When you enter university or college, you will no doubt have to write an essay in one or more courses that you will be required to take throughout your academic period; whether it be a research paper, a persuasive essay, or even a compare and contrast essay, Usually, this always involves intensive research or a research process such as choosing a topic and to then collect data and information on your chosen topic. To display this process, using an example of a hypothetical situation where I am to write a paper on the Industrial Revolution, my general research process would proceed accordingly: understanding the assignment and planning, choosing a topic or subtopics of interest, gathering data and information, and lastly, properly citing all …show more content…
In the first stage, I would have already identified that I am to perform research on the history of the Industrial Revolution and its impact on urbanization and urban places, which would then be my main focus. Here, I would be thinking of basic questions like the 5Ws and 1H (who, what, when, where, why and how), such as; “What is the Industrial Revolution”, “When did it occur?”, “What lead to the Industrial Revolution?”, “Who were the people of importance during that time period?” and “How did this impact the people?”. These could be some questions that I could address in the body of my essay or be used as a search term during my research. More organized alternatives suggested on York’s SPARK page that I could use include brainstorming, nutshelling, or PMI (Plus, Minus, Interesting). If I am unfamiliar with the topic, I would usually perform a background search first on Google, using sites such as Wikipedia or the first few sites that show up on the search results page just to get a basic foundation of the topic and determine what search terms I could use for the data and information gathering stage. Another recommended search engine to use would be DuckDuckGo which only gives you search results related to your search …show more content…
In the instructions, the professor would have usually stated which type of reference style to use. If not, then the most common one would be the APA or MLA style and there are a variety of tools available out there to help me properly reference my sources. I usually prefer to manually type in my references but in Microsoft Word itself, there is a function in the references tab to create citations for you. There are also a number of websites that will automatically create any style of reference that you want after inputting the information of your
Here are some example citations and references. In some cases, I have simplified, maybe over simplified some of the rules. I will be happy if you use the basics. You might want to ask your professor if you need to be more of a stickler. Here are citations for a book (Giorgi, 2009), a journal article (J. B. Walther, 1995), a web site (American Psychological Association, 2010), an edited book (Rehorick & Bentz, 2008), a section of a book (Polkinghorne, 1989), and a government document (National Institutes of Health, 2008). Here is what it looks like if
The Industrial Revolution is a technological phenomenon that still continues to this day, in the form of its fourth to fifth wave. Ever since the late 1700s, our society has evolved over nearly two and a half centuries, for better or for worse. However, most of the negatives then have disappeared into obscurity and the positives have only grown more and more. So while some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative consequences for society because of child workers and the poor conditions, it was actually a good thing for society. Industrialization’s positive effects were the availability of goods, the advancements in technology and the new job market.
The Industrial Revolution began in England , spreading to the rest of Western Europe and the United States. The Industrial Revolution started from the early 1700s ,to the late 1800s. Advancements in technology produced the Industrial Revolution while advancements in science and medicine altered the lives of people living in the new Industrial cities .While it may be true that many inventions were created during this time ,it can be argued that the light bulb and dynamite had the greatest impact on society.
The Industrial Revolution took place during the 18th and 19th century. It changed the way our products, including cloth and textiles, were manufactured. It was called a revolution because it was the spark of steam power and factory work, thus ringing in a new era of industrial technology. It greatly affected the way people lived and worked. This revolution helped shaped the modern world we live in today. The Industrial Revolution refers to a change from hand and home production of goods to machine and factory. The Revolution completely transformed America's economy, it made a full switch from an agricultural economy, to an industrial one. The Revolution built new roads, and canal systems making it easier
There were many social forces that were at work that led to the emergence of Sociology in the late 18th and early 19th century. Some of these include: the industrial revolution, the French revolution, the Enlightenment and the Counter-Enlightenment. This essay will discuss: the changes in the conditions of labour during the industrial revolution; the ideological revolution, strengthening of the state, nationalism and revolutionary terror in the French revolution; radical changes to the social system in the Enlightenment era and revolutionary terror in the counter-enlightenment period.
Imagine this, a farmer is trying to make ends meet with the little resources that he has. The farmer only has broad daylight, two hands, tools, and fertile soil. However, even though the farmer has determination to make vast production, time waits for noone. What happens when the sun goes down, when the farmer’s hands begin to blister, maybe the farmer will become dehydrated and will have to stop production? There’s a famous quote that states “time is money,”which before the Industrial Revolution was admittedly true. Merchants could not spare a second because time could not afford to be wasted. Furthermore, during the rise of the Industrial Revolution, which took place during the18th and 19th century, merchants were eleiviated of the burden of meager income, malnutrition, and etc. Which of course sounds great, who wouldn’t want a huge weight to be lifted off their shoulders? However, although author Kevin Shultz in his work HIST3 gives great detail as to how the emersion of the “Wild West” brought along some of our favorite cowboy stories and the increase in production ratings, Shultz fails to acknowledge how the Industrial Revolution negatively affected the Native Americans and the Chinese. Thus, the downside of the Industrial Revolution will be critically analyzed in accordance from Chief Red Cloud’s speech, as well as and *put other author* and their work *put title of work*
When thinking of the industrial revolution, I usually correlate this transitional period to great advancements in machinery, and an increase in jobs. However, after looking past the surface of the industrial revolution, in regards to the promise of great wealth, this promise was not kept, along with other issues. I believe that a “better life” would mean that people would not have to go through the same struggles they once did before the revolution, struggles such as not having a job, money, home, etc. In addition, a better life would have to be permanent for it to truly make a difference. Unfortunately, the industrial revolution did not do as much good as people perceived it to have done. Essentially, a revolution is a changing in social order, and although this did happen, the people effected who were a part of it were given almost the exact opposite of what they expected. This essay will explore the conditions workers endured during the revolution, and discuss whether the revolution gave a better life, or a worse one.
The Romantics notion of sublimity was completely altered by the adverse effects of the Industrial Revolution during the 19th century. Before the worker became strictly engaged to the mechanism that would lead to capitalism, they were once people who hand-crafted their lives from nature from where they lived. Romantics initially yearned to expose the natural feelings and thoughts through various forms of artistic production found out in scenes that showed realism. However, with the Industrial Revolution underway, Romantics turned their view to criticize actively, display the new conditions of the worker, and give a new view of modernity outside of the factory. Romantics once sought wonder (sublimity) through a lens that had shown the uncouth
Think about your life for one second: you communicate with people, travel, make purchases, and utilize those commodities. But have you ever wondered what made those things possible? After all, you go to the store to buy things you need. You drive a car to work and to visit your friends. If you need to talk to someone, you simply pick up your phone or computer. However, none of this would be possible without a means of communication, factories to manufacture the products you need, places to work, and ways to travel and transport goods. And what made these possible? The answer is the Industrial Revolution, which started in Europe around the year 1730. A revolution is a major change or turning point in something. The Industrial Revolution
as the population grew, people started making a lot more houses and forming cities which increased the demand for product Another factor that contributed to the start of the Industrial Revolution was improved methods of transportation. Improved transportation methods allowed industries to transport goods to other parts of the world. Why
The Industrial Revolution which started in 1760 had a major impact in Europe it was a time of drastic change. To this day the Industrial Revolution shows how it has impacted Europe positively. There were many different inventions that were created that have evolved now. Factories and modern buildings were constructed for the homeless and people who moved to Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution changed the social hierarchy for more people, making more money due to laws that forced workers to be paid more which later helped get rid of aristocracy. Industrial Revolution changed the landscape of Europe, and the private lives of families in both the cities and countryside; in which, had also fostered
Having confined to limited natural resources and a restricted environment, any activity somewhere on the earth will have its impacts all around sooner or later. Nature had been established an equilibrium, compensating for negative individual impacts of living kinds, may be presenting the best conditions for all, till the near past. However, human activities, due to their intensity, frequency, influence and as being mostly out of natural processes establishing the equilibrium, have been forcing this equilibrium seriously since the industrial revolution.
To begin with, the Industrial Revolution above all period of history increased the border amongst the wealthy and the underprivileged. As a result of building trust on companies to play a role in income, Capitalism was consequently determinedly renowned as the existing economy that we still customized until this day.
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses,” said Henry Ford. The Industrial Revolution was a stage in the evolution of human society in which a lot of change was effected, not only because of all the new technology being invented, but in the structure of society. As people started to stand up for their rights and rejecting the long-standing institution of wealth determining status, the Old Regime had to adapt. France’s Constitution of 1791 had one law that classified all adult male citizens in “active” and “passive” citizens. Wealth being the deciding factor as to who was allowed to become an active citizen. Two years later, as the revolution forced the government to become more and more egalitarian, another constitution was passed introducing universal manhood suffrage. It was only the beginning (Lindemann, p.23)
My group consisted of Lane Davis, Riley Bowen and Abby Avin. We researched the Industrial Revolution which took place throughout 1760 to 1840. I found the Luddites an interesting topic because I didn’t know that there were a group of people who opposed the Industrial Revolution. I learned from Riley that the Luddites were a group of people who were against machines of mass production. This revolt of people began with english textile workers in Nottingham, England. The Luddites disliked machines of mass production because they created harder work conditions and lower wages. Factory workers were worth less because the machines could do more work than people and therefore were valued more. The machines increased unemployment. The revolts against the Industrial Revolution started with a man named Ned Ludd. Ned Ludd was a man who destroyed two textile machines out of rage. All other attacks were then blamed on Ned Ludd. Factory owners hired protectors for the machinery. The attacks stopped in 1812 because nots Luddites were caught and hanged or put in prison. The modern day connection that stood out to me is what I researched about the uprising of Artificial Intelligence(AI). It surprised me that the Industrial Revolution occurring today is Artificial Intelligence. I never thought it was getting bigger and I hadn’t realized that similar changes in workforce could be made. People could lose their jobs and machines would take their place, like in the Industrial Revolution.
