I’m my own Person: Stereotypes and identity In Previous Conditions Stereotypes plays an important role in the society that we live in. Our minds are wired to make quick evaluations on people and objects we see and use prior knowledge to conclude. Stereotypes often leads to misconception which affect those on the receiving side greatly. Those on the receiving side will often question their identity because of these discriminations. Some individuals go through Identity crisis for many reasons including stereotypes. During the Jim Crow era, African Americans struggle to be who they are because of the stereotypes from both the whites and blacks. In the short story, "Previous Condition" from the book, Going to Meet the Man, by James Baldwin, Baldwin does a good job of implementing the theme of Stereotypes and identity crisis into the main character’s struggle throughout the story. The only problem with that was Peter’s skin color. Throughout the story Peter struggle to fit in because of the stereotypically roles. When got evicted from the apartment he was living he expressed, he told Jules, "... I’m not worried about that miserable little room. I’m worried about what’s happening to me, to me, inside. I don’t walk the streets, I crawl. I’ve never been like this before. Now when I go to a strange place I wonder what will happen, will I be accepted, if I’m accepted, can I accept? —” (Baldwin ). This quote was peter's response to Jules suggestion in fighting against the landlord that evicted him. But as peter stated, he doesn’t want to waste his time fighting for something he has the right to do. He's more worried about what going to happened to him after facing these obstacles. He was despondent to the fact that he must complain to the higher ups just to do the things he wanted to do all because of his skin
