Stereotypes Of Pitbulls

Many people have this stereotype about Pit-bulls being a dangerous and unpredictable type of breed. It is true that a majority of people think that pitbulls can be dangerous but then there are a majority of them that think they are sweet loveable dogs. A quick statistic from Pitbullinfor.org states that “20% of the 90 million dogs/breeds are Pitbull’s” (- Accurate Statistics and Information, 2018). In my paper I’ll be talking about both sides of the stereotype of this breed. Also, I’ll be adding my personal experience with dealing with Pit-bulls. A majority of people in the U.S have a stereotype against pitbulls. They think that they are a dangerous breed of dog and that they shouldnt be a family dog. Dr. Julie Gilchrist from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that, “If anyone says one dog (breed) is more likely to kill ... that's not based on scientific data” (Dr. Julie Gilchrist, 2018). This statement is so very true, just because someone says that a breed is dangerous or is “likely to kill” doesn’t mean that they will. The breed of dogs or their DNA has nothing to do with if they attack or kill someone, it has to do with how they are raised and on their owners actions or behavoirs. Also, a famous actor Patrick Stewart, fostered a Pitbull named Ginger. Patrick Stewart and his wife Sunny Ozel had an interview with ‘Today’s Talk show’ she described to them about her first meeting with Ginger was “The "beautiful, playful, handsome, happy dog," (Arin Greenwood, 2017). The way the Sunny had described Ginger was great. Sunny and Patrick are both head of heels for this “beautiful” dog, they are also trying to prove too the people whom are against this breed that they are sweet and gentle dogs. Lesley Brog, is the founder of the nonprofit animal rescue group Wags and Walks. Brog had also told ‘Today’ that "I call her my spirit animal” (Arin Greenwood, 2017). Lesley, had also fallen in love with Gingers personality and thought she would make a great pet and deserves a chance in this world. When still living in Fargo, I would volunteer six hours of my time per week at ‘4 Luv of Dogs’. This humane society worked more with the Pitbull breed. The dogs that where there were the sweetest, most loving dogs I’ve ever met in my life. While volunteering there I came across different types of behaviors with them, some were scared to be touched because they were beaten by their previous owners, or terrified by other dogs because they were used for dog fighting. I also came across loving ones that all they wanted was to be in your lap and have kisses, hugs, and tons of belly rubs. I also, own a Pitbull mix, named Akira. Akira is so sweet and gentle. She weights 65lbs and thinks she’s a lap dog, and will drown you in her
