As a high school teacher and coach, this course has helped me become aware of what steps I need to take in our school to help a student that has a potential drug or alcohol problem. I know I need to have a specific plan, if a student approaches me thinking their friend may have a potential problem with drugs or alcohol. I have conferred with our liaison and school nurse in our school. We have steps that are already in place in our school.
If the student is someone that is in my class that is comfortable speaking to me, I will ask them to stay after class. If they have missed a bunch of assignments, I know I need to set expectations with consequences if they do not turn them in. If the student does acknowledge they have a problem, but

Our liaison works with our school nurse, who can follow up with blood pressure checks moreover urine tests if they question their addiction. We also have a substance abuse intervention agreement that is already in place. This agreement states it is in the best interest of their child to be randomly drug tested while being a student at our school. The agreement states that our school feels there has been enough evidence to show that the substance abuse has caused negative changes in behavior, attendance, along with lower grades. This agreement is in effect for all students involved in curricular or co-curricular activities while enrolled at our school. This gives our school permission to drug test at any time during the life of this contract, plus it does not violate a student’s privacy or constitutional rights of that …show more content…
These steroids taken orally or injected, will typically take cycles involving taking multiple doses over a period of time. They think they can stop moreover start at any time. The major side effects can include liver tumors, cancer, jaundice, fluid retention, high blood pressure, increases in LDL consequently decreases in HDL. So by preparing my athletes to be aware of how dangerous prescription drugs can be, I hope to stop them from trying pain relievers and prescription drugs from their friends or even parents medicine cabinet. (Sedler, M, Dr., NIDA InfoFacts:
I believe that these drugs are safe when used in moderation and should be allowed to use by athletes if they choose, as if you allow Safe doping, then it will let the athletes have an advantage in their game plus they have a choice, when used for health purposes it's safe as well as moderately using them for working out and athletics to help recovery time, injury recovery and endurance. Yet these two types of steroids can be very addictive and most steroids prescribed are abused because of the addictive nature of them, when abused or taken over long periods of time, causing many irregularities in the body and diseases that may end up fatal as well as aggressive acts that can lead to crime, like robberies, assaults and damaging property. These acts are usually called “Roid Rage”. (Stacey L. Blachford and Kristine Krapp 2003) Steroids have healthy and unhealthy impacts, Healthy outweighs the unhealthy
Steroid.org noted only two external side affects (balding, changes in skin) and noted only the following 11 internal changes: Psychic, Feminization, Cardiovascular, Gynecomastia, Growth Deficits, Headaches, Kidney problems, Liver problems, Immune system, Impotence, and Stomachaches. Which all may seem bad but are less of a threat to athletes than most prescribed allergy medicines. The article even goes on to admit, the biggest factor leading to negative side affects is misuse. A regulated and informed usage policy would be very beneficial to the game as well as the athletes themselves.
They are abused by both athletes and non-athletes in an attempt to “enhance performance and/or physical appearance” (“NIDA InfoFacts: Steroids (Anabolic-Androgenic)”, 2009). Steroids, typically taken orally or by injection, are used in “cycles” where a user takes steroids for a period of time, then stops for another length of time and then the pattern continues. Steroids are considered very dangerous, fickle substances that have the potential to mess up the user’s bodily functions if care is not taken while on them.
Anabolic steroids are taken by tablet, injection, and also by pads on the skin. Even with the possible benefits that steroids could possibly have there are many many more dangers. Some of these include deep depression, aggression, and bad nervousness. Some physical dangers include high blood pressure, liver disorders, and even going bald. The athlete that makes the poor decision to use steroids, also faces the danger of getting caught and being suspended or even banned from the professional sport of which they
Steroids (anabolic) are a drug that was discovered and made by medical scientists in the last 1930’s to help with medical problems. The drug was made to help with many medical problems such as testosterone, growth, sexual functioning, and other medical problems such as helping people with HIV to help grow musical. It also helps with many other diseases. Like any other drug on the market people learn that the drug can be used for many other ways. Steroids can enhance athlete’s performance as well as bodybuilders and is used in almost every sport out there. The use of steroids has become a widespread problem. Steroid use has caused many help problems with the misuse of the drug and has caused the drug to be illegal for people to use them in
There are many health risk for taking steroids such as increases chances for disease, physical and emotional dangers . Abusing steroids lead to bad cholesterol (livestrong).. Other time it turns into liver disease and can sometimes turn into possible liver cancer (livestrong). Steroids also cause physical dangers. Steroids cause the left heart ventricle it enlarge high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes.steroids contribute the development of CVD which changes how much cholesterol gets to the blood (livestrong). One of the common damages from steroids is tendon ruptures which is some sport cases and cause an end to a career (livestrong). The reason steroids cause the tendon to rupture is because it causes testosterone to rise causing a growth spurt during puberty and adolescence providing the signals to stop growth as well. and adolescence and provide the signals to stop growth as well (livestrong). Causing high sex hormones that can prematurely signal the bone to stop growing causing the tendon to rupture
Residential schools were something I was unaware of up until the past year, and I believe the fallout from them is something that should be taken much more seriously than it is. An inconceivable amount of people have been affected by this schools, with depression, suicidal thoughts and substance abuse haunting them even when they found a safer place. The fact that so few people are aware and concerned about this is disheartening and makes me wonder how much other people care about things that don’t affect them. The ignorance borders on racism, seeing as if a child in regular school in the 1960s came and said that they were sexually abused by a teacher the government would have taken care of it within a second. But, they have had over 50 years
Most athletes do not fully understand the consequences that come with doing these types of drugs to better themselves as athletes. Because they do not fully understand what they are doing to themselves and those around them. Steroids can be very dangerous to ones health epically when they are working themselves very hard at something. Steroids can be very hard on all the different parts of the body, however the one that they are the hardest on is the athletes kidneys. The effects on taking these steroids can be detrimental for years and years to come, because they are so hard on all of the different body functions. The attitudes of any one who decides to take these types of drugs, are changed and most of the time are very bad and may have unforeseen consequences. Stacy Beaty, a renowned orthopedic and sports medicine doctor stated while being interviewed “Athletes do not understand or care to understand what troubles they are setting themselves up for later in life.” Athletes, get very bad attitudes because they think that they are big and strong, and essentially believe they are invincible to the world. When they get this mind set many thing in their lives may begin to go wrong. Some of them will believe that they can lift a thousand pounds, while other think that they can drink and drive. The sad fact about all
Steroids are a type of anabolic that works in the area of muscle cell construction, or may have effects similar to those of testosterone (sex hormone male). Most of the time people who use steroids are athletes looking to increase their muscle mass quickly. The effects of abusive use of anabolic steroids in children and adults are difficult to occur, but can be life-threatening. Basically, all athletes who use steroids in large numbers will suffer adverse effects, such as difficulty in sperm production or menstruation, acne, hair loss and mild psychological disorders. Many of the athletes who believe that steroids do not reach directly through the central nervous system. These athletes claim that the steroid makes them feel more
Overall steroids are illegal, and dangerous, but they are still used by many people. Steroids go straight to the bloodstream, quicker if they are injected. When taken orally they first go through the liver. Basically steroids work like this: "A steroid enters the bloodstream and is carried into the muscle cell by diffusion then it binds to a receptor site. (These are certain areas in a cell that are receptive to free-floating molecules in the blood). The connection formed lets the steroid send a message to the receptor site to have some sort of a metabolic change in the cell. This is primarily increased protein synthesis and nitrogen retention" (Taylor 143-145). This leads to increased size and strength in the muscle cell.
In the past three decades, steroids has been becoming a serious problem more than ever in the athletic field. Steroids are anabolic drug "to build" growth hormones that include the androgens (male sex hormones) principally testosterone and estrogen and progestogens (female sex hormones). Steroids were first developed for medical purposes. They're used in controlling inflammation, strengthening weakened hearts, preventing conception, and alleviating symptoms of arthritis and asthma. Unfortunately research has shown that steroids have been abused in almost every kind of sport. Although steroids contribute to a muscular body, usage should remain illegal because they physically deteriorate and mentally destroy the body.
College students have many challenges including grades, money, and other social activities. An obstacle to the success of students in all of these areas is drug use. Most of college students’ problems streamline from their problems with drugs. Grades steadily start to decrease due to a college student’s neglect towards school and more towards their wanting to party. A student that uses drugs often does not know how to interact with others while sober. Also, they act as if they have an antic disposition while under the influence. Drug use will ultimately have a negative effect on college students including poor grades, lack of social interaction, and addiction problems for the rest of their lives.
I lived in Maryland until I moved in third grade. The school I went to was nothing like Hopkinton so moving here was a very big shock. A lot of the kids that I went to school with were very underprivileged and it had a large population of kids that had parents that may have been in jail or had a substance abuse problem. Many of the kids that I took the bus with didn’t have parents to greet them at the bus. My school was also a title one school. This means that my school was qualified to get funds for these families that were less fortunate. It was also a title one school due to the low test scores. A huge part of why they were such low scores was because of these kids home lives. Because of their home life, these kids would often act out in
Drugs and alcohol is a rather important topic to be discussed among high school students. High school is notorious for being a time of experimentation, along with being a time filled with newfound freedom, and along with that comes difficult decisions sometimes. One thing that you can find almost anywhere in high school is peer pressure. Peer pressure can easily make kids succumb to the hopes and wants of others, this is especially true with drugs and alcohol. If you are with a group of friends, and they are doing something, most of the time kids will follow suit, in hopes to not look scared or weak in front of their friends. Many times in high school you will be confronted by difficult situations, however, these situations can be countered with responsible action, and asking yourself
The first thing that the course has helped to understand in relation to drug and alcohol is the different terms that are used when counseling a person. This is the general terms that are used when counseling a patient. For example, it is not good to use terms like “you are wrong,” “you do not know” or “you are foolish.” The course has helped to learn the new terms that I will be using like, “instead of saying you are wrong,” you can say, “that is another good reason.” Additionally, it has helped us to learn the tone of language that is to be used. When counseling a patient, one should always be calm and always be positive about what the patient is feeling and thinking.
