In Stephen King's excerpt "On Writing" we get an in depth analysis from his point of view, on what a writer's toolbox is composed of. Every person's toolbox differs depending on what they see to help them excel in their own writing, through their own experiences and preferences. "Good writing is about making good choices when it comes to picking the tools you plan to work with." (Page 128). King's top priorities that are vital to produce a good story include vocabulary, grammar, and elements of style.
Authors use literary elements and techniques as tools to convey meaning. These devices are the means by which authors bring richness and clarity to a text. They express moods or feelings that allow the reader to connect with the writing. In On Writing, the author, Stephen King makes use of literary elements to tell his story. The techniques King uses are effective in portraying vivid images and feelings in the reader’s mind.
King utilizes ethos and pathos effectively throughout his book “On Writing” in order to progress his thoughts and experiences to make his argument stronger. The author makes some notable points in each section of the book by implementing rhetoric to accomplish the purpose, which is to get across to the reader’s minds what they must do in order to better themselves as writers and become successful in the writing world. King’s paramount argument was that writing isn’t about the materialistic rewards you will receive, such as money, getting famous, etc.; it is about bettering yourself and inspiring others who read your work as well as yourself as you journey the wonders of your mind.

As I was lying in bed recalling the event happened an hour before I was thinking to myself that I will never look at lightning the same way again. Thunder and lightning was still present in the night sky as I lay there in bed thanking God I was alive and well. Each flash of lightning lit the entire room and each clap of thunder rattled the windows of my hotel room. Lightning can seem much more terrifying when you’re up 20,000 ft in the mountains, and the thunder sounds a lot louder too. The sound of nature’s fury seemed to slowly descend as the night went on, but my nerves did not. I was still stunned and in shock of being stuck in a lightning storm high in the mountains. I never thought about the power and damage lightning can inflict
King uses allusion like the Declaration of Independence and references famous American Idols like James Meredith and T.S. Elliot. This not only helps King’s credibility, but also for the ideals he stands for. He also masterfully uses rhetorical questions like, “but what else is there to do when you are alone for days in the dull monotony of a narrow jail cell, other then write long letters, and pray long prayers” (Paragraph, 5). King also asks the question, “or should I say book?” (Paragraph, 5). King is using imagery in his rhetorical questions to illustrate his dull and desolate surroundings. He says he is writing a book because he is implying that there are a lot of civil rights issues that he would like to
Good and evil, almost everything can be categorized as one or the other. Although is it fair to label a person after one situation? A “kind” or “nice,” a person can go from looking harmless and innocent too vicious and hateful. If it is villainous to do something, is it not also villainous to watch it for entertainment? In Stephen King’s essay “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” he states that we are all as much of a psychopath as the people we put in asylums. The human condition has a corrupt core, even if some people conceal it in a dark place and fight their urges with horror movies. While many may believe the horror genre is childish, King’s ideas are accurate because the human condition feeds off of terror.

Where he lived, there was a highway where dogs and cats were frequently killed. When Stephen’s daughter’s cat was killed on that highway, he came up with the inspiration to write Pet Semetary. He wondered what if a man buried his daughter’s pet but he never told her and the pet come back the following day, but it was fundamentally different. The personal experience that led to the book would not have been discovered without research; However, ideas like King came up with are all derived from somewhere and is mostly derived from experiences that were lived

King has many personal beliefs and ideas on writing. He believes that too much is not good for writing and says that when he is writing, he doesn’t think about much. King knew that he wanted to be a writer at a very early age. King began sending many stories to magazines, and all of them were rejected. King finally began getting published in high school.
Stephen King’s essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” explains how horror movies are important to keep one’s sanity. King starts by saying that everyone is a little mentally ill, even in a subtle way. By seeing horror movies younger people test themselves and prove that they aren’t afraid, as well as to confirm that they are much more normal than the people shown in these movies. We also go to have fun. In a slightly morbid way we find these movies entertaining. King says that perhaps horror movies allow us to let go of certain morals and maturity and give our emotions free reign for a few hours. He also illustrates that sanity is possibly only a matter of degree: one is not simply insane or not insane.
Today, I had volleyball practice for two hours. This would be bad enough by itself, as I detest running, and practice begins with the ritual of running laps around the gym. Today, however, the assistant coach continuously pestered me with unsolicited and unhelpful advice. I was annoyed, partly because I didn’t respect my coach’s suggestions. He has never played volleyball; I probably know the sport better than he does. My annoyance turned to anger when he continued to bother me and no one else. Most of my anger came from the simple truth that I don’t like to be told what to do. As my coach told me to abandon my approach, I wanted to scream in his face that, “Hey! My way works just as well!”
