Sports and Students
Sports have been around as long as there have been people to participate in them. The first recorded sporting event was the Olympic Games in 760 BC, which was only a foot race (“History” par. 5). However, it is believed that wrestling and boxing were the first sports (“History” par. 2). Sports are an important part of history, but what does that mean for student athletes. There are social, emotional, and physical effects on athletes who are also students.
For third to eighth grade students there are many benefits and few downsides to being a student athlete. Studies have found that participating in athletics results in improved focus (Merkel par. 7). Students in sports will have higher grades. Students who participate in team sports have improved social and teamwork skills (Pish par. 3). For example, in volleyball athletes must communicate whether or not they will be getting the ball or if they need someone to set them up for a spike. When children are more active their chances of diabetes, obesity, and more are decreased (“16” par. 1). Children who play sports are healthier and decrease their risks for diseases later on in life. Other studies have also found that students who stay involved in sports are less likely to get into trouble (Piccirillo par. 1). Staying involved gives students something else to do with their time. At this age there is a risk for injury while playing sports, but no more than there would be if the children were playing in their
In conclusion, the benefits of sports cannot be denied. There is no doubt that interscholastic athletics in high schools are generally good for student’s mind and health. It is the mental and conceptual area that many use to support the importance of participation in competitive sports, something many can wholeheartedly agree with. It is also the same area that some point to when behavior exhibited by some athletes does not seem to support what is believed they should be learning. As with anything, however, one can only get out of something what one puts in. Athletics also provides social benefits and center on concepts such as cooperation, teamwork, and friendships. All of which can also benefit them in school and the workplace. Physical benefits
Today there is an ever growing debate on whether competitive sports are beneficial or harmful to children. While many people believe that they can be harmful, in this article I will show you some of the many ways they can be helpful to kids. There are three reasons I decided to outline here; there are life lessons can be learned, sports help improve health and they help to build self-esteem and confidence.
“Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose-it teaches you about life.”(Billie Jean King) Most students from first grade to twelfth grade say that sports are a big part of their life and make them who they were meant to be in a positive way. Some people might argue that students in sports or extracurricular activities have lower grades than the other students, but it's the opposite way around. Sports improve your performance in school because they strengthen your concentration ability and leadership traits.
To many educational institutions, it is controversial whether or not sports are beneficial to scholastic success. Offering athletic programs is said to supply students with an enhanced learning experience, as well as adding amusement to a rather dull school year. Therefore, sports should be provided in all schools to reduce stress, improve academic performance, and develop teamwork skills and equal opportunity in school.
Students are people who study at school or college. At school students, lives are divided into two sections such as academic and athletic. During high school, sports become a good portion of students’ lives. Some parents send their children to study at school and considers sports a distraction to studies. A true sport requires energy, time, and determination..There are a few disadvantages to playing sports in High School but there are even more benefits to playing sports in High School. Playing sports in high school helps improve academic performance, has physical and psychological benefits for women, and helps build social skills.
Each and every year, millions of students will participate in high school sports. In the same year, there will be millions of people questioning whether or not sports will benefit the students education. “The number of participants in high school sports increased for the 25th consecutive year in 2013-2014 with a record total of almost 7.8 million, according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)”. High school sports are a huge part of a student’s education, but many believe that they will take away from the student’s academic education. We all have to take in and understand the full affect of
Sports have many effect on children through their life. Sports and play have been linked to better cognitive abilities and being healthier. Sports teams may also give a player a family away from home becoming closer to others and being a better-rounded individual. I’m of the belief that sports bring many advantages to students not only in school but out of it too.
The 2010 article in The Journal of School Health titled Physical activity and sports team participation: Associations with academic outcomes in middle school and high school students, points to a correlation between student-athletes and higher test scores. Specifically, the study shows “for high school boys, only sports team participation was associated with a higher GPA.” (Fox CK, 2010). Moreover, research has also found that these individuals experience the desired effect of their participation such as positive peer relationships, respect for rules, competitiveness, the ability to show leadership and foster pride in citizenship. (Wright,
Scientific scholars frequently point out that the influence of sports has increased the likelihood of students being more social. Furthermore, focus among students throughout the workday increase if the observed child participates in a sport. In addition, involvement within a dedicated sport requires children to learn essential skills such as working with others and goal setting. In sum, school sports should not be diminished because they increase child socialization, increase focus levels on maintaining schoolwork and grades, and teach students how to set and reach their goals.
Sports are embedded in many American schools in a way they are not anywhere else. One element of our educational system consistently surprises them, “Sports are a huge deal in American schools,” says Earl Smith of the New York Times. The positives have always outweighed the negatives in the case against high school sports. As Sato Kai state, “The benefits of sports as part of the education process are abundant and sometimes beyond quantifications,” According to many academic specialists, sports offer formative and life long lessons such as: discipline, responsibility, self confidence, and accountability. These skills can furthermore excel your later life and give you a greater chance of being employed in a high level job. Participation in high school sports helps your later development as an adult and teaches you life long skills that can't be taught elsewhere.
Some of the present benefits of being in a school sport can include higher grades, better sense of belonging, learning life skills, being more confident, having a healthier life, having post high school benefits, being a better citizen, doing what you love to pass time and staying fit.Activities are not a diversion of schooling but rather an extension off of the educational
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
Extracurricular sports for all students will provide students with a way to interact with one another, improve their social skills and build relationships in a setting other than a classroom setting. School sport is a great way for kids to get involved in the school, make friends and maintain a healthy fitness level. By building friendships whilst growing a better understanding of social skills, students will be more motivated to live an active life. Livestrong.com says that extracurricular sports benefit kids in many ways. Kids will develop teamwork skills, to be able to work together and cooperate with one another. Sports will also teach children about long term commitments. Long term commitments such as a job are vital to support yourself in the future. By training a child to stay committed to their team, they will be taught how to commit. Coping with wins and losses whilst being involved in an extracurricular sport is also a great benefit. Children will become familiar with losing and winning alongside their teammates and they will learn that it is not just one person’s fault, it is a team effort (Koolbreeze, 2017). However even though sports will keep children living a healthier lifestyle, many children are not comfortable with playing a sport because they are not interested in sport or they are not
Athletics, for a majority of the student population, provides a very meaningful experience in education. People that participate in athletics will have better self-esteem, social confidence, and more academic achievement. Participating in an athletic program will help the student contribute to the school community, which will help them identify with school values. One factor that may be overlooked in the participation of sports is that it helps students have better physical health. Students who participate in sports learn to respect their health and they will try to stay healthier than students who have never participated in a sport. There are so many numerous reasons to get involved in athletics in the school
