Have you ever wondered about the effects that would be brought if school started later? At the moment, school clearly begins too early. This is a problem that is unquestionably bringing negative affects to many students. Many schools throughout the country are addressing this problem by considering school schedule changes including later start times for middle and high schools. Research indicates there are unfavorable effects to current school schedules, as well as well as positive effects to delayed start times. To best meet the needs of teens, school should start later.

If you want better grades and more sleep, school should start later. Many schools are considering early start times. In fact, at least three schools in Maine are considering starting school later. Middle and high schools should start later because students and parents would be less tired and because children would be able to play outside when the sun is out.

Also, it will take away the opportunity for students to prepare themselves for early college classes in the future. As one mom states on her blog “If teens are going to school later and later, they won't train their bodies to go to sleep at a reasonable hour.  Training their bodies is something that will be useful to them in adult life,” (Grose). Some principles at school still do not believe that pushing back the school start do would be beneficial. They say it is because students only take into account school starting later and not having to stay in school for the same number of hours a day. Also, that children enjoy getting out at 2 or 3 pm because then they have time for extracurricular activities and do not have to miss school if they participate in a sport (Rasicot). People against later start times feel the problem solved could be solved instead by better teen discipline.

Suppose you are getting up out of bed to go to school in the morning. Your mom needs to arrive at work at 8:30, but your school just changed their start time to 9:45 because children at the school were falling asleep in class. You are forced to awaken at the same time you started waking up at, because your mom has to be at work. You have to go with your friend, who has his mother take him everyday. You have your mother take you at the same time as before to drop you off at your friend's house to wait.

School start times should be later because school times should revolve around the student’s best ability to learn. When America started public schools, they had the same time frame, around seven to three. They did this so the farmers would have time to go and work in the afternoon. Well, needless to say we still have the same schedule now, with a much different industry and way of life. There are countless reasons schools should start later and countless studies that prove school should start later. I think some of the more important reasons include, a teen’s biological clock that makes their brain want to go to bed and get up late, car crashes caused by sleep deprivation and more sleep increasing concentration, alertness and a better attitude in class

Schools should start later because students need more time to rest in the morning. Some reasons also show that it will mess up schedules. With more rest comes more energy and with more energy comes better grades. Studies have shown that schools that start later often have better performing students.

The graduation rate alone is one very good reason for school to start later. School should start at at least 9:00.

Students should start school later in the morning. Starting school later will give teachers more time to prep for tests lessons and fieldtrips, gives more time to get to school as well as more time for sleep. Although some may argue that kids need the educational time as well as parents needing time to get to work, the arguments for starting school later are stronger.

My first reason why we should start school earlier is because kids do better when they're awake. In the article it said “in more than 40 states start school earlier than 8:30 a.m.”. In three states scientists found a significant increase in attendance, grades, and test scores. If scientist found a significant increase in grades, then if we start schools later we will get better test scores and better SBAC scores in all 40 states.

First of all, I think schools should start later. They should start later because it shows improvement in the way students perform throughout the day. A study at the US Air Force Academy showed students that started classes

With a later start time, students can have plenty of time to prepare for the next day, and get plenty of sleep. Studies also show that children are more mature at the end of the day. But again there is a disadvantage of starting school later. One of it would be ending the school later. Mostly, students get out of school around 2 to 4 P.M. they will not like the new idea of ending school around 4:30 to 5:30 P.M. And, when the student graduate and are ready to face the real world, they can’t go to work and say, I didn’t get enough sleep so change the schedule. They can get fired for that. Although there is a disadvantage of starting school later, we should focus on the advantages. Starting school late can help students to concentrate more and to pass their class.
