Sports have been around as long as there have been people to participate in them. The first recorded sporting event was the Olympic Games in 760 BC, which was only a foot race (“History” par. 5). However, it is believed that wrestling and boxing were the first sports (“History” par. 2). Sports are an important part of history, but what does that mean for student athletes. There are social, emotional, and physical effects on athletes who are also students.
For third to eighth grade students there are many benefits and few downsides to being a student athlete. Studies have found that participating in athletics results in improved focus (Merkel par. 7). Students in sports will have higher grades. Students who participate in team sports have improved social and teamwork skills (Pish par. 3). For example, in volleyball athletes must communicate whether or not they will be getting the ball or if they need someone to set them up for a spike. When children are more active their chances of diabetes, obesity, and more are decreased (“16” par. 1). Children who play sports are healthier and decrease their risks for diseases later on in life. Other studies have also found that students who stay involved in sports are less likely to get into trouble (Piccirillo par. 1). Staying involved gives students something else to do with their time.
