Imagine that you just won the Gold in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Now imagine the Gold getting Stripped from your hands by the officials of the Olympics. All because you decided to take steroids. Every year 45% of all Athletes take some sort of steroid or performance enhancing drug (Barnes). Many high school athletes take steroids for football or baseball. But some kids take steroids for weight lifting and that is all they take it for the do not even play sports. Both of these reasons are wrong morally and legally, but if there was one that was worse it would taking steroids for weight lifting. At least the people that take it for sports have a reason. Steroids may provide you a scholarship to college but it eventually show and …show more content…
Players gained a lot of muscles quickly (also unhealthy, but no one knew) and raced to hit more home runs than their opponents. This has created a huge discussion throughout MLB on how to crack down on these players and how to prevent it from happening in the future. Even though he’s the all time leader in home runs, points, and hit percentage, Barry Bonds’ name will forever be marked as the “bad guy” because of he used steroids. In the July of 2013, Ryan Braun, an outfielder, was under a 65 game suspension for taking steroids. Shortly after, 12 MLB players were given a 50 game suspension. Alex Rodriguez is under huge a 200 game suspension (which he is currently on) from taking steroids and then giving them out to his team. (Baseball). Steroids are used in sports, for the most part, to amplify the performance of athletes. In most cases, the steroids used among athletes are anabolic types. Anabolic actually means “build or increase mass”. These steroids have been in use by high school, college, and professional athletes all around the globe for centuries. There are a huge amount of different types of steroids; in-fact, there are many of diferent types found in nature. The ones found in nature are not as effective as the ones that are man made. The anabolic steroids are probably the most common type of steroid used among athletes. Within this classification, again we have a lot of different types of steroids; countless forms, alternate forms and derivatives, and there are so many it can, at times, seem very
Anabolic Steroids are taken by athletes to increase muscle mass while decreasing fat rapidly and efficiently. They can push the physiological limits of the muscle, making it bigger, faster and stronger than it can get naturally. Steroids achieve this affect on the body by enhancing the natural process of muscle building. The use of steroids has had a negative impact on the lives and careers of many athletes, causing suspensions, bans, and even the loss of medals and other awards and records earned in international events. A few of the high profile athletes whose lives and careers by their anabolic steroid use include: Barry Bonds, Lyle Alzada, Jose Canseco, Ben Johnson, Chris Benoit, Roger Clemens, Marion Jones, Alex Rodriguez and Lance Armstrong.
In Major League Baseball, numerous players have put up tremendous statistics and record breaking numbers. There are a great amount of players in the league that have done this naturally, however it is not uncommon to see star players get caught taking performance enhancing drugs or steroids. Steroid use in baseball has been an issue since the earliest days of the game, and can be seen very frequently in players today. Jose Canseco was a star hitter in the major leagues, who had admitted to steroid later in his career. Canseco once estimated that 85% of other players were also taking performance enhancing drugs. Though that estimate is not proven, there are still many players today that are taking these steroids, and it needs to remain an issue in the eyes of the MLB. Taking these drugs not only promotes the risk of significant side effects and health problems to the player consuming them, but it makes changes to the game itself as well. The way the game is being played has changed over time due to this issue, and players are receiving advantages that other players are not. Overall, these illegal drugs are unfair to other players in the game and simply are not safe, and should never become legal in the league.
In 2013, 12 Major League Baseball players each received fifty game suspensions without pay for using performance enhancing drugs. Big names such as Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez were on this list. Testosterone, an illegal substance, is what is found in the performance enhancing drugs. Testosterone increases male characteristics such as body hair, aggression, deepening of the voice, and of course massive muscle growth (“Steroids” par. 1). Some professional athletes claim to use performance enhancing drugs to recover more quickly from injury; others take them because they have not seen the positive feedback in working out, without the use of the steroids. Steroids may be referred to as 'roids', juice, hype, or pump and they are
II. Main point 1: There are different types of steroids but I'm going to talk about Anabolic steroids which are most commonly used by athletes.
Drugs in sports is becoming a problem everywhere. “Another 26-year old athlete died of liver cancer after taking a number of different types of steroids over a four year period ” (Drugs and…). This is significant because this shows how dangerous drugs can be. If we have drug testing in schools this student could still be alive and would have stopped drugs before it got bad. The evidence points to the fact that drugs are a major health risk that is very concerning. In some cases taking drugs can even lead to death. In addition, another situation took place that affected a college student named Bob. Bob tried everything to gain weight so he could play football, so he chose to try steroids like everyone else. Steroids got him to play professional football, but horrible things were happening to him. He was having serious health problems. Bob quit drugs and is lucky to be alive (Drugs and…). This connects to the fact that doing drugs is a major
The abuse of steroids among players in Major League Baseball is corrupting the image of America's Pastime as well as endangering the health of those who use the illegal substances. The lack of testing and punishment for the use of illegal substances like steroids in the Major Leagues portrays a negative image to aspiring young athletes. They see their role models using steroids and becoming better athletes rather than seeing suspensions for the illegal behavior or the negative health effects.
Athletes that are in sports should not be allowed to consume steroids. Or if they are consuming steroids they should not be allowed to play sports. There are many unfair advantages of athletes that use steroids to make gain in a game they love to play. First, the use of steroids is cheating and it violates the rules and contracts athletes have agreed to. A player uses steroids to enhance his or her performance is illegal, so when a player uses them they are cheating. For example; Cheating is monitored today in sports by the use of referees or umpires. Referees and umpires cannot enforce steroid use because they have no way of telling if a player is on steroids or not they cannot be
Over the past decade, Major League Baseball has seen a dark period now known as “The Steroids Era”. From 1994 to 2006, 115 MLB players were linked to steroids or other performance
Athletic Associations have taken the subject of Anabolic Steroid use very seriously. Major League Baseball currently enforces a strict code against the use of steroids. For a first positive steroid test, the player caught using the drug is suspended for ten games. For a second positive steroid test, the player caught using the drug is suspended for 100 games. Finally, for a third positive test, the player caught using steroids is given a lifetime ban from baseball. (Espn.com/news)
The game of Baseball is an American pastime. During the late 19th century and early 20th century it was the most widely played sport in the country. Baseball back then was what video games and televisions is to us now. Throughout the years baseball has changed in some good ways and in some bad ways. The integrity of the game has been changed in a bad way by steroids. Steroids is what makes the game today so much different than it was back then. Of course steroids have been a controversy in this game for a long time but not to the extent it is right now in the late 90s , and 2000s. The punishments that they give right now for steroid use is
In the days when steroids were only being used by body builders and professional wrestlers, stories about performance enhancing drugs could only be found on the back pages of the newspapers. When former Oakland Raiders All-Pro Lyle Alzado admitted to steroid use in a 1991 Sports Illustrated article the whispers about what professional athletes were using steroids began to get louder. (Puma, 2005) Finally, in 2002, when Caminiti, a former MVP, came clean, two things were clear; athletes in all sports were using these drugs, and that they worked. The fact that steroid use had permeated our national pastime combined with the media explosion of the internet and 24 hour a day sports talk created a perfect storm which created the biggest sports story of the new millennium so far. However, two other facts remained clear, performance enhancing drugs were old news, and athletes in all sports from all over the world had been using them for years.
The sport that has gotten the most attention on the subject of steroids is Major League Baseball. Due to the suspected prevalence of them from the late 80’s up until the present day, the so-called baseball purists now question all the records and achievements
Former MLB player Mark Mcgwire is one of the most famous athletes to be caught taking steroids. He said himself that he took the steroids to try and recover from a nagging injury so that he could play more and longer. An NBA athletic trainer told ESPN, “When you’re play every other night for 82 games it becomes hard for a person to stay healthy, so of course players turn to steroids.” He also stated that he thought steroids were a good thing for players that wanted to stay healthy longer. That statement is true as long as players take them to stay or get healthy but not just to get
There is currently a war on drugs and the way that they are used. I’m talking about steroids specifically. Professional sports and school sports have been unfortunately victims in this war. And just like any other war, there is two sides. Some people think that steroids should be illegal and banned from sports. These people believe that steroids have a negative impact on society, as well as health risks and its history. Other people think that steroids should be legal and used in sports. These people believe that steroids have physical benefits. In my opinion, I think athletes should be drug tested and steroids be
I have evaluated and thought about the debate of steroids use over a period. I continue to find myself in the middle of the road with this issue. I believe there are health issues with taking performance enhancing substances, the same as is taking any other type of drug, legal or illegal substances. There are proven side effects with taking any medication from blood pressure medicine to Chantix (the help quit smoking drug). We have heard for years how horrible it is to take steroids, additionally how it can lead to cancer and other ruthless health issues. We also know but are not willing to admit that many of the day today medications doctors are so freely issuing has the same or very similar possibilities. There are many of us not prepared to take any medication for an extended period, simply because of the long-term health risks. Knowing the health hazard facts do not deter many from taking prescribed medications, and it does not stop many from taking steroids or other illegal substance either. The answer is very simple, we love the rewards, and are wanting them at whatever cost.
