Fame and fortune, a family and a stable job, a career that one is passionate about. These are just a few examples of The American Dream that so many people in society strive to attain. Achieving this dream is not easy and comedian Steve Harvey witnessed first-hand just how difficult it is. Harvey had the dream of becoming a comedian who makes people laugh and to be married, that was his American Dream. Today, Harvey has a good marriage, his own talk show, he is a radio personality, and has written multiple books filled with relationship advice but, when his career began he could not land a gig or keep a steady relationship. The separation put a rift between Harvey and his two daughters, Brandi and Karli. Harvey still gave a large portion of his funds to his ex-wife and children leaving him with $50 a week to live off of. On top of Harvey’s low income he was also living in his car or in cheap motels. Every gig that Harvey would land kept falling through he admitted to People that he was ready to give up “‘I sat down and started crying, but a voice said, ‘If you keep going, I’m going to take you places you’ve never been.’ It was like God said, ‘Don’t quit, you’re almost there,’” (PEOPLE, 1) Harvey listened to the voice and did not give up. Soon after this he landed a gig at the Apollo, where rising comedians and artists are showcased. This was Harvey’s big break and the moment that he left the back seat of his truck and entered into the world of television and fame. Yet, Harvey was still miserable and was in a very dark place. A large part of the unhappiness that he went through during this time was because of the relationship he had with his then wife and soon to be ex-wife. “I just wanted to be married. I convinced myself that marriage was supposed to be filled with pain and that you were supposed to endure it,” (PEOPLE, 1) His many failed relationships
