Sports are a very important part of society. There is always a professional sport going on at all times. Kids today should be involved in as many sports as possible. It is a way for them to get up and get out instead of laying around the house. Nowadays, many kids are very lazy and should be encouraged to participate in team sports, it encourages team work, personal skills, and exercise. When it comes to playing team sports, it involves team work. This is one aspect that all children should have. It not only helps when playing sports but also in their daily lives. Team work is involved in the classroom. Kids have to work together to get an assignment or project done when they are in school. It is also involved when dealing with co-workers when the children grow up and have to get jobs. With playing a sport, team work also involves different roles. There will be some kids who will be the leaders in this team work, but also there will be some kids who will be the workers, and the team will count on them. There is much work involved in working as a team. Although there is much work involved, there is also many benefits to working as a team in sports. First off team work increases efficiency. The first reason I think kids should play competitive sports is communication. Communication is one major skill you will need in order to get a job, and what is convenient about this is that competitive sports can teach you this life skill. Coaches who mainly focus on communication are teaching youth athletes how to maintain and start relationships such as, family, friends, etc. Communication is mainly (in sports) taught through “games” if you are playing a game such as soccer you will need to communicate with your team members in order to work together.. Sports can be viewed as a learning environment that helps individuals learn life lessons, foster strong work habits and develop core values all the while learning a sport skill. Youth sports that truly benefit young athletes should be structured to emphasize participation more than just competition. Children enjoy a sport more when they are able to have fun (Humpries). Despite many excesses some sport programs still manage to promote important virtues like self- confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, coping skills, and persistence. Through sports kids can learn to stay organized and learn how to prioritize (Ferguson). Sports enables development of physical skills and increasing proficiency makes kids feel good about themselves. It teaches kids that failure is something to overcome and and not to fear (Meyerhoff 8-9). There has been disagreement about if children should play competitive sports, I am writing to tell you that kids should play competitive sports. Competitive sports bring many benefits to young children. By participating in competitive sports at an early age, kids develop life skills. They learn that when they see others being successful, that it is due to the hard work they put in and not just by chance. Hard work pays off and repetition builds skills. Practice may not be everyone’s favorite part of a sport, but doing something over and over again will make it become an instinct. Some people might say that sports can cause injury, children won’t get a chance to play if they are not very good, or children may be made fun of for lacking skill in that particular sport. At a young age kids are highly hyperactive and need to lose it. So why not sign them up to play a sport that they would like and enjoy playing instead of having them watching TV all day?
