The Spanish American (1898) was a problem between the United States and Spain. It had ended Spanish colonial rule in America. It also had resulted to U.S acquisition of territories in the western Pacific and Latin America. In the end of the of the 19th century the United States and Spain fought over colonies and territories. It was a military clash between two countries competing for expanding their country. The Spanish-American War was known as the beginning process to the United States establishing itself as a world super power. This would be the beginning to becoming a strong and powerful Empire. This process to building a powerful Empire is something that America has built up for hundreds of years.
The Spanish-American War began as a humanitarian effort to free Cuba from Spain’s colonial grasp and ended with the United States itself acquiring territory overseas and fighting a dirty guerrilla war with Filipino nationalists who, like the Cubans, sought independence. Behind the contradiction stood the twin pillars of American foreign policy: The Monroe Doctrine made Spain’s presence in Cuba unacceptable, and U.S. determination to keep open the door to Asia made the Philippines attractive as a stepping-stone to China.

The American people sided more towards the Cubans then with Spain within during the war. There was a big difference between the Cubans and the Spanish people. The Cubans were very poor people who did have much, while the Spanish controlled everything and had everything. This upsetted many people from the poor to the rich, and the Spanish just wanted to do what was right. The War with Spain was ultimately suppose to help the other people and the government. And this War with Spain started to include the Blacks which was gonna end up making things more peaceful and an “era of good feelings”. All Spain wanted was a perfect sound of unity among the people around them without the issues of racism, etc. (document 1) As a step to fix this, the American government try to adopt a policy of neutrality to help with this issue. The Americans reached out for help, but got little in return. McKinley just wanted to help the Philippines. They were unfit for self-government as I said above, and soon as time went on, they would have an “anarchy” and would soon be misruled for so many things. According to Document 3, McKinley just wanted the Philippines to be involved in the church and one night after speaking to God, he figured it all out. He decided that all he could do was to educate them and to provide them with everything he possibly could. The United States expanded its territory on the North American continent in the 1840s and then expanded its territory overseas between 1890 and 1917. These periods of expansion had positive and negative effects on the United States and on other peoples. During Andrew Jackson’s presidency, he purchased Louisiana territory from the French for $15 million. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States allowing the space needed for expansion and settlement. The Manifest Destiny-a doctrine that stated the U.S had the divine right to own the entirety of North American territory-encouraged westward expansion along with the technological advances brought by the Industrial revolution(Document 1).
The Spanish back then were a “hungry for land” type of country. They would take any land that they could get their hands on and then fight for it. The Spanish made a bold move and conquered Florida from Great Britain. Then the Spanish split Florida into two colonies, East Florida and West Florida. What didn’t help was that the Americans controlled the land right next to Florida, and they were planning on taking Florida, that lead to conflict between the countries.
The Spanish war gave the United States an empire. At the end of the Spanish war the United States took Spanish colonies such as Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and many other islands. The creation of the American Empire leads to the end of the Spanish Empire. The United States wanted to build up the countries so that markets would open up and purchase American goods and to improve the American economy.
