Stereotypes In The Breakfast Club

Each student has their own history, characteristics and behaviors. Honestly, these stereotypes are real, principally during high school, where people start to create their own thoughts, to participate of determined groups and to stablish their own life styles. John, the “easygoing”, has a past full of delicate situations: he suffered by abuse and he does not have a good relationship with his father, who is a drug user. Because of his history, he seems to be disinterested and selfish, the legitimate bad guy. Brian, the “nerd”, has his life based on achieve success in studies. His parents make a huge pressure in his life, so he is always worried about his scholar activities, trying to get the higher grade possible. Because of that, he is treated as unsociable, and he is far from being popular in the school. Allison is “the weird” of the students, she uses strange clothes and has a peculiar style. Her parents do not really care about her, causing this weird behavior. She is quiet, does not talk too much and feels lonely, so she goes to detention by her own desire. Claire, is the “preppy” girl. With a good looking, she is also kind of selfish. Her parents are in a constant fight, which makes her acts like she does. Andrew is “the athlete” of the group. He receives a huge pressure from his parents in all the fields of his life, and he grew up with the thought that “you have to win”, which makes him do things that he does not really want.

The nineteen eighties were the most important and remembered decades; Ronald Reagan, MTV, cliques, fashion icons and Blockbuster. High school was different than today. “The Breakfast Club” (1985) by John Hughes was the most iconic movie to sum up the eighties; a movie delving into the different stereotypes and stigma of mental illness and bullying, in high school. Adolescence was the time of transition between childhood and adulthood; it is a time for sense of identity. (Chronological Description) For example, there were many labels used on the students by others. (Exemplification) There was the jock, rich girl, geek, outcast, and the rebel. (Objective Description) In the end it had also showed that perspective stereotypes do not matter. The clothing was represented on what was worn in the eighties, in which the trend is slowly coming back into style. “The Breakfast Club” best describes this era because of how the students labeled each other, disrespected one another, and by the way they dressed.

Every person in this world has a stereotype either positive or negative associated with them from sexual orientation to race to age. However, in most cases this is not true whatsoever. Through the analysis of Hall, Dyer, and the films Zootopia and Maltese Falcon it will be shown that stereotypes are ever changing and are producing the social norms while at the same time are being rammed down your throat and reinforced through films.

These are the common stereotypical factors that are being endured by thousands of americans everywhere. Today, stereotypes are familiar factors since today's society constantly uses them. A stereotype can be defined as a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Perhaps, the most used terms that contribute to stereotypes are the misconceptions. The definition of misconceptions, when searched, is said to be a view or opinion that is incorrect because it is based on faulty thinking or understanding.

Dr. Shankar Vedantam is a profound author and scientist for the NPR. The author of the passage “How a Self-Fulfilling Stereotype Can Drag Down Performance” Shankar Vedantam believes that by reminding a certain race of people about their race before a test they will score lower than if not reminded. Shankar’s purpose in revealing this information is to erase the imagery of stereotypes when testing. He adopts a different tone when the article moves on by going from a factual article to a more opinionated one. The intended audience is for people who stereotype because he is trying to convince them to try not to do it to any other people.

A stereotype is a fixed general image or set of characteristics representing a particular type of person or thing, but which may not be true in reality. It is important to challenge people who are involved in stereotyping. It negatively affects society and raises anger among the victims of stereotypes. It creates violence and hate in society. For example, if someone comes from another country and people make fun of him/her, he/she can start to hate them because of their negative attitude toward him/her. Stereotypes can be both positive and negative, but since stereotypes are used to bring others down, people automatically think negative when they hear the word stereotype. Before you judge others you need to get to know them because you don't know their story, you just entered in between one of their chapters. A well known example of a stereotype is that anybody that wears glasses is automatically smart. Which can be believed since it’s glorified in movies and t.v shows. Whether these beliefs about the group characteristics are true or not they still influence the way people think. Which leads to social categorization and therefore people can tell someone’s role of just being part of a group.

In social psychology, if people view specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things must indicate a person or a group, this relatively fixed class of view called stereotype. Stereotype means the appearance that people think a person or a group look like. Stereotypes probably affected by education, society, even culture. Sometime these views or thoughts don’t represent real world correctly.
