The death strongly influences the risk, but Wilcox states that “developmental factors, environmental and genetic factors all come together, most likely simultaneously, to increase risk” (Seaman). Fortunately, even though the risks are high, it doesn’t cause every one of these influenced children to commit suicide immediately; however, their
It is important to note that not all children have all of these symptoms. Most children will display different symptoms at different times and in different settings. Although some children may continue to function reasonably well in structured environments, most kids with significant depression will suffer a noticeable change in social activities, loss of interest in school and poor academic performance, or a change in appearance. It is also common that children may also begin using drugs or alcohol, especially if they are over the age of twelve. “Research on suicide overlooks young children” article began its discussion of various type of factors that may influence suicide thoughts in children. On average thirty-three deaths occur per year in the united states, amongst children the ages of five to eleven. While death by suicide is higher in adolescents and more or so less common in children, it still shows suicide is still a problem in young children. Per doctor Susan Mayes, psychiatric disorders increase the risk of suicide in children between the ages six and eighteen. Such include: bulimia, anorexia, ADHD, autism, etc. It is not unheard of for children with depression to have thoughts about suicide or attempted it, but bulimia has shown to have a greater risk for suicide than depression. Doctor Guy Diamond, stated that children and adolescents with suicidal behaviors also are driven by factors such as family discord, bullying, and social failure compared to adults.
“More Americans under age 19 now die each year from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, pneumonia, lung disease, and birth defects combined, said Tom Simon ,” (Partner). Suicide can be caused by many things and affects everyone across the world young and old alike. Domestic Violence can negatively affect the ones involved, but it mostly affects the kids who witness it. Divorce is another factor that affect people, however, some kids carry the blame on themselves and they feel responsible about the divorce which can lead them to depression and ultimately suicide.
Discussing suicide can be a very controversial and thought provoking issue. At first glance, one may just think it’s a very black and white topic, and most would agree that suicide consists of someone voluntarily taking their own life. For most people, they would believe it is wrong, but what about in certain cases where the person that chooses suicide is enduring severe suffering? What is the appropriate view about assisted suicide? Why is teen suicide so prevalent? This book addresses these questions, along with many others. The book “Suicide” gives many different views from many different writers regarding the discussion of suicide in hopes of bringing a new thought and outlook on the topic. (Connors). There are several other discussions in the book, such as suicide bombing, but to focus on a certain aspect of the book I will leave that topic out.

Good afternoon, I’m Jasmyne here to talk about suicide and how big of a problem it is. Suicide is defined as an act of one intentionally killing themselves. Why is suicide such a big problem? Well, suicide takes the lives of nearly 40,000 Americans every year; also it is more likely someone will die from suicide than from homicide. For every two people killed by homicide, three people die of suicide. Children young as 10 years of age have even committed suicide. 1 in 65,000 children ages 10 to 14 die by suicide each year. Children, only 10 years old have taken their own lives. Young children, with decades ahead of them, their whole life ended by hanging or shooting themselves. Along with the deaths of suicide being greater than homicide, there are 2 times as many deaths due to suicide than HIV/AIDS. The death of suicide though, it is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year-olds and 2nd for 24 to 35-year-olds. Why is it that a preventable death is has such a higher rate than an unpreventable one?
