Stress is an ongoing dilemma which occurs in everyone's life. It is a factor that is without a question apart of daily living. Due to the minor problems that occur in people's daily lives, massive amounts of stress can arise. Stress means different things to people and effects people in different ways. Some people think stress is something that happens to them such as an injury or a birthday. And others think that stress is what happens to our mind, body, and behaviors in a response to an event. While stress does involve events and how one responds to them, these are not the critical factors, but our thoughts about the situation in which we are involved are the critical factors. A burnout is an increasingly intense pattern of psychological, physiological, and behavioral responses to a continuous flow of stress or chronic stress. It is commonly found among employees and professionals who have a high degree of personal investment in their work and have high performance expectations. In the initial stages, people often have a variety of physiological and behavioral symptoms and lose interest and confidence in their work. The following physiological symptoms may occur: shortness of breath, loss of appetite, weight, headache, fatigue, and exhaustion. People who experience a burnout may have some of the behavioral symptoms like: lack of interest in fellow employees, risky behavior, and mood swings. In the later stages, people often engage in the following problems such as, abuse of alcohol and other drugs, smoke excessively, drink more caffeinated beverages, and become more rigid in their thinking. They often lose faith in the abilities of co-workers, management, the organization, and themselves. As a result they then become less productive. In fact, many people don't associate these symptoms to stress and this burnout stage. This burnout stage goes behind the subject ego depletion. Ego depletion is when an indivual acts of volition-making choices and decisions, taking responsibility, initiating, or inhibiting behavior, and making plans of action to carrying them out. Stress is described as a psychological and psychological and physical strain or tension generated by physical, emotional, social, economical or occupation circumstances, events, or experience that are difficult to manage or endure (Andrew M. Colman, 2015). Stress can affect all aspects of your life, which include your emotional, behaviours thinking ability, and psychical health (webmd, 2016). More than one in five Australian have reported mental health issue as a source of stress (psychology, 2014).
According to Janeway1, “stress is a physical or psychological stimulus which, when impinging upon an individual , produces strain or disequilibrium”.1 Stress is a biological, physiological and behavioural response to environmental demands. An appropriate amount of stress has protective and adaptive functions however a high amount of stress can cause pathological changes or even death.4 Exposure to stress can lead to painful emotions such as anxiety or depression, as well as physical illness.3 People under an overwhelming amount of stress may experience tachycardia, palpitations and rapid breathing.7
Stress is the process of measuring and responding to a threatening or challenging event. If it lasts a short time it can actually be beneficial and can mobilize the immune system to fight off infections and heal our wounds. Stress has an arousal property that motivates us to solve our problems. Extreme or prolonged stress on the other hand can be very harmful and can lead to chronic disease. Stressors fall into three categories: Catastrophic, significant life changes, and daily hassles. All can be bad for us.
Christina Maslach and Susan Jackson are the most well documented researchers on burnout and the most frequently referenced in the literature. Maslach and Jackson (1981) defined burnout as consisting of three component: overwhelming emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishments. The feeling of being overworked/overextended and drained of physical and emotional resources is at the core of emotional exhaustion. Depersonalization refers to a cynical, negative attitude towards people one is interacting with (coworkers, clients, etc.), and excessive detachment and emotional numbing from the various aspects of the job. Feelings of emotional exhaustion subsequently lead to depersonalization. Depersonalization is a protective state of cynicism that spurs dissonance, either cognitive or emotional, with others as a coping strategy for work demands and exhaustion (Halbesleben & Buckley, 2004). Throughout life, and as we get older, you will start to notice that people develop worries about various things more then they would at a younger age. For example using money for paying monthly bills, car expenses, and buying groceries is a common cataylst for stress for many adults. Sometimes, they don't even notice it, it may only affect them sub-counsiously. Some people may never notice this, and it may never affect them, however, I've never personally met someone who doesn't experience some form of this "stress". I have learned so much about stress process and how it affects health. Stress is how we understand and respond to stressors. I have learned we all appraise our stress and respond to the stressors differently. One important aspect about stress is that it can aid us or hinder us. For example, eustress, which is considered good stress, and distress, is known as bad stress. The process of stress can begin with us experiencing the stressor, then understanding how much control we have over the stressor. This process is explained in detail in the Lazarus model.
