Step to Courage

People define courage as the ability to face something they’re afraid of, or having a strong heart. However, in To Kill a Mockingbird the author displays true courage as standing up for what one believes in even when it means risking something precious. It is to fight for what is right regardless if one’s winning or losing. In the novel, Harper Lee teaches valuable lessons about moral courage, by using one of the characters, Atticus, as a model of a Christ-like man of courage. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch wanted to let Jem know what courage actually is. He said to him, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” What Atticus meant in this quote refers to Mrs. Dubose having the determination to not be dependent on her morphine addiction before she dies. Mrs. Dubose fought against great odds, even though she knew she was dying. This quote also applies to the case of Tom Robinson. Atticus Finch risks his life numerous times in order to stay true to his values. His pursuit of righteousness shows that he does have real courage. An example from To Kill a Mockingbird is when Atticus sat in front of the jail to prevent the mob to hurt Tom Robinson. Scout Finch, Atticus’s daughter, saw this scene and realized that good people may not always do good things, they can also do bad things to harm people. Therefore, she stood up for Atticus. From this, one should understand that real courage could be shown through little things, and that it doesn’t always have to be saving the world or saving someone’s life.
