazi Germany. This competition supremacy on nuclear warfare attracted other countries that also started making nuclear weapons due to the tension that existed in the world. Both sides directed huge sums of money to their military budgets with each side trying to outdo the other.

A great portion of the space race is in direct correlation with military advantages rockets provided during the Cold War.
