The Use of Steroids is Banned in Professional and Organized Sports

Performance enhancing drugs must be made legal in professional sports. Professional athletes would not be given free reign of all the PEDs available in the world, but rather a new set of rules would be issued. The rules would allow athletes to meet or exceed their maximum abilities as humans while making it safer than the modern state. If made legal the potential results of PEDs would be tested and altered appropriately to create the safest, most impactful drugs; however, in the current situation professional athletes buy PEDs from sellers without pharmaceutical or sports medicine credentials. Performance enhancing drugs have the potential to develop super humans, and if made legal in professional sports, it would create the most talented and entertaining sporting events of all time.

In 2013, 12 Major League Baseball players each received fifty game suspensions without pay for using performance enhancing drugs. Big names such as Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez were on this list. Testosterone, an illegal substance, is what is found in the performance enhancing drugs. Testosterone increases male characteristics such as body hair, aggression, deepening of the voice, and of course massive muscle growth (“Steroids” par. 1). Some professional athletes claim to use performance enhancing drugs to recover more quickly from injury; others take them because they have not seen the positive feedback in working out, without the use of the steroids. Performance Enhancing Drugs(PEDs) shouldn’t be used in sports, because of its adverse health consequences. According to an article called Performance-Enhancing Drugs Can Have Severe Long-Term Impact on Health: Expert, in the long term, PEDs can cause impotence, worsening acne, balding and “steroid rage.” This conveys that if athletes use PEDs there will be serious effects and severe consequence to their health. Therefore, the illegal drugs and supplements that the athlete consume are dangerous, damaging and potentially deadly. Athletes use performance enhancing drugs to boost their game. The professionals who use these drugs are ruining the integrity of the game. Many people don’t understand why professional athletes would go to such extreme measures to be better when they have already proven themselves. Athletes are just taking away from their natural ability by using these dangerous drugs. The risk of using performance enhancing drugs is a lot greater than the reward, because an athlete’s reputation could be tarnished and their career ruined. It is time for the government to legalize steroids. Because so many athletes are using, legalizing is the only way to get a level playing field like the sports associations want. Every athlete would have the option legally to use steroids. Morally and physically, each athlete would have that certain choice to make also. Steroids and PED’s are used today in sports to help athletes gain muscle mass and strength. Other athletes use them to boost their athletic performance. Today, about 30 percent of college and professional athletes still use anabolic steroids, 10 to 20 percent of high school athletes use them (Lewis). There are many reasons why steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs shouldn’t be allowed in sports.

From the beginning of history, professional and amateur athletes have tempted to use legal or illegal drugs to enhance their performance (1). Athletes have used pharmacological agents, called Performance-enhancing drugs(PEDs), to enhance performance or to become leaner or more muscular (2). In sports, administration of drugs that are forbidden by international world anti-doping agency (WADA) is referred as doping (3). Anabolic androgenic agents (AASs) are the most popular agents that are abused by the athletes, especially bodybuilding athletes. Besides these agents, other classes of drugs such as stimulants and peptide hormones (growth hormone and insulin) are new PEDs that are abused by a lot of athletes in the different sports (1). Other than these compounds, athletes often use dietary supplements like creatine, protein, and vitamins to enhance strength and increase body mass (4-6).

“Why it’s time to legalize steroids in professional sports” written by Chris Smith of Forbes Magazine argues that to level the playing field of professional sports it would be beneficial to legalize the use of performance enhancing drugs. Mr. Smith’s ideals that professional sports would be a fairer, more entertaining version of itself if performance enhancing drugs were legal, is an incredibly irresponsible and impudent declaration.

Abstract:  With the increase of competition has also come the need to become bigger and stronger than the opponent.  The use of steroids among athletes has caused the focus of the game to change.  No longer does an athlete want to win by doing their best, but they want to become bigger and have an advantage over the opponent.  Ultimately, all athletes feel that they need to use performance-enhancing drugs to compete at the same level. Professional athletes are competitive by nature and will do what it takes to win. Sports have been used as not only entertainment but a way for a person to show off their athletic ability. Due to uncontrollable factors people may find it harder to compete or surpass other’s performance. Even with training people’s bodies respond different to physical stimulation. Professional baseball is an extremely competitive sport with hand-eye coordination and strength being key factors. When the difference between playing in the majors or minors, keeping up with younger players as you age or to be the best players turn to performance enhancing drugs. Performance enhancing drugs come in many different forms but the most common are anabolic steroids, human growth hormone and other agents that mimic anabolic results. These performance enhancing drugs, with addition to hard work do in fact increase strength in the user. These methods of performance enhancement also include many other substances used to gain an edge on the competition. All of these are considered cheating because of the fact a person gains an unfair advantage over other players. The use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs has changed what once was a game played for enjoyment into a drug fueled search for the largest salary.

There is only one way to level the playing field. The only way is to make steroids legal in professional sports. In the article, “Why it’s Time to Legalize Steroids in Professional Sports” by Chris Smith, he says, “Not only would the playing field suddenly be even for all players, it would be at a higher level.” I think that this is exactly true. Legalizing steroids would make the sports more entertaining. Athletes in the sport will be able to play at a higher level. Chris Smith also said, “It also makes sense for professional sports to allow steroids from a business standpoint.” People will pay more money to watch the upper level athletes perform. If steroids were legal it would make drug stores more money because more people would be buying steroids. Not only will the legalization of steroids benefit the sport, it will benefit other businesses as well.

PED’s are supplements such are human growth hormones and steroids that a person,usually an athlete, can take and they will make them perform much better than they really should. PED’s are a major issue in the NFL just this year several players have been suspended for taking these drugs. Two players for the Chicago bears, Alshon Jeffery and Jerrell Freeman, were both suspended in the same week for taking PED’s. Several other players that faced suspension were, Peyton Manning, Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers, and James Harrison.
