What would you do if the person you care the most about was suffering from depression? In Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the narrator, Melinda Sordino, suffers from depression and insecurity after being molested by a senior, Andy Evans. Over time, her emotions change positively. In her art class, she was assigned trees as her project to express emotion. In this novel, trees speak for her because they represent her life, growth, and her refusal to speak.

Following a rape, a victim may face violence or threats thereof from the rapist, and, in some cases from the victim's own family and relatives. This article studies the way criminal rapists rationalize their cruel behavior. Scully and Marolla bring to attention that rapists will rationalize and find some kind of justification or excuse for their deviant behaviors. Rape seems to be viewed as a psychopathologic problem, and the rapists are looked at as vile. The bases of their arguments and conclusions are found within interviews focusing on the hard-core rapist population that is sentenced to prison time.

The lesson I received from this book was that a person’s actions can affect others’ self-esteem and life. In this novel, the main characters are Hannah Baker and Clay Jensen. Hannah was a new student at high school, after encountering several experiences, rumors spread about her. Later, she then started to feel depressed and committed suicide because of the way people treated her. Hannah left a set of 13 tapes explaining the 13 reasons why she ended her life. Clay Jensen, receives these tapes but is not sure why (pg.5). After, finding out that he is in one of the tapes, Clay is eager and desperate to find out what he did wrong to make Hannah commit suicide.He listens to them, and the whole picture of Hannah’s drama-filled life unfolds. As I said before, the lesson I learnt was that your actions can affect a person’s life. The thirteen people in this book that hurt Hannah's feelings and made her feel worthless, which changed how she saw herself and the way she felt about herself.

Speak is a cleaver and an ironic title for a story in which the main character chooses not to speak. The story is written in first-person narration from the point of view of protagonist, Melinda Sordino. Speak is written like an interior monologue in the mind of an introverted teenage girl, like excerpts from her personal diary during her miserable freshman year of high school. It is a common myth that there is a type of woman that is more likely to be raped. This is indeed a myth, most of the time rape is a crime of opportunity, the victim is not chosen because of her looks or behavior, but because she is there (Benedict 2). The average rape victim is 18-39 years old and female, the average rapist is 25 years old and male. The effect of rape on a woman is an enormous one. The woman will come away from a rape with both physical and psychological damage. Eventually the physical wounds will heal, the psychological wounds will take quite some time before or if they ever heal (Grady 4). She is too drunk to defend herself. Afterward Melinda deals 911 and the police arrive at the party, but Melinda is unable to confess what happened. When the entire school knows that Melinda was the one who called the police, everyone, including her friends, stopped speaking to her. No one knew the real reason behind the 9-11 call. As Alice was going through major hell during the rape and even after the rape, it seemed as it was not taken seriously by others. Alice describes her pain, fears, and many problems that came along the way when it came for fighting for herself and the after effect of the rape. Being a rape victim was not easy, and Alice showed many signals that she needed more than just comfort, but sadly many of them failed to provide that for her.

Patricia Lockwood’s The Rape Joke is a risky composition- not because it discloses information about Lockwood’s personal rape experience, but because it does so from a comedic stance, ridiculing the unfortunate event and the events leading up to and after it. While the creation of the poem was prompted due to the sexual assault she experienced, the content and subject are not centered around the incident or the assaulter but around rape culture and the sociological concept of victim blaming, from both society and oneself. There is no such thing as a rape joke-the joke is the incredulous ways society has guided people to respond to it.
