I. Introduction
Attention Getter: (PowerPoint image) When we see someone extremely muscular, we wonder is the person using steroids?
Background: Although people have been using steroids over , it wasn't until headline we started learning
Audience Relevance: Although I’m guessing most of you have an idea of what steroids are, I don’t think there are many classes or workshops offered that talk about steroids.
Speaker Credibility: Steroids are not only used by bodybuilders, other athletes and sometimes regular people have access to it and use it. There some misconceptions of steroids and a lot that people don’t know about in detail, that’s why I have researched more about this topic to give you an overview of steroids.
Thesis: My goal in this informative speech is to share the knowledge I have gained about steroids.
Preview of main points: First, I will begin by telling you what is steroid, then, what people use it for, and lastly, I’d like to share with you all the effects steroids have on your health.
Transition to 1st Main Point: To begin, let me start by informing you about what steroids are and its history.
II. Main point 1: There are different types of steroids but I'm going to talk about Anabolic steroids which are most commonly used by athletes.
Sub-point A: According to an article on the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a website filled with information on drugs, last updated on March 2016, anabolic steroids are synthetic (lab made) variations of the male sex hormone testosterone. The proper term for these compounds is anabolic-androgenic steroids. "Anabolic" refers to muscle building, and "androgenic" refers to increased male sex characteristics. Some common names used for anabolic steroids are Gear, Juice, Roids, and Stackers.
Sub-point B: According to an article on CESAR, a website filled with university-based research addressing issues related to alcohol and other drugs, last updated on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, they state that in the early 1930’s a team of scientists created a synthetic (lab made) form of testosterone (a male hormone) to help treat men who were unable to produce enough of the hormone for normal growth, development and sexual functioning. They were later used in World War 2
Background: Although people have been using steroids over 50 years, it wasn't until we started seeing headlines about athletes using steroids that it started receiving attention.
Has anyone ever thought about trying to use steroids? There are many people have never taken steroids before. However, they are curious to try steroids at least once. “The first steroid was synthesized in 1935 for medical purpose,” mainly to produce more testosterone for normal development and sexual functioning (“Performance-Enhancing” 4). Nowadays, athletes and teens use steroids to enhance their performances and improve their looks. There were a lot of reports about how the dangers of steroid use affected physical and psychological health among teens, some solutions are testing and educating on steroid use.
Summary Statement: In short we now know the history behind steroids; the different types admissions of
They are abused by both athletes and non-athletes in an attempt to “enhance performance and/or physical appearance” (“NIDA InfoFacts: Steroids (Anabolic-Androgenic)”, 2009). Steroids, typically taken orally or by injection, are used in “cycles” where a user takes steroids for a period of time, then stops for another length of time and then the pattern continues. Steroids are considered very dangerous, fickle substances that have the potential to mess up the user’s bodily functions if care is not taken while on them.
Steroids (anabolic) are a drug that was discovered and made by medical scientists in the last 1930’s to help with medical problems. The drug was made to help with many medical problems such as testosterone, growth, sexual functioning, and other medical problems such as helping people with HIV to help grow musical. It also helps with many other diseases. Like any other drug on the market people learn that the drug can be used for many other ways. Steroids can enhance athlete’s performance as well as bodybuilders and is used in almost every sport out there. The use of steroids has become a widespread problem. Steroid use has caused many help problems with the misuse of the drug and has caused the drug to be illegal for people to use them in
The dream of some become the dream of many, athletes and people in general are looking for ways to achieve their ambitions without caring about the results. Now we often hear the word Steroids mostly in national TV and radio stations in news related to scandals, athletes are using it to enhance and maximize their performance,
Abstract: With the increase of competition has also come the need to become bigger and stronger than the opponent. The use of steroids among athletes has caused the focus of the game to change. No longer does an athlete want to win by doing their best, but they want to become bigger and have an advantage over the opponent. Ultimately, all athletes feel that they need to use performance-enhancing drugs to compete at the same level. Despite all of the warnings and information on performance-enhancing drugs, athletes continue to use them and overlook the potential health risks associated with steroids.
Throughout the history of athletics, humans have pursued new and innovative ways to construct better, faster, stronger athletes. Steroid use is one of the most popular choices among these athletes. Steroids, first created in the 1930s, are synthetic hormones that produce specific physiological effects on one's body (Center for Substance Abuse Research). Although the German scientists who discovered steroids did not intend its use for body building or creating better athletes, steroid use has developed into a controversial subject concerning the health of users and other moral issues. Overall, the use of steroids in athletics is physically and morally wrong because it essentially promotes the deterioration of the health of athletes and
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetic forms of male sex hormones, like testosterone. They speed up the growth and development process of muscles in the body. Steroids were originally developed around the 1930s in order to treat hypogonadism, which is a disease that prevents the male testes to not produce
There are a huge amount of different types of steroids; in-fact, there are many of diferent types found in nature. The ones found in nature are not as effective as the ones that are man made. The anabolic steroids are probably the most common type of steroid used among athletes. Within this classification, again we have a lot of different types of steroids; countless forms, alternate forms and derivatives, and there are so many it can, at times, seem very

So what exactly are steroids? Steroids are a synthetic substance closely related to the male sex hormone, testosterone. They are legally prescribed for some medical conditions such as AIDS, some cancers, and anemia. This is a vital medication for people with these sicknesses that make the body weaker. (Adams)A very common misconception is that steroids give you muscle. They do not. It builds protein faster then normal which allows people to work out more often. Scientifically, the human body has millions of cell receptors that accept the drug an in turn tell the body what action to perform. In particular, when
Overall steroids are illegal, and dangerous, but they are still used by many people. Steroids go straight to the bloodstream, quicker if they are injected. When taken orally they first go through the liver. Basically steroids work like this: "A steroid enters the bloodstream and is carried into the muscle cell by diffusion then it binds to a receptor site. (These are certain areas in a cell that are receptive to free-floating molecules in the blood). The connection formed lets the steroid send a message to the receptor site to have some sort of a metabolic change in the cell. This is primarily increased protein synthesis and nitrogen retention" (Taylor 143-145). This leads to increased size and strength in the muscle cell.
In the past three decades, steroids has been becoming a serious problem more than ever in the athletic field. Steroids are anabolic drug "to build" growth hormones that include the androgens (male sex hormones) principally testosterone and estrogen and progestogens (female sex hormones). Steroids were first developed for medical purposes. They're used in controlling inflammation, strengthening weakened hearts, preventing conception, and alleviating symptoms of arthritis and asthma. Unfortunately research has shown that steroids have been abused in almost every kind of sport. Although steroids contribute to a muscular body, usage should remain illegal because they physically deteriorate and mentally destroy the body.
In today’s society in athletics, muscle mass and strength seem more important than in years past. It is believed that many athletes use anabolic steroids to increase their muscle mass and also their strength. Anabolic steroids are a group of synthetic hormones that promote the storage of proteins and the growth of tissue, sometimes used by athletes to increase muscle size and strength. Before the mid 1970’s the use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) was used mainly by highly trained athletes especially those involved in weight training. Since then other athletes including those involved in recreational sports and non-competitive sports have started using the steroids. Steroids are also being used by many school age children
