Achieving the American Dream is like fighting over the last TV on Black Friday. The American Dream is very limited. A person has to have a certain background to achieve it. The American Dream is an illusion. America wants one to believe that they have the perfect set of materialistic things to make their life better. The American Dream consist of having money, a nice house, a great looking car, and a family. Not everyone can achieve that though because of the barriers that they have in this country. The American Dream is not achievable by all people because individual’s divergent backgrounds.

Today the “Dream” is more of a struggle for success. For some it’s a fantasy while for others, it is a long term goal. The media defines society today, thus it’s only natural that it defines the American Dream, one which is no longer focused on freedoms or liberty, but rather money and success. The American Dream not only calls for financial success but also emotional success.

The definition of American Dream is that we all have the equal opportunity to achieve success and determination, prosperity through hard work and initiative (“http://www.dictionary.com”). Chris McCandless was a graduate, son of wealthy parents, a consider brother, a top student and athlete but he chose a different American Dream from his family and friends. Chris McCandless did achieve his American dream through hard work, determination and initiative when he finally made it to Alaska. In Alaska he hunted, explored and watched animals in the woods from an old abandoned bus. He enjoys the beauty of Alaska that was so breathtaking to him. He was isolated from his old life, from his family and from his friends, but Chris McCandless enjoys every minute of his American dream until the day he died.

Most believe that the American Dream is the perfect life, with a house and white picket fence. While this type of life may be an attainable plan, human nature causes us to always want more, so even with the “perfect” life, there is still always a goal left to be reached. Many famous celebrities who seem to have anything and everything right at their fingertips often end up committing suicide. proving that on the outside it may seem as though they achieved the American Dream, but there was still something more that they didn’t have. There is a common saying that goes “you only want what you can’t have.” So while people may dream their way into getting things that they desire, the grass remains greener on the other side.

When the phrase “American Dream” is uttered, it is typically associated with having money or striving to have money. The dream of much of the public is to have money and to be able to purchase anything they desire whenever they want. For some, this dream is not about money, but it is about having the opportunity to better his or herself and his or her loved ones. In either case, there are certain circumstances and obstacles that make this dream increasingly difficult to attain. Some would even be willing to argue, the American dream is unattainable. “American Dream” is defined as the concept of every citizen of the United States having an equal opportunity to achieve success and happiness through hard work, sacrifices, and risk-taking (Fontinelle);

He received a full ride to go to college on a football grant at Temple University years after graduating from the navy. He finished his doctorate in instruction at the University of Massachusetts by the around 1973. Meanwhile him being in the navy, he had time to think of having a career in many things he was good at.
