Technology is continuing to become better and better. The world of the internet net has brought information to a large chunk of the world and smartphones bring that information to our fingertips. Information can be easily accessed in seconds by most people in the United States if so desired. With this access or information, however, it brings up the question if technology is making students smarter or dumber. Or does having technology like spell check/autocorrect makes a person bad at spelling? Smartphones have changed the world we live for the better or for the worse. I would guess that most college students have a smart phone or a laptop they use every day. Either the smart phone or laptop have some sort of spell check or auto correction which, I believe, can make one worse at spelling over time. One no longer needs to know how to spell a word letter to letter. They just have to get approximately to how the word is spelled and the smartphone or laptop will do the rest of the work and correct the misspelled word. …show more content…
According to the Huffington Post there are multiple effect that smartphone use has on all of us. Some of the effect are: People forget how to talk, smartphones affect our sleep, people can’t focus, people die at the hands of texting, or people’s I identities is defined by their smartphone. If these effect are considered to make a person ‘dumber’, then the internet and smartphones makes students dumber. This does not just effect students but everyone who owns a smartphone and has access to
Another point as to why I believe smartphones may be hurting us is through my own personal experiences that align with the statistics Twinge wrote about. In the article Twinge states “parents may be inclined to encourage their kids to stay home and study rather than to
Besides the cell phone, does technology really affect us in our society? Today’s generation of teenagers are using smartphones much of the time. Researchers also found that many teenagers are using more smartphones. This constant use of technology has had negative effects on today’s youth. Constant use of technology by teenagers is harmful because it causes depression and affects education
Studies have found that as the phone use increases, your attention goes elsewhere, “revealing that the more heavily student relied on their phones in their everyday lives, the greater the cognitive penalty they suffered” (Carr 3). The more focus a cell phone receives the more a person will suffer mentally. At UCSD around 520 students were given two standardized tests of intellectual acuity. “The only variable in the experiment was the location of the subjects’ smartphones. Some of the students.. place their phones in front of them on their desks; others were told to stow their phones in their pockets.. others were required to leave their phones in a different room” (Carr 3). The results from this study were conspicuous. It’s self-evident that anyone with phone insight had worst scores than those who didn't have their phones at all or had them in their pockets. Technology has take over us and it is draining our
Smartphones have made enormous impacts on the entire planet, some of those impacts were good, others were not. Many adults today see smartphones as something that has crippled teenagers around the world, while the younger generation thinks otherwise. In my opinion, smartphones have done more harm than people realize. Smartphones could be harming children in their abilities to obtain a proper education and to make proper decisions.
The uses of technology like computers and cell phones are growing every day with new uses and forms. There are mixed feelings about if technology is making us smarter or stupider thru out day to day life. Nicolas Carr a New York Times writer wrote an article about “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and he tries to show people that computers are making our lives simpler and there for making us as humans stupid. Another writher that goes by the name Greg is a writer for digitaltonto.com, and he found the previous article and wrote “How Computers Change the Way We learn” which is about how all lot of the facts in Carr article could have been read to say anything that the author wanted, so he could make people believe.
Students aren’t making nearly as many spelling mistakes due to spellcheck but are now using the wrong word or preposition in their writing. Stanford researcher Andrea Lunsford creates an interesting point when she asks if students are losing the taste for more complex English. This is something we don’t want to lose the ability to do.
Technology has opened many opportunities for students, but is it taking a toll on their education? Based on the two articles the “Avid Weekly: When it is and isn’t OK to be on your smartphone: the conclusive guide” by Caitlin Dewey and Is Technology Killing Our Friendship By Lauren Tarshis, technology can have a lasting effect that can either be positive or negative. Technology has let the world stay in touch with what’s happening around them, which has positively affected students and their surroundings. Causing disruptions though is something not to be happy about, because if technology advances in classrooms, students can easily be picked off into the wonders of technology. Although technology has helped students prosper, there are still
Technology seems to be the topic for debate these days. Is it making a positive or negative impact on humans? Another question, are computers smarter than us humans is the real question? In the reading, Is Google making us Stupid? by Nicholas Carr this author seems to states that the internet/technology affects many different areas in our lives and not positively, such as: cognition, reading skills, etc. with many reasonable explanations to support his theory. Yes, technology has made our lives easier and convenient, but are we becoming spoiled with computers? If that is even possible.
Technology is enhancing our knowledge, not making us dumber. In source 2, science columnist Sharon Begley explains how technology does not negatively affect the youths intelligence. Begley addressed that “There is no empirical evidence that being immersed in instant messaging, texting, iPods, video games, and all things online impairs
In accordance with the article, “Are Smartphones Making Us Stupid?”, I believe that smartphones are not making us stupid. First of all, smartphones help us to acquire more knowledge and information. The article states, “The fact that we can ask a question and get an answer, wherever we are, means that our discussions can get past disputes over facts so that we can talk about the real issues; what we make of the facts.” Often times in an argument, people fight over basic facts instead of the real issues. With a smartphone, you are one Google search away from those facts, and then you can form an opinion and argue like a champion. That’s pretty smart if you ask me. In addition, the author states, “Because these devices are always with us, we
Is the internet making us smarter or dumber? People continuously argue whether this rise of electronic use and internet in our lives is a negative or positive aspect. In June 5, 2010 Wall Street Journal article, Nicholas Carr raises and answer the intriguing question,“Does the Internet Make You Dumber?”Nicholas Carr argues that the internet has bad effects on our brain. He says that the internet makes it harder to remember anything, and that is harder to move memories into long term memory. Those who are continually distracted by emails, alerts, and text messages understand less than a person who can concentrate. Nicholas Carr points that the internet can change the way our brain acts. He states that those who use the internet are shallow, and the internet is causing irreversible damage to our thought processes and making us stupid. A week later, Steven Pinker counters Nicholas Carr’s assertions in his own New York Time article,“Mind Over Mass Media.”He argues that electronic technologies are not as horrible as some may make it seem, and he starts his article by addressing how“New forms of media have always caused moral panics”(199). Throughout his article, Pinker explains why critics, who accuse electronic technology as harming to human intelligence, are wrong. He suggests that,“these technologies are the only things that will keep us smart”(200). Through media and social networking, the internet brings people closer together and provides convenience for people’s life.
For years smart phones has given us access to the Internet a vast place to quickly find information on any subject imaginable. It seems like a never -ending digital book of information. With the click of a button it can take mere seconds to find information that would have taken hours to find in an encyclopedia or a dictionary. As easy as the Internet makes it to find information, there are still a few people who are concerned that it has affected their ability to focus on information as a whole. The question at hand is, Are Smart Phones Making Us Stupid?
Technology has made a big difference in our society such as communication, work, education, and entertainment in good and bad ways. Some people say that technology has made life better with the internet, cell phones and other devices. While others say technology has been making life worse because people are becoming lazy and replace their lives with technology every day. Technology surrounds almost everyone in modern society and it affects our lives in many ways.
Smartphones are used every day around the world and nearly sixty-four percent of Americans own one. Smartphones and their impact on the human brain is a question of controversy. Do smartphones really indeed make us dumber? Phones may be part of our everyday lives, but they certainly are not making us dumber in society. Phones make us more educated and keep us more informed of our surroundings. They also allow us to socialize more in a society that likes to spread information on the internet. Phones are a positive source of knowledge, even though many would disagree. The usage of a phone improves our mentality to think and learn in an efficient way that we carry with us every way we go. Smartphones do not make unintelligent people in society,
Furthermore, as communication and writing skills diminish our school performance begins to be affected. The entertainment of mobile devices distracts nearly every student in the classroom whether it is texting, or playing games, or surfing the net. Mobile devices also play a big role in communication by making it possible for students to easily communicate with each other when they should not be. The power to communicate with virtually anyone is a major distraction. Some teens are so attached to their technological devices they sleep with phones on and wake up to answer text messages they get at night. When kids have cell phones in their classrooms they are extremely distracted from what is actually being taught. They are looking down and playing their games or going on social networking sites instead of listening to their teachers. With the constant distraction of technology and teens short attention spans reading and writing skills have suffered significantly and vocabularies are shrinking. This relates to their education and their ability to do well in school. Another problem is that technology provides students with the ability to explore numerous search engines for any problem they come across and copy them word for word. It seems that students don’t spend time thinking; they are simply repeating information instead of learning concepts and ideas. When students do this, they do not actually learn the
