Spanish Conquest of the New World According to Walbert, Europeans had not known that North and South America had existed in 1400s. The Spanish believed that since they were superior to those who had lost in battle, they had the right to enslave the defeated (Walbert). Christopher Columbus, a well-known voyager, known for ‘’discovering America’’ During this time of discovery, the Spanish had set their sights on this new world. As stated by Walbert, the Spanish relied on their weaponry and their dominating attitude, not to mention the most deadly of them all; disease. As reported by Koster (2017) about 17,200 were killed due to smallpox in 1837-1838. In comparison to the Europeans, the Native Americans were very prone to disease (Koster, 2017). Walbert (n/d) stated that this disease was common in Europe and Asia, therefore, the residents of these regions slowly grew immune to this disease. But when the Europeans came to this ’new land’, which is now known as America, the disease killed those who lived there, the Natives. The Europeans, as well as the Spanish felt as if they could not defeat the Natives any other way, so they resorted to scheming tricks ;disease in blankets. As the disease spread to the Natives, their population began to diminish, thus, they began to enslave people from Africa.
