The history of sports has come a long way as it developed throughout the centuries. It was where the foundation of sports was created. For example, in the Rome the chariot races were held. Today they have changed, whether it is new things being added or rules being edit; its foundation remains the same. The changes also have to do with the progress of our generation because it has changed the way we think and behave in the past and in the future. The history of sports and physical education will never stop changing. The changes will never stop because current events and upcoming events will have an impact on the current standards of sports and physical education. The ability of athletes has improved throughout the centuries which has taken the activities to a who different level leaving the ancient as history today. The ball games in the ancient civilization were as popular as they are today. For example, in mesoamerica, a religious ball game by the name of Ulama still existed in the northwestern part of Mexico. The game was played by the olmecs back in the 1800 B.C. The game consisted of a rubber ball and used the hips to hit it, similar to how tennis is played today. Over the centuries, the rules changes in order for other other tribes to play it. In this case, the pre Colombian Maya's, zapotecs and Aztecs to name a few, were part of that change to be able to play it. The sport could be related to baseball today as well, although the rules are not quite the same. The sport was demonstrated amongst these tribes different during competition. They would involve religion such as the Maya's and Aztecs who added strong religious overtones to the game Ulama played by the olmecs. Sports are prominent in today’s culture more than ever. Almost everyone watches them, has a favorite team, or even competes in sports, but this wasn't always the case. In the early 1800’s, Americans were opposed to sports. Organized sports like the ones that we have today were not common at all. The idea of sports wasn’t even on the radar of most people.
High School sports are a big part in the high school experience. Many kids participate in high school sports each year. Some kids do many more sports than others and kids get injured during them. Playing a sport in high school is difficult because you have to worry about school work and family & friends. Also, many people do not make some of the sports team they will try out for and be embarrassed of themselves. Schools should not continue to fund sports because of school work, injuries, and embarrassment.

The game is played anywhere where you can get a ball and something to throw the ball through. “G.L Pierce patented basketball on June 25, 1929.” (Bellis, “Basketball-James Naismith”). Basketball became an official Olympic sport in the 1936 game.
Throughout American history, sports has always been a big topic. Many Americans view sports as a part of their culture and an influence in their lives. There are many opportunities to play sports such as basketball, football, golf, baseball, ect. However, not everybody had equal opportunities to play sports before there were major changes in sports history. One of these major changes included other ethnicity groups and skin colored people to be allowed to play sports. African American athletes were one of the main groups of people that changed this view. They were not allowed or qualified to play sports because of their skin color and background. It is time to pay college athletes. The collegiate sports nonprofit conglomerate the NCAA is an organization that oversees over 1200 institutions between two divisions, D1 and D2. They implement rules and regulations that every student athlete must follow between these two divisions regardless of their sport or school. In today’s modern society, it’s quite hard to imagine watching professional sports without black athletes. Imagine NBA without Michael Jordan or LeBron James. However, in the older days, black athletes were not given an opportunity to compete in professional sports and were often segregated from the white athletes.
The central idea of “Why sports history is American history,” by Mark Naison, is that sports are an important part of American history. I know that it is the central idea because Mark Naison writes that, “following sports was a way to become more fully American.” Many people followed sports because they felt “more American” that way. Lots of people who followed sports were immigrants. The author also writes in the section, “Professional Athletes Provided Inspiration,” that, “black baseball superstars like Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella…” Black baseball superstars set an idea in the world that everyone can play sports. For over one hundred years, Americans young and old have enjoyed the sport of baseball. Some are actively and some leisurely. No matter which role the person has, he or she enjoys America’s favorite pastime, baseball, but is it originally an American sport? Over the many years that the sport has existed, there has been a variety of theories. The origin of baseball is unclear because some believe it began in England, others claim Abner Doubleday originated the sport, and a third faction claims it evolved in New York.
Imagine a large group of employees in a company working grueling hours, some of them far from home, going to school full time, and helping bring millions of dollars to their employer. Does this sound like a sweatshop making Nike’s or Michael Jordan clothing? Actually, this describes the everyday athlete in a big business producing sport at a National Collegiate Athletic Association member institution.
The game of basketball is recognizable high school or the NBA. The sport is very popular and is played worldwide. Everyone may also know the sport from some names of basketball stars. Maybe the names Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Dr. J, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, or Carmelo Anthony ring a bell. They are all outstanding players of the game and have a significant understanding of how the game is played. Basketball has changed alot overtime and has become one of Americas most played sports.
Sports have been around for centuries, dating back to 776 BC with the first Olympic Games. Ancient civilizations like the Egyptian, Greeks and Mayans all had a sport they enjoyed taking part in. They were created to bring people together and help them settle disputes or conflicts in an organized manner. Great leaders of the ancient world saw a fascination in sports and made it part of their reign to promote the human’s natural competitiveness. Since then, new sports have emerged and also new reasons for one to play. New sports evolve every day all over the world. Everywhere in social media and magazines you will find images of famous athletes and their achievements. Not much history has been left behind by these famous civilizations except for some cave paintings and stories passed down through generations. However, these sports have helped new ones all over the world flourish and the competitive aspect has been kept intact with some modifications to minimize some of its historical brutality.
The period of 1865 to 1950 was critical to the formation of “Modern” sport that is recognized today. In an article by Allen Guttmann titled From Ritual to Record: the nature of modern sport, Guttmann outlines seven characteristics that played a central role in the development of sports. These concepts were created as a sociological history of sports and took into place both American and European competitions. Guttmann’s notions of secularism, rationalization, bureaucracy and quantification, among others, all advanced the culture of sports; yet the most important of the stated characteristics is equality.
When it comes to wanting a career in sports, there are multiple professions and paths that lead to your destination. However, of all the options, you better expect to work hard while keeping an open mind if you want to succeed in reaching your goal.
