Raymond’s Run Essay In the short story, “Raymond’s Run,” by Toni Cade Bambara, the main theme is, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” The main character, Squeaky, learns this theme throughout the story. The two characters that help Squeaky realize the main lesson are Squeaky’s enemy, Gretchen, and Squeaky's mentally disabled brother, Raymond. In the following paragraphs you will read about how Squeaky learn’s not to immediately assume that someone is terrible, mean, fake, or even useless and without purpose.
After reading the story Raymond’s Run by Toni Cade Bombara, it has lead me to make a few statements about the main character and her appreciating the determination of others. The main character, Squeaky, doesn’t take others seriously and is quite arrogant when it comes to her running skills. However, by the end of the story, she has learned that other people are as determined as she is when it comes to running. Not only does she learn to recognize this, but she learns to appreciate it.
Why is Squeaky a proud sister? When Squeaky was running the 50-meter dash, Raymond was running also. As she was thinking about how he was running with her, she felt proud and excited for him. "'And by the time comes over I’m jumping up and down so glad to see him, my brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition."' This shows she is proud of him and she realizes he is a great runner. She looks back on how Raymond "'always keeps up with me on my trots,"' and how he "'knows how to breathe in counts of seven."' and figures out he is "'a very fine runner"' and she
Because she saw Raymond running along the sidelines, something sparks inside of her. “Cause if I’ve lost this race, or if me and Gretchen tied… I can always retire as a runner… and coach with Raymond as my champ” (Bambara 111). Squeaky doesn’t care about her win anymore. She is thinking about Raymond’s potential as a runner. Her heart is growing fond at the thought of her brother following behind her footsteps. “My brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition” (Bambara 111). This shows that Squeaky is excited for her brother’s future. He is no longer the annoying ‘little’ brother he always was. Now, he is a person with the ability to run like she can. Finally, even after the man announces that Squeaky won, she looks over at Gretchen. There is no longer venom boiling between them. “And I smile. ‘Cause she’s good, no doubt about it. Maybe she’d like to help me coach Raymond” (Bambara 112). There is a newfound respect between the two girls. Gretchen even smiles back. The walls Squeaky spent so long building up are now crumbling down piece by piece as her mind
Whenever you’re in a public place there will be people who are different, whether it is in their appearance, or the way they act. In the book Raymond’s run squeaky has the tough job of taking care of someone like this, her so called “little brother” Raymond (Raymond acts and looks younger because he suffers from a mental and physical disease**). Taking care of someone like him is a hard job for an experienced adult, let alone for a second grader. Would you be able to handle such a tough job at the mere age of 7? Squeaky managed this seemingly impossible task by using running as an escape to win, to complete goals and primarily for freedom.
There is no track meet she hadn’t won. Now, days she is running the fifty yard dash. This is who Squeaky is a fast runner. Squeaky has an older Raymond, who has a disability so he needs a look over. Even though Squeaky is younger than Raymond
Although confidence is a good trait to have, too much may blind you from someone else’s talents. The main character of Raymond’s Run is a girl named Squeaky, which is her nickname, who is full of pride and has to take care of her “little” brother Raymond. Squeaky has a brother named Raymond who has a disorder called Hydrocephalus that is caused by swelling in his brain, due to fluids. The disorder makes his head bigger than that of the average person and it causes Raymond act younger than he actually is, so Squeaky takes on the responsibility of protecting him. Squeaky is running in a 50 yard dash with a newcomer named Gretchen, who thinks that even though it’s her first year participating, she will win the race and beat Squeaky. The short story “The Dinner Party” revolves around a stereotype when the young girl tells the Colonel that women are done with the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era”. This causes the Colonel to say that women have not outgrown that, which then leads him to make a stereotypical remark about women. If the colonel in “The Dinner Party” had known or met Squeaky from “Raymond’s Run” he would not have made the remark about women because she proves the young girl´s statement that women are no longer as “fluttery”(Gardener, 167) as they were before, she also does

Some things making them similar are having few friends, it doesn’t say Squeaky has any friends at all in the story anywhere, but also, it only ever says Gretchen has 2 friends.. I believe that would be because she is so competitive, she doesn’t have time aside from practicing to worry about friends. Squeaky is also very competitive as it says “... if he is seriously thinking [she] would lose the race on purpose…”
