Many people have this stereotype about Pit-bulls being a dangerous and unpredictable type of breed. It is true that a majority of people think that pitbulls can be dangerous but then there are a majority of them that think they are sweet loveable dogs. A quick statistic from Pitbullinfor.org states that “20% of the 90 million dogs/breeds are Pitbull’s” (- Accurate Statistics and Information, 2018). In my paper I’ll be talking about both sides of the stereotype of this breed. Also, I’ll be adding my personal experience with dealing with Pit-bulls. A majority of people in the U.S have a stereotype against pitbulls. They think that they are a dangerous breed of dog and that they shouldnt be a family dog. For example, “A young boy named Kevin …show more content…
Dr. Julie Gilchrist from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that, “If anyone says one dog (breed) is more likely to kill ... that's not based on scientific data” (Dr. Julie Gilchrist, 2018). This statement is so very true, just because someone says that a breed is dangerous or is “likely to kill” doesn’t mean that they will. The breed of dogs or their DNA has nothing to do with if they attack or kill someone, it has to do with how they are raised and on their owners actions or behavoirs. Also, a famous actor Patrick Stewart, fostered a Pitbull named Ginger. Patrick Stewart and his wife Sunny Ozel had an interview with ‘Today’s Talk show’ she described to them about her first meeting with Ginger was “The "beautiful, playful, handsome, happy dog," (Arin Greenwood, 2017). The way the Sunny had described Ginger was great. Sunny and Patrick are both head of heels for this “beautiful” dog, they are also trying to prove too the people whom are against this breed that they are sweet and gentle dogs. Lesley Brog, is the founder of the nonprofit animal rescue group Wags and Walks. Brog had also told ‘Today’ that "I call her my spirit animal” (Arin Greenwood, 2017). Lesley, had also fallen in love with Gingers personality and thought she would make a great pet and deserves a chance in this world. There is a video of Patrick and Ginger playing in the pool, and you can just tell how …show more content…
When still living in Fargo, I would volunteer six hours of my time per week at ‘4 Luv of Dogs’. This humane society worked more with the Pitbull breed. The dogs that where there were the sweetest, most loving dogs I’ve ever met in my life. While volunteering there I came across different types of behaviors with them, some were scared to be touched because they were beaten by their previous owners, or terrified by other dogs because they were used for dog fighting. I also came across loving ones that all they wanted was to be in your lap and have kisses, hugs, and tons of belly rubs. I also, own a Pitbull mix, named Akira. Akira is so sweet and gentle. She weights 65lbs and thinks she’s a lap dog, and will drown you in her
People should be allowed to own pit bulls as pets because they’re not bad dogs. They’re only aggressive and mean if you train them to be mean. Dogs don’t have a conscience so they can’t be “bad”. It takes a lot of attention to take care of a pit. The need 30-45 minutes of exercise per day. Pit bulls were used for fighting and some as bait. In the early 20th century pit bulls used to be the #1 family dog. Pit bulls are not a bad breed of dogs\. They Are only aggressive if they are trained to be a guard dog. Pitbulls are nice dogs if raised correctly. Dogs are seized from dogfighting rings everyday. The shelter Runs different tests to see if they're aggressive of comfortable around people especially kids. If they show no aggression they'll be put up for adoption or they'll euthanize the
Most shelters and veterinarians can speak to the fact that dogs are greatly affected by previous and current owners. Dogs that have been neglected while they were puppies can negatively affect how they view people. Anxiety medication has become available to dogs and so has forms of therapy for dog’s social behaviors. The people who own “Pit Bull” breeds are more often than not those affiliated with illegal activity and violence. Veterinarian, Roger L. Welton, makes this statement “Pitt Bulls become a danger to society when they are purposely tormented and brutalized into being violent animals by sociopathic individuals who view the dogs as a means to elevate their status by having vicious dogs protect their property, or to make them money by cruelly fighting these animals with one another. It is the despicable human element that creates monsters where there were once innocent animals with the potential to make loving pets...Rather than blame the dogs for their irresponsible, often cruel treatment, we need to hold the people who mistreat them accountable for the consequences. Search and prosecution of these people needs to be more aggressive. Penalties need to be more severe, and the media needs to care more.”(Welton, "Web DVM") People that treat “Pit Bulls” violently lead to the dangerous behavior these dogs are known for. Most
The main reason pit bulls attack is because they are mentally unstable, a mixed breed and show overbearing traits, or because they are mistreated by their owners. The public must understand that the three “pit bull breeds were bred for dog fighting and bear and bull-baiting” (PBRC). On the other hand, they were also kept as “nanny dogs” and used for herding cattle. “Pit bulls are ideal for therapy work because of their pleasant nature” (PBRC). These are three of the most stable breeds known to man. They have a very high temperament test score, 86% as of 2010, a lot higher than most breeds. “The American Pit Bull Terrier is one of the top 5 most stable breeds in the country” (PBRC). Anyone can see that this is an excellent breed of dog. There are a few things that people should know though. “Pit bulls have a lower Tolerance to dogs, but with any breed, a dog’s tolerance changes as they mature” (PBRC). “Maturity can come late with pit bull breeds” (Villalobos Rescue Center). The reason for this low tolerance is because of their history of dog fighting. It has been bred into them to have the will to fight. Pit bulls usually do not start a fight most of the time, but they will not back down or give up. Due to this, owners must be cautious and attentive.
MAIN IDEA #2: One of the biggest preconceived notions about the pit bull is that they are the most dangerous dogs in the world that run around wild-eyed and blood thirsty. They have been improperly labeled as vicious creatures that are incapable of love and
Pit bulls are the most misunderstood dog breeds in the world. When people hear the word pit bull they automatically think of dogs fighting and attacking. When people say "pit bull" they're usually referring to a range of breeds and, often, a mixed-breed dog. (Lawrence, C Louisville Magazine Feb 2007) People think they are a very dangerous breed of dog. Because of this, some areas do not allow pit bulls and breeds like them. Pit bulls are the leading culprit of dog bites in America, but on the other hand, they are the gentlest dogs people will ever meet. The National Canine Temperament Testing Association
Pit Bulls are among the top percentage of dog bites across the nation, but it partly due to the misrepresentation. Most handlers just see a similarity to a Pit Bull’s physical appearance and then the dog is classified as such. The media always misrepresents and wrongly accuses Pit Bulls, they are always quick to name the pit bull breed as the attacking dog. The government also does the same thing if a dog has similarities to a Pit Bull, then it is automatically classified as a Pit Bull even if it’s not correct. They don’t care about
I want you to go back and ask yourself some of my questions I asked previously in my essay. Were you skeptical of pit bulls like other citizens in the Shullsburg are, if so, has your opinion changed at all towards this topic? Now, I didn’t write this to totally change your opinion. I just wanted to give you some information to be brought more awareness to this misunderstood breed. Unfortunately, there are many other breeds like pit bulls that have restrictions in Shullsburg that are not fair, but I decided to talk about pit bulls because I have one myself. I wish people in our town were as open-minded as my family and I. Now at the end of my sincere essay I hope you take into consideration the dog restrictions in
The pits that are raised in a fighting environment usually are the more aggressive dogs and the more likely to be euthanized because of their aggressive behavior. These fighting dogs are the reasons for most of the stereotypes directed towards the dog breeds. For example: “Pit bulls are the most aggressive dog breed” (17 Things...) Pit Bulls scored an 86.8% on the American Temperament Test or the ATT, which is a test that all dog breeds take in order to figure out the dog’s temper and aggression. The higher the score the better the dog, and the Pits just so happen to score second best, putting them above other common “nicer” household dogs like the Golden Retriever, the Beagle and the German Shepherd (Pisani). There are also many Pit Bulls being blamed for the actions of their owners, because of many of these actions it has caused many states to ban Pits. There are 17 states in the U.S. that have some type of pan against the breed (Pit Bull Bans (USA)...). Although these bans are places many criminals still continue to breed the dogs under ground and receive no
Pit bulls have a lot of history. Pit bulls been bred for human companionship, and since the 1900s, they have been bred for conformation showing as well. Pit bulls have been used as farm dogs, family dogs, military mascots, and all-purpose companions. In England, the Staffie Bull is known as the “The Nanny Dog” or “The Children’s Nursemaid” because of their placid and nurturing demeanor toward children. They say “Regardless of how gentle your dog is, all dogs of any breed should never be left alone unsupervised with children”.Throughout their history in America, pit bull dogs have

What is the first breed people suppose of when they hear about a dog attack or dog fighting? The majority answer for people would be a Pit Bull. The media has led a fair amount of people to believe that Pit Bulls are a dangerous breed of dog. Pit Bulls are perceived as fighting dogs because of their strength and stature; that is what captures the media’s attention as to why they are so dangerous. However, Pit Bulls are similar to any other dog breed that was bred to do something.
People are 5 times more likely to drown in 5-gallons of water, 60 times more likely to die from a fallen coconut, and 200 times more likely to die by taking aspirin than get attacked by a pit bull (Logan Wilson). Pit bulls are actually related to the English bull-baiting dog. The English bull-baiting dog was bred to hold bulls, bears and large animal around the head. In the 1800s, bull-baiting dogs were outlawed. Now, for many years right now, people have discriminated pit bulls because of their reputation.
Owning a pit bull in today’s day and age has one of two reactions: Either the person loves them or is terrified of them. There are so many myths about Pit Bulls and they are just that. Myths. Some of the myths that surround pit bulls are that they have “lock jaw” and they have a killer instinct that does not stop at just killing other animals. Pit bull advocates, such as myself, know that Pit Bulls have always been known as the “nanny dog” throughout history because of how much they love children and their loyalty to their families. Mean or vicious dogs come from ignorant, irresponsible owners. The bottom line is that not all pit bulls are bad.
Many studies have shown that Pit Bulls are loving and loyal animals. Many have grown up with them as iconic dogs their whole lives such as Petey from the Little Rascals movie and countless famous war dogs. But after the media started to get stories of people conducting dog fights with Pit Bulls they are automatically the most aggressive dog on the earth. These animals don’t get to choose if they want to fight or not, it is about survival when any dog is thrown into that situation. The people running them gamble a lot of money into these fights and when a dog loses, if the other dog hasn’t killed the owners most likely will. It is no way to treat an animal and is enough to turn any dog of any breed or any person for that matter into a monster. But, just because of these unfortunate stories, all Pit Bulls are automatically considered dangerous. There are Pit Bull advocates out there that are trying to show the world that they are amazing and loving pets, but all that effort gets kicked under the rug after an irresponsible owner who neglects and poorly trains their dog, gets out and bites another dog or person, all effort is lost and the media is all over it again expressing how dangerous this breed is, just because of one irresponsible owner. This is a problem because this breed of dogs is being penalized and put down for the actions of careless humans. If this continues to happen and they ban all Pit Bulls, who’s to say what breed they will go after
My pit bull is well behaved, far from aggressive, and family friendly pet. My Chihuahua was meaner and showed more signs of aggressive behavior than my pit bull. My pitbull has not only our trust but everyone else's that comes around. Our pitbull gets along with other dogs with no problem while our other dogs didn’t get along so well. The most “harm” my Pit Bull will do to anyone even if he doesn’t know them is lick you to death.
